Yes. Many smart plugs let you schedule an outlet to turn on or off at selected times, often on specific days of the week. You usually set this up in the plug maker’s app; the available triggers and what happens when Wi-Fi is unavailable depend on the model.
What a smart-plug schedule can do
A schedule runs an on or off action at a time you choose. Depending on the plug and its app, you may be able to set different actions for different days or use a sunrise or sunset trigger. For example, a schedule could turn on a lamp at a chosen evening time and turn it off later. The exact controls vary by product: TP-Link lists schedules and countdown timers for its Tapo P105, while Feit Electric documents schedules and timers for its Indoor Smart Wi-Fi Wall Plug.
A schedule is not the same as a countdown timer
A recurring schedule is for an action at set times and days. A countdown timer is for an action after a duration—for instance, switching the outlet off after a set period. Apps may offer both, but they are separate controls, and their behavior can differ by model. Emporia, for example, documents both scheduled actions and a Timer Mode with a separate app requirement.

- Open the smart-plug manufacturer’s app and select the plug.
- Open its Schedule, Timer, or Automation control.
- Choose the days and times for the action.
- Select whether the plug should turn on or off, then save the schedule.
Some apps also offer sunrise or sunset as a trigger. Alexa Routines can automate experiences based on time of day and other triggers, but scheduling a plug does not inherently require a voice assistant; some manufacturers provide schedules directly in their own apps. Check the instructions for your specific plug and app.
Will a schedule work if Wi-Fi goes out?
There is no universal answer. Offline behavior depends on where a product stores and runs its schedule. Emporia says schedules are stored on its plug and continue during a temporary Wi-Fi outage. Its documentation distinguishes that from Timer Mode, which requires the app to remain running. Do not assume another plug behaves the same way; check its manufacturer’s documentation for what happens during a Wi-Fi or internet interruption.

Check the appliance and electrical limits before scheduling
A smart plug controls power to an outlet; it does not guarantee that the connected appliance will resume operating as you intend. TP-Link notes that most TVs enter standby after power is cut and restored, so a TV may still need to be turned on manually. Check the appliance’s behavior before relying on a schedule.

- Match the load to the plug rating. Check the connected device’s electrical requirements against the plug’s rated limits. TP-Link says the combined current draw and wattage of multiple connected devices must stay within those limits.
- Do not use a plug for hazardous or critical equipment. Amazon’s safety documentation says its Smart Plug is not intended for medical or life-support equipment and warns against use where inaccurate timing, accidental switching, or unsupervised operation could be dangerous. It specifically cautions against equipment such as stoves or heaters.
- Follow the exact manual’s connection guidance. Amazon says to plug its Smart Plug directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip, and not to exceed its rating. TP-Link also advises against connecting a power strip or extension cord to its smart plugs. These are manufacturer-specific instructions; follow the manual for your model.
- Confirm the environment and fit. Check whether the plug is rated for indoor or outdoor use and whether its size blocks a neighboring outlet. Ratings and dimensions vary by model.
What to compare when choosing a scheduled plug
Check the exact regional version rather than relying on a model name alone. Manufacturer documentation illustrates why: TP-Link’s Australian Kasa KP105 page specifies schedule and timer controls, ecosystem compatibility, and a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi requirement for remote control, while Feit lists 120 V, indoor use, app schedules and timers, and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for its indoor plug.
