AI platforms show promise in discouraging illegal wildlife purchases, but they are not reliable enough to act as a barrier on their own. A 2026 study found that seven AI platforms generally did better than a standard Google search in responding to test prompts about wildlife trade. It also found that safeguards could be circumvented and that protections varied by animal group. The tests measured chatbot responses—not changes in actual sales or trafficking.
What did the 2026 study test?
In “Assessing safeguards against the illegal wildlife trade on AI platforms,” published online in Conservation Biology on 28 September 2026, David L. Roberts and Jason R. C. Nurse tested seven AI platforms alongside a Google search. Their test set used three prompts covering 20 taxa, and the researchers analyzed responses for legality, conservation status, suggested substitutions, and animal-welfare concerns. The journal article is identified as article e70400.
The study examined what platforms returned under those test conditions. It did not establish whether users subsequently bought animals, whether listings disappeared, or whether trafficking cases declined.
How well did the platforms respond?
Across the tested prompts, the AI platforms performed better overall than standard Google search at preventing potentially illegal wildlife trade. Gemini had the highest overall score, followed closely by DeepSeek, Grok, and ChatGPT. The accessible abstract does not provide numerical scores, so this is a qualitative ranking for this particular test—not a general ranking of how the services perform today.

The study also found that some AI responses supplied information about legality that could inform a would-be buyer. That might help discourage demand, but the study did not test whether the information changed anyone’s behavior.
Can AI platforms be tricked into helping people buy illegal wildlife?
They can be vulnerable. A prompt designed to circumvent safeguards returned links to websites that might trade in illegal wildlife, according to the study abstract. The researchers described the sites as potential trading websites; the finding does not establish that a sale occurred or that each site was verified as illegal.

This is a meaningful limitation for anyone treating a chatbot refusal as proof that a request is safe—or a non-refusal as evidence of a completed transaction. Responses depend on the prompt and the subject, and a guardrail is not enforcement.
Why did responses vary by animal group?
The strongest safeguarding responses in the study concerned slow lorises (Nycticebus spp.), chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), and tigers (Panthera tigris). The weakest were for corals, tarantulas, and orchids. Co-author David Roberts summarized the contrast in a University of Kent news release as stronger safeguards for charismatic animals and weaker ones for less charismatic taxa that remain of equal concern.

The researchers suggested that differences in available online information and wider social and political interests could help explain the pattern. That is a proposed interpretation, not a demonstrated cause. The practical implication is that a platform’s strong response to a familiar high-profile animal should not be assumed to extend to less prominent species.
How does chatbot safety differ from AI listing detection?
A chatbot safeguard acts when someone asks a consumer-facing system for information. Listing moderation and image recognition instead aim to find suspicious products or sellers on online services. They address different points in the trade and are measured in different ways.

| Intervention | What it does | What the reported evidence shows | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chatbot safeguards | Respond to prompts that could facilitate a wildlife purchase. | Roberts and Nurse’s 2026 study compared responses from seven AI platforms and Google across three prompts and 20 taxa. | A prompt test does not show that real-world transactions or trafficking cases fell. Safeguards could be circumvented. |
| Listing moderation and image detection | Identify, block, or remove suspicious listings and sellers on digital platforms. | WWF’s December 2025 account describes company moderation, image recognition, and volunteer reporting, as well as activity figures reported by the Coalition to End Wildlife Trafficking Online. | Blocked listings or suspected sellers are platform-reported actions, not verified counts of trafficking cases prevented. |
| Official seizure reporting | Record seizures involving species covered by CITES, including domestic seizures. | CITES says Parties submit annual illegal-trade reports; its restricted-access Illegal Trade Database contains individual seizure data reported since 2016. | Seizure records are not a complete count of illegal trade or online listings, and database access is limited to verified government representatives and ICCWC partners. |
Separate technical work also illustrates why these uses should not be conflated: a 2025 paper by Barbosa and co-authors used language models to generate labels for training classifiers to identify wildlife-trafficking advertisements. Its reported result—up to 95% F1 score at lower cost than direct language-model labeling—concerns ad classification, not whether consumer chatbots refuse harmful requests. The paper addresses that marketplace-detection task.

WWF’s December 2025 account describes the Coalition to End Wildlife Trafficking Online, launched in 2018 with WWF, TRAFFIC, and IFAW as conservation convenors. At the time of the account, the Coalition had 41 company members across more than 50 digital platforms. WWF reports the following activity; these figures should be read as organizationally reported moderation or model metrics, not as independent estimates of trafficking prevented.

- Coalition company members reported blocking 24.1 million prohibited wildlife listings and suspected illicit sellers since 2018, as of 2024; by the close of 2025, the reported cumulative figure was 63.3 million.
- WWF reported that Baidu and IFAW’s AI Guardian of Endangered Species 2.0 recognized 34 species and had an average identification accuracy of 86% in 2025.
- WWF also reported that the system screened 430,000 suspicious images, identified 40,000 images of targeted wildlife products, and led to 15,000 illegal online postings being removed.
These numbers describe different stages—screening, identification, and reported removal—and are not equivalent to one another or to confirmed cases of trafficking prevented. WWF also describes eBay image-detection models for restricted wildlife products and trained volunteers in the Wildlife Cyber Spotter Program, who report suspicious listings and evasion tactics that can improve detection.
What can readers do about a suspicious listing?
WWF advises reporting suspicious listings directly to the platform or to the Coalition. A listing that looks concerning is not, by itself, proof of a crime; reporting it gives the relevant service or organization information to assess.
Enforcement data provides a separate view. CITES says Parties must submit annual illegal-trade reports that cover seizures involving CITES-listed species, including domestic seizures. The associated database is restricted access, and seizure records inform policy and enforcement rather than measuring every illegal trade transaction or online listing.

AI may support several parts of the response, from refusing harmful consumer requests to screening images and helping classify marketplace advertisements. Each use has a different failure mode: a chatbot guardrail can be bypassed; listings can use coded language or images; species can be harder to recognize; and enforcement teams may lack capacity or expertise.
A June 2026 European Commission report on an April workshop describes EU-funded work on illicit-goods detection, risk assessment, and AI-driven monitoring. It identifies wildlife-specific challenges including difficult detection and identification, fragmented legislation, gaps in expertise and capacity, implementation barriers, and limited awareness or political commitment. The report emphasizes testing, training, harmonization, and public-private partnerships; it is policy and innovation context, not proof that a particular AI system stops trafficking.
