Sometimes. Alexa can answer the wake word with the display off on supported Fire tablets, but the result depends on the exact model and generation, whether Alexa Hands-Free Mode is enabled, and whether the tablet is plugged in. Amazon warns that some tablets may not detect “Alexa” while the screen is off and the tablet is running on battery. Plugging the tablet into power is the most useful first test; support for Alexa hands-free does not guarantee support for Show Mode.
What happens when the screen is off
Fire tablets do not have one universal screen-off Alexa behavior. Amazon describes “always-ready Alexa hands-free” as available on certain tablets when the screen is on and/or the tablet is connected to power, or when the tablet is in Show Mode. That wording is deliberately conditional: a model can support hands-free commands yet fail to hear the wake word in a particular battery-saving state.
With hands-free enabled, the tablet listens locally for the wake word. Amazon says wake-word spotting occurs on the device. After the wake word is recognized, the tablet sends audio to Amazon’s cloud, including a fraction of a second recorded immediately before the wake word. A blue line appears on the display while audio is streaming. You can disable Hands-Free Mode if you do not want the tablet listening for the wake word.

A locked tablet may answer some Alexa requests without being unlocked. Other actions require the device passcode, and Amazon says a passcode can still be required to leave Show Mode. A Trusted Network can reduce some passcode prompts, but it does not remove every security check.

Check whether your Fire tablet supports Alexa hands-free
Identify the exact model and generation before troubleshooting. On a Fire tablet, open Settings, then Device Options (or the device-information area on your software version) and note the product name and generation. Amazon’s hands-free support list includes these generations:
| Tablet family | Generations listed for Alexa Hands-Free |
|---|---|
| Fire HD 10 | 7th, 9th, 11th and 13th generations |
| Fire HD 8 | 8th, 10th and 12th generations |
| Fire HD 8 Plus | 10th and 12th generations |
| Fire 7 | 9th and 12th generations |
| Fire Max 11 | 13th generation |
This is a feature list, not a promise that every listed tablet will wake reliably while unplugged with the display off. Amazon’s support material does not publish a model-by-model guarantee for that exact combination of conditions.
Turn on Alexa and Hands-Free Mode
Both the Alexa service and its hands-free listener must be enabled. Use this sequence:
- Open Settings on the Fire tablet.
- Tap Alexa.
- Turn on Alexa if it is disabled.
- Enable Hands-Free Mode.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Actions, and confirm that the Alexa Hands-Free toggle is on. Amazon identifies this Quick Actions toggle as another way to control the feature.
Speak the wake word at normal volume from the tablet’s microphone side, then wait for the blue-line response before giving the command. If the screen is off, first press the power button once to verify that the tablet itself is awake and responsive; then repeat the voice test without touching the screen.
Why plugging in matters
Amazon specifically cautions that some Fire tablets may not detect the wake word when the display is off and the tablet is not connected to power. Fire OS can reduce background activity on battery, and Amazon does not state that every hands-free-capable generation keeps its microphones ready in that state.
Use a controlled test rather than assuming the feature is missing:
- Enable Alexa Hands-Free Mode.
- Lock the tablet so the display turns off.
- Say “Alexa” while the tablet is unplugged.
- Connect the tablet to a wall charger, allow it to charge for a moment, and repeat the same command with the screen still off.
- Compare the two results. A response only while charging indicates a power-state limitation, not necessarily a defective microphone or unsupported Alexa service.
Amazon’s public documentation does not establish an exhaustive unplugged, screen-off matrix for every generation. Therefore, a failed battery test alone cannot prove that your model never supports screen-off Alexa; repeat the test on power and verify the software and settings first.

