Yes, in principle—but a Raspberry Pi 5 is not a proven plug-and-play choice for uninterrupted 24/7 streaming. It uses software video encoders, so the workload depends on whether your file can be sent without re-encoding or must be decoded and encoded again. YouTube’s ingestion requirements give you practical settings to test, but neither YouTube nor Raspberry Pi certifies a nonstop prerecorded stream on this board. Also, YouTube may not capture a stream that runs longer than 12 hours, so continuous broadcasting is not the same as getting one complete replay.
What the Pi 5 can—and cannot—be assumed to do
Raspberry Pi documentation states that “Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders.” Its discussion of a low-latency camera workflow says the setup can reach 1080p30, while noting trade-offs such as greater latency than older hardware encoders, slightly worse coding efficiency, and a potentially reduced maximum frame rate. That is useful context, not a sustained-performance guarantee for every prerecorded file, filter, or 24/7 workload.
A prerecorded video still needs software to feed it continuously into a live encoder pipeline. If the file already has compatible video and audio and your chosen workflow can pass the encoded streams through, avoiding video re-encoding may reduce processor load. That is a conditional technical possibility, not a guaranteed shortcut: codec, container, audio format, overlays, scaling, and filters all affect the actual pipeline. Test the complete setup you plan to run.

The available official setup guidance does not provide a tested Raspberry Pi 5 procedure for looping a prerecorded file indefinitely. Treat the Pi approach as a configuration project, not a validated appliance.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings as test targets
YouTube accepts RTMP or RTMPS ingestion. Its current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video at up to 60 fps; for RTMP/RTMPS, audio can be AAC or MP3. YouTube recommends constant-bitrate encoding and RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its general targets are ingestion recommendations, not proof that a Pi 5 can sustain every resolution and frame rate in software.
| H.264 stream format | YouTube minimum video bitrate | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Leave upload capacity above your chosen stream bitrate rather than treating the target as your entire internet connection’s capacity. If your priority is a lower Pi workload, begin with a resolution and frame rate that are acceptable for your channel, then check the real stream in YouTube Live Control Room.

YouTube transcodes the ingested stream into viewer formats. A successful encoder connection therefore does not by itself establish that the outgoing feed, audio, or viewer playback is healthy; monitor YouTube’s stream-health reporting during tests.
Set up and test a local Pi workflow
- Choose the exact media and pipeline first. Check the source file’s video codec, resolution, frame rate, audio codec, and container. Decide whether the software can pass through the encoded video or whether it needs to re-encode, resize, add an overlay, or convert audio. Each additional operation can change the processor load.
- Choose a conservative YouTube target. Use YouTube’s published bitrate, frame-rate, keyframe, and audio guidance as a ceiling and configuration reference—not as a Pi performance promise. If the quality trade-off is acceptable, start at a lower resolution or frame rate than your intended final setting.
- Get the ingest details in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or open the live stream, obtain the stream URL and stream key, and enter them in the encoder software you have selected. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start the feed and check the live preview. Confirm that YouTube receives video and audio, that the stream-health indicator is acceptable, and that the picture and sound behave as intended. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio before going live.
- Run a representative endurance test. Test the exact file, resolution, audio, encoder settings, power supply, storage, cooling, and network you expect to use. Watch for overheating, dropped frames, storage exhaustion, process exits, and connection interruptions. A brief successful preview does not establish reliable 24/7 operation.
- Plan recovery and local recording. Decide how you will restart the encoder after a process or power failure and how you will notice a lost connection. If you need a complete copy of the content, keep a local recording as a separate archive rather than relying on YouTube’s replay of a very long live session.
The official guidance establishes YouTube’s ingest requirements and describes Pi 5 camera encoding; it does not establish a single tested FFmpeg command or other file-loop procedure for every operating system and media combination. Verify your encoder’s syntax and behavior for your chosen system instead of copying an untested command into a 24/7 setup.

Why “live nonstop” does not guarantee a complete YouTube archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Long-running DVR rewind may also be limited. A feed can therefore continue broadcasting while its replay is incomplete or unavailable. If a full archive matters, record locally and plan separate stream sessions around YouTube’s archive boundary where practical.
Rights and monetization still apply to prerecorded video
You are responsible for having the rights needed to broadcast the video, music, and any other included material. Prerecording does not remove copyright or YouTube Community Guidelines obligations. YouTube’s monetization rules also apply to live streams: repetitive or mass-produced material can fall under its “inauthentic content” policy, while reused-content review considers whether repurposed material has significant original commentary, modification, or educational or entertainment value. Permission to use a clip does not by itself guarantee monetization eligibility.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube reports a weak or unstable connection: Check actual upload stability and available headroom, then reduce the video bitrate or workload and retest. A nominal internet speed alone does not establish a stable continuous feed.
- The Pi drops frames or the stream becomes unreliable: Check whether the pipeline is re-encoding, scaling, filtering, or converting audio. Try a lower resolution or frame rate, simplify processing, and observe the board during a longer test.
- YouTube receives video but not usable audio: Confirm the encoder is sending a supported audio codec and sample rate; YouTube’s stereo guidance lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps.
- The stream connects but the replay is missing or incomplete: Check how long the live session ran. YouTube warns that streams beyond 12 hours may not be captured, so preserve a local recording if a complete archive is important.
- The stream stops after a power or software interruption: Check the Pi’s power, cooling, storage, process supervision, and network. Plan and test a restart or recovery method; a successful initial connection does not prove automatic recovery.
