A titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalyst helped researchers remove a bronze-colored oxide coating from a stainless-steel sample in a laboratory demonstration. They applied an ink containing TiO2, glycerol, and a binder, exposed it to ultraviolet light, then rinsed it away with water. The result is promising research—not proof that the method removes every kind of rust or corrosion, or that it is a product ready for home or industrial use.
What did the researchers demonstrate?
Andrew Mills and David Hazafy at Queen’s University Belfast were preparing TiO2 photocatalyst films on stainless steel for a water-splitting photo-diode project when they noticed that the steel’s tarnish diminished. They then investigated whether light-activated TiO2 could help clean oxide from metal surfaces.
In the reported demonstration, the target was a bronze-colored oxide layer on stainless steel. After ultraviolet irradiation, the researchers washed away the ink with water, revealing the treated area. The report does not establish that the approach works on all corrosion, rust, metals, or surface conditions. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s 2011 account describes the demonstration.

How does the photocatalyst work?
When ultraviolet light activates TiO2, it produces energetic electrons and positively charged holes. These can recombine, or participate in reactions at the material’s surface. In the reported approach, an electron donor such as glycerol or ethanol consumes holes, leaving electrons available to react with metal oxides.

- Easy, no-rinse application: Wipe in the direction of the metal grain, then buff with the included stainless steel cleaner cloth for a streak-free shine.
The ink described in the report contained TiO2 powder, glycerol, and hydroxyethyl cellulose as a binder. It was applied to the metal, irradiated, and rinsed away. The account does not specify a wavelength, exposure time, lamp model, or a consumer-ready recipe, so its ingredients should not be treated as instructions for a do-it-yourself metal treatment.
Why use an ink instead of a gel film?
The earlier gel-film arrangement needed an oxygen-free environment: oxygen in the air competed with metal oxides for the electrons produced by illuminated TiO2. The researchers developed an ink that dried into a higher-surface-area film, which the RSC account presents as a practical improvement. That change does not by itself show that the process can be used reliably in ordinary industrial conditions.

How does it compare with conventional oxide removal?
The 2011 report contrasts the experimental method with then-current use of strong acids and chelating agents to remove oxides. The approaches differ in how they act and what the demonstration establishes:
Recommended Free Tools
| Approach | What the account says | What was demonstrated |
|---|---|---|
| TiO2 photocatalyst ink | Requires ultraviolet exposure; the ink is rinsed away with water. A prior gel-film setup required oxygen-free conditions, while the ink was developed as a higher-surface-area alternative. | Removal of a bronze-colored oxide coating from a stainless-steel sample. |
| Strong acids and chelating agents | Identified in the report as methods then used to remove oxides. | The account does not provide a side-by-side performance comparison. |
This is not evidence that photocatalyst ink is a direct replacement for current corrosion-control or cleaning products. The account does not report comparative measurements, broad testing across corrosion types, or industrial adoption.

Does this mean the method is commercially available?
No commercial availability or established industrial use is documented in the account. It mentions potential relevance to stainless-steel pipework, including in the nuclear industry, but that is a possible application rather than evidence of deployment. A laboratory UV-A lamp is a general example of equipment used to provide ultraviolet illumination; the report does not specify a wavelength, lamp model, or complete operating setup.
The RSC account appeared in 2011 and identifies the underlying paper as Andrew Mills and David Hazafy, “UV-activated photocatalyst films and inks for cleaning tarnished metals,” Chemical Communications, 2012, 48, 525–527, DOI 10.1039/C1CC15774D. The RSC account also repeats a historical claim that stainless-steel corrosion in UK industry cost around 4% of gross national product each year; that figure is attributed to the 2011 account, not a current estimate.
