A sweat-sensing wearable could help workers track fluid loss during hot work, but the 2025 device described in published research is a research platform—not a confirmed consumer smartwatch available to buy. It measures sweat and other signs of physical strain, then uses vibration alerts to prompt the wearer. A separate 2026 farmworker pilot tested commercially available devices in the field, but it did not test that experimental platform or show that any wearable prevents heat illness.

Can a smartwatch tell when workers need water?

Not reliably in the broad, medical sense implied by that question. The 2025 research device estimates sweat loss and sweat sodium, while also measuring signals such as skin temperature and movement. Those measurements can provide useful context about exertion and fluid loss, but the paper does not establish that the device diagnoses dehydration, determines an individual worker’s water needs, or prevents heat illness.

It is also important to distinguish the research wearable from an ordinary smartwatch. In a 2026 farmworker pilot, a Garmin Vivoactive supplied smartwatch-derived physiological and activity data; it did not directly measure sweat or hydration. The study tested that watch alongside separate devices for hydration and core temperature.

How does the sweat-sensing watch work?

The 2025 paper describes an electrochemical and biophysical wearable built around a microfluidic channel. Electrodes embedded in the channel analyze sweat that enters it. Other sensors collect skin temperature and temperature-difference or thermal-flux information, and an accelerometer records movement.

What it measures

  • Whole-body sweat loss and sweating rate
  • Sweat sodium concentration and estimated sodium loss
  • Skin temperature and thermal-flux-related signals
  • Movement or activity, captured with an accelerometer

These are measurements and estimates from the research system; they should not be read as a clinical diagnosis or as a direct measurement of a worker’s hydration status.

How the alerts and data pathway work

The paper describes haptic feedback intended to cue the wearer at sweat-loss thresholds. Its design vibrated after each 500 mL of sweat loss and continuously at a study-defined threshold of 2% of body weight. Those are device-design settings reported by the researchers, not universal personal hydration rules.

Data is stored onboard and transmitted by Bluetooth to a smartphone and cloud portal, according to the paper. That combination could give a wearer an immediate cue while also making measurements available for later review. The published work reports bench testing and on-body demonstrations during physically demanding activities, including activity while wearing protective equipment. It does not establish commercial availability or show that the system reduces heat illness.

What did the 2026 farmworker field study find?

A 2026 pilot study by an East Carolina University research team involved 30 farmworkers in eastern North Carolina during one July work shift. Participants wore three distinct systems. The study is relevant because it examined device use in an occupational field setting, but its scope—30 workers and one shift—does not establish performance across other workplaces, seasons, or populations.

Device used in the pilot Role in the study Reported data retrieval
CALERA Core-temperature monitoring 100% in this study
Garmin Vivoactive Smartwatch-derived physiological and activity data 97% in this study
Nix Hydration Biosensor Hydration monitoring 80% in this study

The percentages describe data retrieval in this particular pilot, not measurement accuracy, clinical validation, or a general reliability rating for the products. The study authors aligned physiological and environmental data at one-minute intervals and evaluated prediction of a modified Physiological Strain Index. The exact Garmin Vivoactive generation is not identified in the study.

What the findings do—and do not—mean for employers

The two studies answer different questions. The 2025 paper demonstrates a research platform that combines sweat sensing with other body and activity signals. The 2026 pilot shows that separate commercial devices were used during a real farm work shift, with differing amounts of data retrieved. The field pilot did not test the 2025 research wearable, and neither source demonstrates that a wearable alone keeps workers safe or prevents heat illness.

For an employer considering wearable monitoring, the practical questions are what the device actually measures, how it delivers feedback to workers, whether it can collect usable data during the relevant job, and what action follows an alert. A hydration sensor, a core-temperature sensor, and a smartwatch measuring physiology or activity are not interchangeable. Data collection also has limited value if workers lack accessible water, recovery breaks, shade, or a clear response plan.

What should workers and employers do about heat risk now?

Wearables are best treated as a possible aid within a broader heat-safety program, not a replacement for basic controls. OSHA advises employers to provide accessible, sufficient cool drinking water and encourage workers to drink regularly rather than waiting until they are thirsty. For work lasting two hours or more, OSHA says employers should provide access to additional electrolyte-containing fluids. OSHA also recommends increasing break length and frequency as heat stress rises and providing a cool location for recovery. See OSHA’s Water. Rest. Shade. guidance.

As OSHA puts it: “Workers should be encouraged to drink water frequently while working in the heat not just if they are thirsty.” A wearable alert can support awareness, but it cannot provide water, create a shaded recovery area, or decide whether a worker needs urgent medical help.

Recognize an emergency

Confusion, fainting, and seizures can be signs of heat stroke. Do not wait for a wearable alert or rely on a device reading when someone has serious symptoms. Call 911 and follow OSHA’s emergency guidance, including cooling the person while waiting for help: OSHA heat illness first aid.
