Not reliably yet. DNA suspended in air and dust can sometimes be recovered after an intrusion, but current evidence shows a proof of concept rather than a dependable way to identify a burglar. A 2026 study found that recovery changed substantially with temperature, humidity, dust, household background DNA, cleaning, occupancy and the time before sampling.
What airborne eDNA is
Environmental DNA (eDNA) is genetic material left in surroundings rather than collected directly from a person. People continuously shed skin cells, hair, saliva droplets and other biological material. Air movement can carry some of that material through a room, where it may settle into dust or remain suspended in airborne particles.
Forensic investigators already look for DNA on objects that may have been touched. Air and dust sampling extends the search to places where investigators do not know which surfaces an intruder handled. It could therefore complement swabs from doors, windows, drawers and other likely contact points.

What the simulated-burglary study tested
The international team, led by Oslo University Hospital, reported its findings in Forensic Science International: Genetics in the paper “Human airborne eDNA as forensic evidence in simulated residential burglaries” (DOI: 10.1016/j.fsigen.2026.103618).
- 391 samples were collected.
- The work covered 22 households in Oslo and Australia.
- Each event was a controlled 15-minute simulated burglary.
- Researchers sampled airborne material as well as dust and household surfaces.
- The release describes tests at four locations and characterizes the work as a proof of concept.
The design allowed researchers to examine whether an intruder’s environmental DNA could be detected without relying only on a known touched object. It was not a trial of routine police casework and did not establish a single recovery rate that applies to all homes or burglaries.

What the researchers found
Airborne DNA can be detected
Human DNA was detectable in air under the study’s controlled conditions. That establishes that airborne sampling can produce forensic material in at least some residential environments.

The amount and interpretability of recovered DNA varied with air temperature, humidity, dust levels, existing household DNA, occupancy patterns, individual shedding, cleaning and other environmental influences. These variables can change both how much DNA is present and how easily a laboratory can distinguish a recent contributor from background material.

Combined sampling may add context
Airborne, dust and surface eDNA could potentially be considered together. A combined pattern might help investigators assess recent and established occupancy, or decide where further examination is worthwhile. That is an investigative contribution—not proof that a particular airborne profile belongs uniquely to the burglar.
How airborne, dust and surface eDNA differ
| Evidence type | Sampling reach | Need to know touched locations? | Main interpretation challenge | Current status in this study |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airborne eDNA | Can sample material distributed through room air | No; it is intended to extend beyond obvious contact points | Strong sensitivity to airflow, humidity, dust, background DNA and timing; mixtures are possible | Proof of concept; not validated for routine burglary casework |
| Dust eDNA | Targets accumulated material on floors and other dusty surfaces | Less dependent on a specific touch location | May include older occupants, visitors and material moved during cleaning or normal activity | Investigated alongside air and surface samples |
| Surface eDNA | Focused on a selected object or area | Yes, or investigators must make an informed selection | Touch history may be unknown, and DNA can be low-level, mixed or transferred indirectly | Used as part of the broader comparison in the simulated homes |
Why an airborne profile does not automatically identify the burglar
A DNA result answers a narrower question than “who committed the burglary?” A profile may show that a person’s DNA is present, but presence can result from an earlier visit, a resident’s normal shedding, secondary transfer or contamination during collection. In a real investigation, the value of a result depends on the household’s known occupants, the scene history, the collection controls and the likelihood that a detected person was present during the relevant time window.

- Guided Instruction: The included teacher's manual and student study guide copy masters ensure structured learning for every lab session. This forensic science classroom kit includes essential safety data sheets, promoting a safe and informed learning environment
Experienced burglars may also wear gloves or protective clothing. Even without protective equipment, a person may leave little recoverable DNA, and any trace may be degraded or overwhelmed by background material. A negative air sample therefore would not show that no intruder entered.

Routine real-world use has not been established by the released study summaries. The experiments used controlled 15-minute simulations, while actual burglaries differ in duration, movement, ventilation, weather, cleaning, emergency response and the delay before investigators arrive. The researchers specifically call for validation after longer post-event delays and across wider environmental conditions.

Before airborne eDNA could support dependable casework, laboratories and crime-scene teams would need agreed procedures for where and how to sample, contamination controls, analytical thresholds, mixture interpretation and reporting of uncertainty. Without those standards, two teams could collect or interpret similar samples differently.
What could make the method useful
- Unknown contact points: Air sampling could supplement swabs when an intruder’s route through a home is unclear.
- Low-touch events: It may provide another evidence source when gloves or brief contact leave little surface DNA.
- Occupancy reconstruction: Air, dust and surface patterns could help separate established household background from material associated with a more recent presence.
- Prioritizing follow-up: Results might guide targeted searches, but should not replace conventional scene documentation and control samples.
What still needs to be solved
- Standardized collection: Define air volumes, sampler placement, collection duration and handling requirements.
- Contamination control: Account for residents, first responders, investigators, equipment and previous cleaning.
- Environmental validation: Test different temperatures, humidity levels, ventilation patterns, dust loads and room types.
- Time-series testing: Measure how profiles change from minutes to days after an event.
- Interpretation rules: Establish how laboratories report low-level DNA, mixtures, partial profiles and uncertain contributor counts.
- Independent casework studies: Compare the method with established surface and dust procedures in genuine investigations.
Bottom line for burglary investigations
Airborne eDNA is a promising additional sampling route, not a finished burglar-identification tool. The 2026 simulated-burglary study shows that human DNA can be recovered from air, while also demonstrating why results are highly dependent on the household and environment. Until broader validation and standardized procedures are available, an airborne profile should be treated as one potentially useful clue that requires careful contamination assessment and corroboration from other evidence.
