An Android phone’s hotspot can replace a separate internet connection for some households, but it does not guarantee savings—or make mobile data unlimited. The real calculation is the home broadband bill you can cancel minus any added mobile-plan cost, weighed against hotspot data limits, speed, coverage, and reliability. “Hundreds a year” is possible for some readers, but the available evidence does not establish it as typical.

What the Android hotspot trick actually does

A hotspot shares your phone’s cellular connection with other devices, such as a laptop or tablet. It does not create a second internet service: connected devices use the mobile data governed by your phone plan. Android notes that tethering can use substantial data, may be slower than fiber, can drain the phone battery, and may incur carrier charges. Android’s hotspot guidance covers these trade-offs.

So the trick is not a hidden setting that cuts an internet bill automatically. It is using a mobile plan you already pay for instead of paying for a separate broadband connection—if the plan, signal, and household usage make that workable.

How to calculate whether you would save

Compare the broadband charge you would actually stop paying with the extra cost of making your mobile plan suitable for home use. If you would keep broadband for reliability or because the hotspot allowance is too small, its bill is not a saving. Likewise, a mobile-plan upgrade or hotspot add-on reduces the amount saved.

Include in the comparison What to check
Broadband cost removed The monthly charge you can truly cancel, including any required service or equipment charges that end with it.
Mobile-plan increase The added monthly cost, if any, for a plan with usable tethering and enough hotspot data.
Hotspot data The included amount, whether it is high-speed, and what happens when it runs out.
Home performance Signal and usable speed where you would work or stream, plus any congestion-related slowdowns.
Usage and reliability How much data laptops, TVs, and other devices consume, how many connect at once, and whether the phone can stay available for long sessions.

Estimate the monthly difference first: broadband cost removed minus any additional mobile-plan cost. Multiply a positive monthly difference by 12 for a simple annual estimate. This is not a universal savings figure; it depends on your actual bills and whether the replacement service meets your needs.

Why “unlimited data” may not mean unlimited hotspot data

Phone-plan data and tethering allowances can be treated differently. Google Fi’s U.S. support page, for example, lists different hotspot rules across its plans, including a plan with no tethering and plans with stated high-speed hotspot allowances. Plan names and terms can change, so check the current terms for the exact plan you have or are considering: Google Fi’s tethering and hotspot details.

Carriers may also reduce tethering speeds or prioritize it differently. AT&T says that after a plan’s hotspot data is used, hotspot speed slows to a maximum of 128 Kbps unless additional data is purchased; that is an AT&T-specific policy, not a rule for all Android plans. AT&T’s hotspot support page, last updated August 26, 2026, describes its terms. T-Mobile says tethering data may be deprioritized relative to on-device data when network demand competes, which can slow tethering. T-Mobile’s network prioritization policy explains that carrier-specific possibility.

Will a phone hotspot work for your household?

It may fit lighter or occasional use

Web browsing, email, and occasional laptop access can be easier to accommodate than a household that streams video for hours, makes frequent video calls, downloads large games, or connects several devices at once. Actual data use varies by activity and settings; check your phone’s usage records and plan details rather than assuming a fixed allowance will suffice.

Test the signal where you need it

A strong signal in one room does not establish that coverage or speed will be adequate throughout the home. Check the connection in the places where people work or use devices, and consider that network demand can change performance. Mobile tethering is not inherently as fast or consistent as a fixed broadband connection.

Consider battery and phone availability

Keeping a phone’s hotspot on for long sessions can drain its battery and tie up a device you may need for calls or other tasks. Android notes that a mobile router may be a better fit for people who need longer hotspot sessions or want to preserve phone battery; that is a separate option, not a requirement for using the phone’s hotspot.

Turn on an Android hotspot

  1. On a Pixel, open Settings → Network & internet → Hotspot & tethering → Wi-Fi hotspot, then turn on the hotspot. Menu names vary across Android phones and software versions; if those labels are missing, search Settings for “hotspot” or “tethering.”
  2. On the device you want to connect, open its Wi-Fi settings, select your phone’s hotspot name, and enter the hotspot password shown on the phone.
  3. Check your mobile data use and plan terms while connected. Google says Pixel hotspots can share mobile data with up to 10 other devices; that limit is Pixel-specific and should not be assumed for every Android phone. See Google Pixel’s tethering setup instructions.

Android also supports Bluetooth and USB tethering. Its guidance describes Bluetooth as a lower-power option for one device and USB as a direct, reliable connection for one device. USB may also let you charge the phone while tethering, depending on the setup. If you use a cable, confirm that it fits your phone and supports data, not just charging. Android’s overview of hotspot methods outlines these options.

Check your carrier terms before cancelling broadband

Both phone manufacturers and carriers warn that tethering can require an eligible plan or lead to charges. Samsung’s guidance notes that carrier tethering plans or overage charges may apply; consult the terms for your own service rather than relying on a generic Android setting. Samsung’s mobile-hotspot guidance provides device instructions and this carrier caveat.
