Yes, but only in a bounded sense. AI can make selected parts of a game binary easier to understand, suggest meaningful names and types, explain decompiler output, and rewrite verified fragments into maintainable C++ or C#. It cannot reliably restore the original project, comments, build scripts or exact source in minutes.

A dependable result combines a conventional decompiler such as Ghidra or IDA/Hex-Rays with narrowly scoped AI assistance and human validation against control flow, data layout and runtime behavior. Treat every generated function as a hypothesis until those checks pass.

What “AI decompilation” actually means

A compiled game is not a compressed copy of its source repository. Compilation removes or changes information through optimization, inlining, register allocation, stripped symbols, custom allocators, packing and discarded comments. A decompiler reconstructs a plausible representation from the instructions that remain; it does not retrieve the developer’s original declarations.

Ghidra’s processor specifications translate machine instructions into an intermediate representation called p-code. Its analysis then proposes functions, control-flow structures, symbols and data types. Those names and types are evidence inferred from bytes and references, not proof of what the author called a variable or struct.

What a traditional decompiler gives you

  • Assembly and processor-aware disassembly.
  • Control-flow graphs and reconstructed branches, loops and calls.
  • Pseudocode with inferred variables and types.
  • Cross-references from callers, callees, strings and data.
  • Scripts and annotations that let a researcher improve the analysis.

What AI adds

An LLM can work on a small, grounded context more quickly than a person can read every instruction. Useful requests include explaining one function, proposing a descriptive name based on its callers, inferring a candidate structure from repeated field offsets, grouping related routines, or translating a verified pseudocode fragment into idiomatic C++ or C#.

The useful constraint is locality. Give the model the function address, decompiler output, relevant callers, referenced strings and known platform details. Ask it to mark assumptions and unknowns. Do not allow it to invent offsets, APIs, symbols, file formats or engine behavior that are not present in the evidence.

Can AI decompile a game into clean C++ or C#?

It can produce cleaner, readable code for selected routines, but “clean” does not mean “original” or “behaviorally identical.” A generated function may compile and still differ in edge cases, calling conventions, integer widths, floating-point behavior, object lifetime, exception paths or side effects. Recent evaluations of LLM-based decompilation show that recompilation is not a sufficient fidelity test.

No universal published figure establishes a guaranteed time-to-source result, a game-binary accuracy rate or the percentage of original C++ or C# recovered. The 2024 LLM4Decompile work and subsequent evaluations are evidence that language models can assist binary-to-source translation; they are not a performance promise for every commercial game, compiler, architecture or optimization level.

Native C++ games

For a native executable, the practical output is usually decompiler pseudocode first, followed by manually cleaned C or C++. AI can help turn a verified routine into maintainable code, but engine abstractions, templates, virtual dispatch, allocator behavior and compiler-generated state machines may be only partially recoverable.

Managed C# games

A Mono-based Unity build may include managed assemblies that expose substantially more class and method information than a native executable. Even then, stripping can remove unused classes and methods, and obfuscation or missing symbols can make names and intent incomplete.

Why Unity IL2CPP changes the answer

Unity’s official pipeline states: “The IL2CPP backend converts all managed assemblies into standard C++ code.” Unity then compiles that generated C++ and the IL2CPP runtime with a native platform compiler to create the executable or DLL. The shipped artifact is therefore native code plus whatever metadata and symbols survive the build, not the original C# project.

Unity build What you typically receive What recovery can look like Main limitations
Mono Managed assemblies, often containing metadata and intermediate language Decompile assemblies into C#-like code and inspect metadata Stripping, obfuscation and absent symbols can remove names or members
IL2CPP Native executable or DLL, IL2CPP runtime and any remaining metadata Disassemble and decompile native code; correlate metadata and generated patterns Original C# structure, generics, names and comments are not guaranteed to survive

For an IL2CPP title, asking an AI to “give me the original C#” sets the wrong expectation. A realistic objective is a behaviorally faithful model of a subsystem, with names and types reconstructed from metadata, references and tests.

A grounded AI decompilation workflow

Use this process for a lawfully obtained binary and keep the untouched original available throughout.

  1. Preserve and identify the input. Make a read-only copy, record a cryptographic hash, platform, CPU architecture, game version, file type and compiler clues. Keep notes on whether the build appears to use Mono, IL2CPP, Unreal-style native code or another runtime.
  2. Import into a conventional tool. In Ghidra, use File > Import, select the executable or library, confirm the detected language and compiler, then run Analysis > Auto Analyze. In IDA, load the file with the correct processor and operating-system settings and allow initial analysis to complete. Verify entry points and imported libraries before asking an AI model for interpretation.
  3. Recover available evidence. Examine strings, exports, imports, RTTI, exception data, debug metadata, known type libraries and cross-references where you are permitted to use them. Identify engine and runtime signatures, but label a signature as a clue rather than proof of a complete subsystem.
  4. Choose small, address-grounded tasks. Ask for an explanation of one function, a candidate name tied to its address and callers, or a proposed struct based on repeated field accesses. Include the calling convention, architecture, surrounding pseudocode and uncertainty. Keep a human-reviewed change log of every renamed symbol and type.
  5. Check consistency across functions. A proposed type should agree with every caller, callee and field offset. A name such as UpdateInventory is credible only when strings, branches, writes and callers support that interpretation. Reject suggestions that require unexplained offsets or invented APIs.
  6. Validate at runtime. Use a debugger or instrumentation where lawful, capture inputs and outputs, observe side effects and compare traces on known scenarios. Check control flow, calling conventions, data layout and error paths. Then run regression tests before rewriting a component for a mod, compatibility layer, bug fix, archival study or clean-room reimplementation.

