No. A PS5 cannot play original PS2 game discs. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide explicitly says PlayStation 2 format software cannot be played from a disc. Buying a PS5 with a disc drive—or adding a compatible disc-drive accessory to an eligible Digital Edition—does not change that. If your priority is playing your original PS2 discs, consider a PlayStation 2 console for native playback instead.
Why a PS5 disc drive does not make it PS2-compatible
A disc drive can read only the disc formats and software the console supports. Its presence does not mean it can run every game disc from an earlier PlayStation generation. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide states: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” That is the decisive answer for anyone considering a PS5 specifically to use original PS2 game discs.
Sony lists supported PS5 and compatible PS4 game discs, as well as supported video-disc types, but does not list PS2 game software as playable. The limitation is about the software format, not whether the PS5 can physically accept a disc. A PS2 disc may fit in a PS5 drive; that does not mean the console can launch the game.

| PS5 option | Can it play original PS2 game discs? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 model with a disc drive | No | The drive does not support PS2 game software. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide excludes PS2 format software from disc playback. |
| Original CFI-1000 Digital Edition | No | This model group has no disc support, according to Sony’s disc-media support information. |
| CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 Digital Edition with a separately sold disc drive | No | Sony’s UK support information says these model groups can use a separate drive. Adding it provides supported disc functionality, not PS2 game compatibility. |
Model-group details matter if you are choosing an accessory for a Digital Edition. Check the exact model number and Sony’s current model-specific support information before buying a drive. Even where the accessory is supported, it does not make original PS2 discs playable.

PS4 backward compatibility is a different claim
Sony describes PS5 as backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of PS4 games. That statement concerns PS4 titles; it does not extend to original PS2 game discs. A broad statement about backward compatibility should not be read as support for every older PlayStation format.
Sony’s current PlayStation ecosystem page says more than 4,000 PS4 games are ready to play on PS4 and PS5. Separately, Sony Interactive Entertainment used historical 2020 FAQ language saying more than 99% of 4,000-plus PS4 games could be played on PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition. Both figures refer to PS4 games—not PS2 discs—and neither establishes PS2-disc support.

Original discs, digital releases, and other ways to play
If you want to use the discs you already own
A PS2 console is the straightforward hardware alternative for native playback of original PS2 game discs. This is not PS5 emulation: it means playing the discs on the original console platform. Confirm that the console and games are suitable for your region and setup before purchasing used hardware.

If you only want to play a particular PS2 game
Playing an original disc and accessing a digital version are different questions. A digital release, remaster, or other separately offered version would not mean the PS5 can read your original PS2 disc. Check whether the specific game has an official version available for the console and region you intend to use; availability can vary by title and over time.

If your television lacks a compatible connection
A PS2-to-HDMI adapter may address a connection problem between PS2 hardware and a television, but it cannot make a PS2 disc work in a PS5. Adapter quality and compatibility vary, and no particular adapter has been established here as a reliable choice. Verify the PS2 model, television inputs, and adapter specifications rather than assuming all adapters perform alike.
Before you buy: a quick decision guide
- Your main goal is playing original PS2 discs: Do not buy a PS5 for that purpose. Consider PS2 hardware and verify its condition, region suitability, and connection to your display.
- You want a PS5 for PS5 or PS4 games and also own PS2 discs: Choose the PS5 based on its supported games and features, not the expectation that the PS2 discs will run. Keep a separate option for those discs.
- You are considering a Digital Edition disc-drive accessory: Check the exact PS5 model group and the current Sony support information for accessory compatibility. Treat drive compatibility and PS2 software compatibility as separate questions.
- You want one specific older game rather than disc playback: Check for a separately available version for PS5 in your region. Do not assume that a digital listing, if available, includes access through an original disc.
The practical buying takeaway
PS5 disc-drive models and eligible Digital Editions with an added drive do not play original PS2 game discs. PS4 backward-compatibility figures do not change that. If using your original discs is essential, choose hardware that natively supports them; if you are buying a PS5 for other reasons, treat access to any individual PS2 game as a separate availability question.
