Yes. After Ventoy is installed, the drive’s large first partition works as a normal storage volume: you can copy personal files and folders there alongside bootable ISO images. Ventoy searches that partition, including its subdirectories, for ISOs when the computer starts.
The small EFI partition in Ventoy’s default layout is different. It contains Ventoy’s boot files and should be left alone. Put documents, installers and ISO images on the large first partition, where they share the available capacity.
How Ventoy divides the USB drive
Ventoy normally creates two partitions. The first and largest partition is the data volume. It is the place for ISO files and ordinary storage, such as documents, drivers, portable applications, photographs or backups. The second is a small FAT EFI partition containing Ventoy’s boot files. Ventoy’s disk-layout documentation advises against modifying that small partition.

This arrangement applies to Ventoy’s default MBR and GPT layouts. The partition table type determines how the disk is booted on compatible systems, but the practical storage rule is the same: use the large first partition for everything you want to carry, and preserve the small EFI partition for Ventoy.

What kinds of files can share the partition?
The first partition is an ordinary filesystem volume rather than an ISO-only container. ISO images and non-ISO data therefore consume the same pool of free space. A folder containing PDFs, firmware packages and a few ISO files is valid, as is a root directory containing several ISO files beside regular folders.
Ventoy’s official FAQ says ISO files may be placed anywhere on the first partition. You do not have to put every image in the root directory or create a special folder. You can arrange images by operating system, customer, project or purpose, provided you remember that Ventoy searches the directory tree.
The available capacity is shared. If a 64 GB drive has personal files using 20 GB, only the remaining space is available for ISO images and additional files. The usable amount will be lower than the number printed on the package because the filesystem and Ventoy’s partitions occupy some space. Plan the collection before copying large images so that a nearly full drive does not fail during a transfer.

When you boot from the drive, Ventoy recursively searches directories and subdirectories on the first partition for ISO files. This lets you keep a structured library instead of a flat list. For example, you might use /Linux, /Windows-installers and /Recovery, with each directory containing the images relevant to it.

Recursive discovery also means an ISO hidden inside a general-purpose archive folder can appear in the boot menu unexpectedly. If a directory contains ISO files that should remain stored but should not be offered as boot choices, create a file named .ventoyignore in that directory. Ventoy skips that directory and all of its subdirectories when searching for ISO files.
Using .ventoyignore safely
- On the large first partition, open the folder whose ISO files should be excluded.
- Create an empty file named exactly
.ventoyignore, including the leading dot and no additional extension. - Leave the ISO files in place. Ventoy will skip that folder and its descendants during its search.
- If you later want those images in the boot menu, remove the
.ventoyignorefile or move the images to a directory that is not excluded.
The rule applies to the entire directory tree below the file, so place it at the level that matches what you want excluded. Putting it in the root of the data partition would suppress discovery everywhere below that point, which is usually not what you want.
Putting files on an already-installed Ventoy drive
Once installation is complete, use the large partition like removable storage. The following process avoids the common mistake of copying data to the small boot partition.
- Connect the USB drive and wait for the operating system to mount its large data volume.
- Open that volume in the file manager. Confirm that it has the larger capacity and is the partition intended for ISO storage.
- Create folders for your own material and for ISO collections if that helps you navigate the drive.
- Copy ordinary files and ISO images into those folders. Do not alter the small EFI partition that contains Ventoy’s boot files.
- Eject the drive normally after transfers finish. On the next boot, Ventoy will scan the data partition and list discovered ISO images.
There is no requirement to place personal files in a dedicated “non-boot” area. The only functional distinction is whether a directory is searched for ISO files. Use .ventoyignore when you need storage without boot-menu entries.

Choosing a filesystem for the large partition
Ventoy’s documented default for the main partition is exFAT. Its documentation also lists FAT32, NTFS, UDF, XFS and ext2/3/4 as alternatives. The right choice depends on the computers that must read the drive and the files you intend to carry; there is no universally best format.

If you reformat the large partition, Ventoy’s FAQ says the cluster size must be at least 2048. The documentation does not make one format appropriate for every reader, so check the operating systems, firmware and other devices that will access the USB before changing it.
Installation and reformatting: the data-loss warning
Being able to store files after installation does not mean Ventoy installation preserves files that are already on the disk. Ventoy’s FAQ warns that installing Ventoy on a USB drive or local disk deletes all data on the selected disk. Treat installation as a destructive operation.
Before installing Ventoy
- Copy every existing file from the target USB to another storage location.
- Check the installer’s selected disk carefully; a wrong selection can erase a different removable drive or local disk.
- Disconnect or identify other removable drives if that makes the target easier to distinguish.
- Proceed only after you have verified the backup and accepted that the target will be wiped.
After installation, restore your files to the large first partition. If you later reformat that partition to change filesystems, back it up again first: reformatting removes the files stored on that partition even though it does not change the basic rule that the main partition is the storage area.

Planning a mixed ISO and file library
Organize by purpose
A predictable folder structure makes a shared drive easier to use. For example, /ISOs/Operating-systems, /ISOs/Recovery, /Drivers and /Documents keep boot images and personal data visually separate without requiring separate partitions.
Keep boot menus manageable
Because Ventoy scans recursively, every ISO below a searched directory can be offered at boot. Move obsolete images out of the scanned tree or add .ventoyignore to a directory that is archival only. This lets you retain an ISO for reference without presenting it as a boot choice.
Reserve capacity deliberately
Estimate the size of your ISO collection and the ordinary files you expect to add during field work. Leave working space for updates and temporary copies rather than filling the partition completely. Capacity is not divided into a fixed “ISO quota” and “file quota”; every byte comes from the same free-space pool.

Troubleshooting common problems
The computer shows no ISO in Ventoy’s menu
- Verify that the image is on the large first partition, not the small EFI partition.
- Check that it has an ISO filename and is located in a directory not covered by
.ventoyignore. - Confirm that the copy completed and that the partition still has free space.
- Remember that Ventoy searches the directory tree, so moving an image into an excluded folder can remove it from the menu.
Windows cannot open the storage volume
Check the filesystem used for the large partition. Ventoy specifically warns that XFS and ext2/3/4 make the USB unavailable on Windows. If Windows access is a requirement, back up the contents and choose a filesystem that the target Windows computers can mount, then restore the files.

There is not enough room for another image
Delete or move unneeded personal files and old ISOs after making sure they are backed up. Since all content shares the first partition, removing either type of file releases space for the other. Do not delete files from the EFI partition to reclaim capacity; that partition is for Ventoy’s boot files.
The drive was reformatted and Ventoy no longer behaves as expected
Reformatting can remove the files on the main partition and may alter the arrangement Ventoy expects. Restore data only after confirming the partition layout and filesystem. If Ventoy itself was removed or the disk was repartitioned, reinstall it on the correct target, remembering that installation erases the selected disk.
Bottom line for a dual-purpose Ventoy USB
Use the large first partition as a combined file cabinet and ISO library. Ventoy will discover ISO files wherever they are nested unless a .ventoyignore file excludes that directory tree. Preserve the small EFI partition, choose a filesystem based on the computers that must read the drive, and make a complete backup before installing or reformatting.
