Not across the board. Current evidence supports using AI to accelerate selected security tasks—such as summarizing threats and surfacing detection leads—not replacing the conventional controls that protect endpoints, identities, networks, cloud services and data. The published figures are largely vendor-reported workflow or threat-intelligence metrics, not independent proof that AI prevents more breaches or reduces losses than traditional defenses.
What AI cybersecurity tools can improve
AI can help security teams make sense of large volumes of telemetry, find leads for investigation and summarize threats. NIST’s initial preliminary draft of its Cybersecurity Framework Profile for Artificial Intelligence says AI can augment human analysts and support detection, response and recovery. That is a potential role, not a guarantee that a system is mature or suitable for every organization; NIST says organizations need to evaluate capabilities against their needs. Some figures illustrate the promise, but their scope matters:

This is a vendor-reported workflow result, not evidence of a matching improvement in security outcomes or a controlled comparison with conventional defenses. Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2026
- Detection leads: CrowdStrike reports AI-agent-triggered detection leads at 2.5 times the rate of human-triggered leads. A lead is an investigative prompt, not necessarily a confirmed incident, accurate alert or breach prevented. The figure is CrowdStrike’s reported metric, not an independent validation. CrowdStrike 2026 Threat Hunting Report
- Practitioner experience: In a 2026 SANS Institute survey of 536 practitioners and 57 senior security leaders, 63% of practitioners reported significant AI shortcomings in threat detection and response. These are survey responses, not results from controlled tool tests or a population-wide estimate. SANS Institute, AI in Cybersecurity (July 2026)
These measures describe different things: speed, lead generation and practitioner perceptions. None alone establishes accuracy, containment time, reduced losses or overall security effectiveness. Microsoft also reports processing more than 165 trillion security signals daily, but that is its stated telemetry scale—not a measure of an individual AI product’s performance.

Why the “crushing traditional defenses” claim goes too far
The cited material does not provide a neutral, standardized head-to-head benchmark ranking AI security tools against conventional defenses. More leads may help analysts find issues, but it can also mean more items to review. Faster summaries may save time without changing whether an attack succeeds. To judge an outcome, a comparison needs a defined baseline, measurement period, method and result—not just a volume or speed statistic.
AI features also depend on the systems around them: the telemetry they can access, integration quality, identity and access controls, model behavior, and whether people can validate recommendations before consequential actions. Established controls remain the operating foundation. AI may increase analyst capacity or speed up bounded workflows, but it does not make those controls obsolete.
AI is also part of the attack surface
AI adoption creates systems and connections that need protection: models, data, identities, tools and integrations. Microsoft’s 2026 Digital Defense Report treats AI as both an attack enabler and an attack surface, and emphasizes governance, accountability, lifecycle security and resilient architecture. Deploying an AI security assistant therefore adds security and operational work alongside any benefit it provides.

The same report describes a campaign that generated nearly 200,000 AI model requests in two minutes. That is a vendor-described campaign example, not a typical rate. It illustrates why AI services and their usage need monitoring, access controls and incident planning.
Can AI replace traditional cybersecurity?
No. The evidence supports selective augmentation, not universal replacement. AI is most defensible as an aid to defined tasks—such as investigation support or summarization—while people and conventional controls retain responsibility for validating findings, protecting assets and authorizing high-impact actions.

Monitoring AI systems is itself an unsettled area. NIST describes the field as “vast and fragmented” and identifies the lack of trusted guidelines or standards among the challenges. Its March 2026 account of NIST AI 800-4 does not establish a single universal measure of monitoring effectiveness. NIST, Challenges to the Monitoring of Deployed AI Systems (March 9, 2026)

How to evaluate an AI security tool
Assess the tool against your environment and the work you need done. Ask the vendor to show how each result is measured, and validate claims using your own workflows where possible.
Best Value
- Define the task and baseline. Is the tool meant to summarize alerts, identify investigation leads, detect threats or take response actions? Record the current process and the outcome you want to improve.
- Check coverage. Identify which endpoints, identities, cloud services, email systems and AI workloads it can actually see. A result is only as useful as the relevant data available to the system.
- Measure quality, not just speed or volume. Ask how the vendor defines a detection lead, what share of leads analysts confirm, how false positives are handled, and whether the measurement was independent or vendor-reported.
- Review response safeguards. For automated actions, examine human approval, permissions, audit logs, rollback and recovery. Determine which actions the system can take without a person.
- Assess data and operational costs. Establish what data the tool accesses, how it is retained, what integrations and access controls it requires, and the burden of maintaining it.
- Test in your own environment. Compare the same defined task and period against your existing process. Track useful triage time, confirmed findings, false positives and safe containment—not just generated summaries or leads.
NIST’s preliminary AI profile is a draft, and its monitoring report describes an unsettled field. Treat guidance and product claims accordingly: verify that the capabilities, safeguards and measurements meet your organization’s requirements rather than assuming the label “AI-powered” signals effectiveness.
