Yes, but not through Sony’s standard PS5 software—and “120 FPS” does not mean PS2 games are generally rendered at a native 120 frames per second. The unofficial PS5SX2 emulator runs on a jailbroken PS5, and its experimental frame-generation feature can display steady 60 fps gameplay at 120 Hz on a compatible screen. A 30 fps game can be displayed at 60 Hz. The distinction matters: generated display frames are not the same as the game producing more frames itself.
What PS5SX2’s 120 Hz feature does
PS5SX2 is an unofficial PlayStation 2 emulator ported from PCSX2. Its version 2.00 release notes, listed by the PS5 Homebrew Store as updated October 8, 2026, describe experimental frame generation. The notes say: “On a 120 Hz TV a 60 fps game is shown at 120 and a 30 fps game is shown at 60.” PS5 Homebrew Store listing
This is generated display output, not a promise that the emulator renders every game at 120 fps. The feature works only while the game’s frame rate is steady, according to the release notes. It requires a 120 Hz display to show 120 Hz output; owning one does not make a game run faster or resolve compatibility problems.

A game’s frame rate describes how many frames of game action it produces per second. A display’s refresh rate describes how often the screen updates. Frame generation can create intermediate frames for display, making output appear smoother, but those frames do not mean the game itself is simulating or rendering at the same rate.

Many PS2 games were designed for 30 fps, while many PAL-disc games were designed for 25 fps, according to the PS5SX2 performance guide. Some titles have optional 60 fps patches. Those patches change the game’s frame rate behavior; they are separate from the emulator’s experimental frame-generation feature. PS5SX2 performance guide
What you need to run the emulator
PS5SX2 is homebrew, not a Sony feature in the normal PS5 interface. The project README lists a jailbroken PS5 and the PS5SX2 Helper payload, loaded with kstuff, as requirements. It describes the helper as enabling the emulator at startup and providing access to the required data directory. PS5SX2 project README

Sony’s official safety guidance says PS1, PS2, and PS3 format software cannot be played from disc on PS5. Its backward-compatibility guidance covers PS4 games on PS5; it does not provide general PS2 disc support. In other words, inserting a PS2 disc into an ordinary PS5 is not a supported way to play it. Understand Sony’s warning about modified consoles
Sony warns that installing update data from another source or by another method, or using a console that has been altered or modified, may cause the console to operate improperly or prevent it from installing official update data. Sony also says these actions can void warranty and affect warranty or repair services. This is Sony’s stated warning; it is not a specific claim that using PS5SX2 automatically results in an account ban. Sony PS5 system-software guidance

Performance depends on the game and console
There is no single PS5SX2 performance result that applies to the full PS2 library. The project’s test table reports individual game results across consoles and firmware, including examples at 30 fps, around 60 fps, and entries with dips or short play sessions. Its notes distinguish “full speed” from a game’s displayed frame rate. These are project-reported tests, not an independently measured compatibility rate or a guarantee for an untested title. Resolution and optional 60 fps patches involve trade-offs
The project documentation says PS5SX2 can use up to 6x resolution. Its performance guide says a regular PS5 or PS5 Slim has less graphics power than a PS5 Pro, that demanding games on the regular models often need 3x or 4x resolution, and that a Pro runs many games at 6x. These are the project’s guidance, not independent benchmark results.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
For some games, an optional 60 fps patch can double CPU and GPU work. The guide says that may require lowering resolution or changing other settings. A patch is therefore not automatically an improvement: whether it works acceptably depends on the particular game and the settings your console can sustain.
Check the factors that matter for your setup
- Game and patch: Look for a test entry for the specific title and firmware, and check whether its result uses an optional 60 fps patch.
- Console model: PS5, PS5 Slim, and PS5 Pro do not have identical graphics performance according to the project’s guide.
- Resolution: Higher resolution can compete with the extra workload of a 60 fps patch.
- Stability: A game that dips or cannot hold a steady frame rate may not meet the condition the experimental frame-generation feature requires.
- Display: A 120 Hz screen is needed for the described 120 Hz output; it does not address the jailbreak requirement or guarantee game performance.
Is the 120 FPS claim useful in practice?
It is useful if you already have a compatible jailbroken PS5 setup, a game that runs steadily, and a 120 Hz display. In that case, generated frames may make the displayed motion smoother. If you mean “Will PS2 games run natively at 120 fps on any PS5?”, the release notes do not support that interpretation.

The project describes its compatibility effort as ongoing and says it plans weekly updates while working toward broader PS2 library compatibility. That is a statement of intent, not a schedule guarantee or evidence that every game works. The available project tests are individual examples, not a library-wide success rate.