Hands-free Alexa versus Show Mode
Show Mode is a separate full-screen Alexa interface. It can display visual answers, cards and controls, and it has its own compatibility list. A tablet may support hands-free wake-word commands without supporting Show Mode.
| Feature | What it does | Compatibility information |
|---|---|---|
| Alexa Hands-Free Mode | Listens for the wake word and accepts voice commands while the tablet is usable, subject to power-state behavior. | Fire HD 10 (7th, 9th, 11th, 13th); Fire HD 8 (8th, 10th, 12th); Fire HD 8 Plus (10th, 12th); Fire 7 (9th, 12th); Fire Max 11 (13th). |
| Show Mode | Provides a full-screen Alexa experience and can wake the display after a voice or motion trigger. | Only the generations and software versions listed below are supported; several newer or different generations are explicitly incompatible. |
Show Mode models and software thresholds
| Family | Supported generations and minimum software |
|---|---|
| Fire HD 8 | 7th generation, software 5.6.1.0 or later; 8th generation, 6.3.0.1 or later; 10th generation, 7.3.1.4 or later. |
| Fire HD 10 | 7th generation, 5.5.0.0 or later; 9th generation, 7.3.1.1 or later; 11th generation, 7.3.1.8 or later. |
Generations Amazon lists as incompatible with Show Mode
- Fire 7: 7th, 9th and 12th generations.
- Fire HD 8: 12th generation.
- Fire Max 11: 13th generation.
- Fire HD 10: 13th generation.
To enter Show Mode, use the Show Mode toggle in Quick Actions or ask Alexa to switch to Show Mode. To leave it, turn the toggle off or ask Alexa to exit. In Show Mode, the display can turn on after the wake word is detected, after motion appears in view of the camera, or when you interact with the screen or physical buttons. None of those behaviors changes the separate question of whether a particular tablet hears the wake word while unplugged and its screen is off.
Troubleshoot a tablet that will not respond with the display off
1. Confirm the model and generation
Marketing names such as “Fire HD 8” cover several generations with different feature support. Use the generation shown in device settings, not only the name printed on the case. Compare it with the hands-free list above.
2. Check both Alexa switches
Open Settings > Alexa and confirm Alexa and Hands-Free Mode are enabled. Then check Quick Actions, because a disabled Quick Actions toggle can override what you expect from the settings page.
3. Test while charging
Repeat the screen-off command with the tablet connected to power. This is the key diagnostic for Amazon’s documented battery-state limitation. If the tablet responds only on the charger, keep it powered for a bedside or kitchen installation, or use the screen-on state when you need hands-free commands away from an outlet.
4. Check the microphone path
Remove a case or cover that may block the microphone openings. Test from several positions and at ordinary speaking volume. Do not infer a software limitation from a single quiet-room or long-distance attempt.
5. Separate wake-word failure from authorization failure
If the tablet wakes and shows the blue line but refuses an action, the problem may be the passcode requirement rather than wake-word detection. Unlock the tablet and repeat the request. Trusted Network settings can reduce some prompts but do not authorize every sensitive function.

6. Treat Show Mode errors separately
If Show Mode is missing, check the dedicated Show Mode compatibility list and minimum software version. A hands-free-capable model can legitimately lack the Show Mode switch, including the Fire Max 11 (13th generation), Fire HD 8 (12th generation), Fire 7 (7th, 9th and 12th generations) and Fire HD 10 (13th generation) listed as incompatible.
7. Update and retest
Install available Fire OS updates, restart the tablet, recheck the two Alexa switches and repeat both the unplugged and plugged-in tests. Compatibility pages and software behavior can change, so use the current generation and software information shown on your device when making a final determination.

Hands-free operation means the microphone listener remains available for wake-word spotting. Amazon says that spotting happens on the tablet rather than sending every nearby conversation to the cloud. Once the wake word is detected, the tablet streams the command to Amazon’s cloud and includes a small amount of audio from just before the wake word. The blue line on the display indicates that streaming is in progress.
If that listening behavior is not appropriate for a room, turn off Hands-Free Mode from Quick Actions or in Settings > Alexa. You can still open Alexa manually when you want to issue a request. Remember that disabling hands-free also removes wake-word operation while the display is off.
Is a charging dock required?
No. Amazon’s Show Mode Charging Dock is an accessory for certain older tablets: the 7th-generation Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10, and the 8th-generation Fire HD 8. When the relevant setting is enabled, the dock charges the tablet and can automatically switch it to Show Mode. The dock is not required for Alexa Hands-Free Mode, and Amazon does not say that it is required for screen-off wake-word detection. A standard compatible charger is sufficient for the plugged-in diagnostic and for keeping a tablet powered.

- You have a listed hands-free generation and it responds while charging: Alexa works with the screen off in that powered setup.
- It responds with the screen on but not off: Hands-Free Mode may be disabled, the battery state may be limiting detection, or the model may not maintain wake-word listening while locked.
- It responds on power but not on battery: Use the charger for dependable screen-off operation; Amazon does not promise unplugged detection for every model.
- Alexa responds but an action asks for a passcode: Unlock the tablet or adjust Trusted Network behavior where appropriate; this is an authorization rule, not evidence that Alexa failed to hear you.
- You want visual Alexa cards and automatic display wake: Verify Show Mode support and its software threshold separately from hands-free support.
The safest conclusion for an individual Fire tablet comes from its exact generation, current software, enabled settings and a two-condition test on battery and on wall power. Amazon confirms conditional support rather than a universal screen-off guarantee.
