Yes—many desktop motherboards can use an add-in Wi-Fi card, provided there is a compatible, available connection. A PCIe adapter is the usual add-on route; an M.2 wireless module works only if the board has the right Key E socket and supports that module’s interface. Check both manuals before buying: a module can fit physically and still be electrically incompatible.

Which connection does your motherboard need?

Start with the exact motherboard and adapter or module model numbers. The board manual identifies its available slots and sockets; the wireless product documentation specifies its required connection, protocol, antenna setup, and any extra wiring.

PCIe add-in card

A PCIe Wi-Fi card installs in a compatible PCIe slot. Slot size and physical clearance both matter. For example, ASUS identifies its PCE-AX58BT and PCE-AC58BT as PCIe x1 products and directs users to the motherboard manual to find a suitable slot. Do not assume a particular slot will work without checking the card and board documentation. ASUS PCIe Wi-Fi adapter installation guide and ASUS PCE-AC58BT specifications.

M.2 wireless module

An M.2 wireless module is not interchangeable with an M.2 SSD. Intel’s desktop Wi-Fi kit requires an M.2 Key E 2230 socket; Intel says it cannot be installed in Key M or Key B sockets. A board’s M.2 SSD socket should not be treated as a Wi-Fi socket unless its manual explicitly supports the module. Intel desktop Wi-Fi kit installation requirements.

Keying alone does not settle compatibility. Intel notes that CNVi companion RF modules can physically fit a standard M.2 Key E socket but function only in systems designed for CNVi. Confirm that the motherboard supports the specific module protocol, not just the socket shape. Intel CNVi compatibility guidance.

How to check compatibility before buying

  1. Find the board model. Use its manual to identify available PCIe slots or a dedicated M.2 Key E wireless socket.
  2. Match the adapter interface. For PCIe, verify the card supports an available slot and fits the case. For M.2, verify Key E 2230 and the board’s support for the module’s protocol.
  3. Check the included hardware. Confirm the card or kit has the needed antennas, antenna base, and any bracket required by your case. If replacing an antenna, verify its connector: Intel documents a micro-coax connector on its M.2 wireless adapters, but connector compatibility is not universal. Intel wireless adapter antenna information.
  4. Check Bluetooth wiring and drivers. Some PCIe adapters need a cable from the card to a motherboard F_USB header for Bluetooth, in addition to the PCIe connection. Confirm this requirement for the exact model, and make sure the vendor provides the appropriate drivers.

What installation involves

  1. Shut down the computer, unplug it from power, and follow the card manufacturer’s safety and installation instructions.
  2. For a PCIe adapter, install it in a compatible slot, secure it to the case, and connect the antenna base or antennas as directed.
  3. If the adapter requires an internal USB connection for Bluetooth, connect its cable to the specified motherboard F_USB header.
  4. Install the vendor’s driver, then check that Wi-Fi—and Bluetooth, if needed—is detected and working.

Exact steps vary by product. ASUS’s guide documents a PCIe installation and calls out the USB-header connection for Bluetooth on particular models; follow the instructions for the card you have. ASUS PCIe Wi-Fi adapter installation guide.
