Sometimes. The Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025) can be a practical streaming upgrade if your monitor has an HDMI input, supports the content you want to watch, and gives you a way to hear the audio. It is not a guaranteed fit for every aging monitor. Tom’s Guide reported a U.S. sale price of $17.99 on October 6, 2026; that is a dated deal, not a dependable current price.
Can you use a streaming stick with a computer monitor?
Potentially, if the monitor accepts HDMI. Amazon lists one HDMI output for the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, and its setup directions say, “Plug the Fire TV Stick into your TV’s HDMI port.” Amazon’s wording is for TVs, not a blanket compatibility promise for computer monitors. A monitor with HDMI may display the stick’s output, but check the monitor’s model-specific manual before buying.
What to check on an older monitor
- HDMI input: Confirm the monitor has an HDMI input, not only VGA, DVI, or DisplayPort. Also check whether it supports the output resolution you intend to use.
- HDCP: Amazon lists HDCP 1.4, 2.2, and 2.3 support for the stick. Amazon says its 4K playback setup may notify you if HDCP 2.2 is not detected. An older monitor or a connection path that lacks the necessary HDCP support may limit protected video playback, including 4K content.
- Audio: The stick sends audio over HDMI. Check whether your monitor has speakers or an audio output you can use. If not, you will need another compatible audio route; do not assume a particular adapter or speaker will work without checking the monitor and setup.
- Power and space: Review the monitor’s available ports and the stick’s setup requirements, and make sure the HDMI connection is accessible. Amazon’s setup instructions are the place to confirm the device’s current installation steps.
These checks matter more than the monitor’s age alone: the exact inputs, supported resolution, HDCP capability, and audio options vary by model.
Is the Fire TV Stick 4K Select really $18?
Tom’s Guide reported a U.S. sale price of $17.99 for the Fire TV Stick 4K Select in an article dated October 6, 2026. Prices and stock change, so check the live listing in your country before treating that figure as available. Amazon describes the 4K Select as its most affordable 4K streaming stick; that is Amazon’s product positioning, not an independent price or value assessment.

How to decide whether it is worth buying
- Find the monitor’s model number and open its manual or specification page.
- Verify that it has an HDMI input and supports the resolution you want to watch.
- Check HDCP support if you plan to stream protected 4K content; Amazon specifically flags HDCP 2.2 detection in its 4K playback guidance.
- Confirm how you will hear sound, using the monitor’s speakers or a compatible audio path.
- Check the current local price and availability, then weigh them against the cost and effort of any audio equipment or other setup changes you need.
If your monitor passes those checks, the stick may give it a straightforward streaming role without replacing the display. If it lacks HDMI, has no workable audio path, or cannot meet the content’s HDCP requirements, the low reported sale price does not make it a suitable upgrade.
What about a Roku alternative?
Roku lists a Streaming Stick (HD) as a 2025 entry-level HD device. Roku’s support guidance says 4K playback requires a compatible 4K display and HDCP 2.2 conditions; its player connection guidance is framed around TVs with HDMI, not universal monitor compatibility. Compare the devices using current local price, resolution needs, HDMI and HDCP support, audio options, app availability, remote setup, and the services you already use. The available price report for the Fire TV Stick 4K Select does not establish a comparable price for Roku’s device.