Keep provenance with the rewritten code: source address ranges, binary hash, assumptions, test cases and the date of analysis. This prevents a polished rewrite from being mistaken for recovered original source.

Ghidra versus IDA/Hex-Rays for game binaries

Neither tool turns every executable into source automatically. The practical choice depends on target coverage, analysis quality, scripting needs, budget and the quality of validation you can perform.

Decision axis Ghidra IDA/Hex-Rays
Availability Free framework maintained by the National Security Agency Commercial product with a principal commercial decompiler
Core analysis Disassembly, decompilation, graphs, processor specifications and scripting Commercial loaders, analysis engines and decompiler workflows
Human cleanup Rename symbols, propagate types, inspect references and navigate graphs Comparable goals with a different interface and analysis engine
AI integration Requires an assistant or extension that exposes reviewed context and writes back controlled annotations A 2026 roadmap discusses AI-oriented binary semantic analysis engines; availability and features depend on the product release
Best fit Budget-conscious research, broad experimentation and scripted workflows Teams that need commercial support, specialized loaders or established reverse-engineering workflows
Accuracy guarantee Not stated; output requires validation Not stated; output requires validation

For either tool, architecture support and the specific game format matter more than the brand name. A console image, mobile ARM binary, desktop x86-64 executable and managed assembly expose different evidence. AI cannot compensate for loading a file with the wrong processor, image base or runtime assumptions.

How to tell whether generated code is trustworthy

  • Control flow: Branches, loop exits, fall-through behavior and switch cases should match the decompiler graph.
  • Calling convention: Parameter registers or stack locations, return values and callee-saved registers must agree with every call site.
  • Data layout: Field offsets, alignment, pointer size and array indexing must remain consistent across all observed accesses.
  • Side effects: Writes to globals, reference counts, locks, files, network state and engine objects must not disappear in a cleanup pass.
  • Runtime traces: Instrumented executions should produce matching outputs, state changes and error behavior for known inputs.
  • Regression tests: Exercise normal, boundary and failure cases; a single successful run cannot establish equivalence.

When evidence conflicts, preserve the ambiguity in the annotation instead of forcing a single type or name. A clearly marked unknown is safer than an attractive but unsupported abstraction.

Common failure modes and fixes

The model hallucinates an API or engine class

Require every proposed symbol to be tied to an import, string, cross-reference or documented runtime fact. If no evidence exists, retain a neutral name such as sub_140123456 and record the hypothesis separately.

One function looks perfect but callers break

Re-check the calling convention, structure packing and ownership rules. Decompiled signatures are often wrong until they are reconciled across several callers and callees.

IL2CPP output has meaningless names

Combine native analysis with whatever metadata remains, then infer names from repeated behavior and call graphs. Do not claim to have recovered the original C# identifiers when the build did not retain them.

Generated C++ compiles but behaves differently

Compare traces and side effects, not just compiler success. Pay particular attention to signed overflow, floating-point comparisons, virtual calls, exception handling, thread synchronization and lifetime management.

Analysis is overwhelmed by engine code

Separate third-party libraries and runtime functions from game-specific code using imports, known signatures and call-graph boundaries. Start with the narrow subsystem that answers your actual question.

Is decompiling a game legal?

Legality depends on jurisdiction, how you obtained the program, the purpose of the analysis, contract terms and what you do with the result. It is not automatically lawful merely because a file is on your computer.

In the United States, 17 U.S.C. §1201(f) says that a person who has lawfully obtained the right to use a copy of a computer program may circumvent a technological measure for the statute’s interoperability purpose, subject to statutory conditions. The Copyright Office also explains that §1201 generally prohibits circumvention of access controls for copyrighted works, including video games and software; the Librarian of Congress can create limited temporary exemptions.

Those provisions do not create a blanket license to bypass protection, copy expressive assets, distribute reconstructed code or defeat online safeguards. Unity’s terms prohibit decompiling, disassembling or reverse engineering Unity Offerings except where applicable law permits it. Contract obligations can therefore be narrower than a statutory exception.

  • Confirm that you have lawful access and a legitimate purpose such as interoperability, compatibility, security research or archival analysis.
  • Check the game’s end-user license, platform rules and any non-disclosure or employment agreement.
  • Keep reconstructed code private unless you have the rights to publish or redistribute it.
  • Do not use the workflow to bypass access controls, obtain online advantages or extract protected assets.
  • For cross-border work, obtain advice that covers the relevant countries rather than relying only on U.S. law.

When AI decompilation is worth using

AI is most valuable when a person already has a specific, testable question: identify the serialization routine, understand a crash path, map a file parser, build a compatibility layer or document an old binary. It is less suitable when the goal is to regenerate an entire commercial game project with original names, assets and build settings.

Choose the smallest component that solves the problem, preserve the binary and provenance, and require address-level review plus behavioral tests before treating the rewritten C++ or C# as dependable. That approach captures AI’s speed without confusing readable output with recovered truth.
