A routine power outage does not automatically ruin a TV. The bigger electrical risks are abnormal voltage or power fluctuations, including those associated with power returning or lightning. If your television will not turn on afterward, check the outlet, cord, and connected power accessories before assuming the set is damaged.
Can a power outage ruin a TV?
A blackout by itself is not evidence that your TV has been damaged. A television that appears dead after an outage may simply be disconnected from power, plugged into a failed outlet or accessory, or temporarily unresponsive. Sony’s no-power troubleshooting guidance recommends resolving a blackout, brownout, or temporary power loss before troubleshooting the television.
The more relevant electrical concern is abnormal voltage or current. Sony warns that lightning-related electricity can reach a TV through either its power outlet or antenna wiring. Sony also notes that sudden abnormal electricity when power is restored can affect soundbars and home theater systems; that warning is specifically about those connected products, not proof that every TV is damaged when power returns. There is no basis here for assigning a failure rate or saying that a particular outage will ruin a television.

Work through external power checks first. The exact reset procedure varies by model, so use the television’s manual or its manufacturer’s instructions if the steps below do not match your set.

For your safety, ensure that the current power DO NOT exceed the rated power of 1875W/15A, or it may cause short circuit and fire explode hazards
- Confirm power is available. Check that electricity has returned in the home, then test the TV’s outlet with another device you know works. Sony recommends trying a known-working outlet.
- Check the TV’s power cord. Make sure it is firmly connected at the wall and, if the cord is removable, at the television. Do not use a cord that is visibly damaged.
- Bypass power accessories temporarily. If the TV is connected through a power strip, surge protector, extension cord, or smart plug, disconnect that accessory and plug the TV directly into a known-working wall outlet. A power accessory can be the source of a no-power problem, according to TCL’s troubleshooting guidance and Sony’s support instructions.
- Try the TV’s physical power button. If the set responds to its own button but not the remote, the issue may be with the remote rather than the TV’s power supply.
- Follow the model-specific reset procedure. Sony advises unplugging the TV for at least 30 seconds. TCL’s Google TV guidance says to unplug for at least 60 seconds and, if available, hold the TV’s physical button. These timings are brand- and model-specific, not a single universal reset rule.
- Disconnect external devices while troubleshooting. Remove connected devices if the manufacturer’s instructions call for it, then retry the set. Reconnect them after the TV’s power issue is resolved.
If the TV remains unresponsive, repeatedly shuts off, shows an abnormal flashing indicator, or makes unusual electrical sounds, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. Stop using it and unplug it when safe if you see smoke or sparks, smell burning, find liquid inside, or notice visible damage. TCL gives the same stop-use warning for those danger signs in its support guidance.
How to protect a TV during lightning or a power fluctuation
Before forecast lightning
If lightning is forecast and you can act safely before the storm, turn off the TV and disconnect its power cord. Sony also recommends removing attached external cables, including antenna, HDMI, and LAN connections, because abnormal voltage or current may travel through outlet or antenna wiring. LG likewise advises unplugging a TV when thunderstorms or lightning are forecast.

After an outage, wait until household power is stable before troubleshooting a no-power symptom. Avoid repeatedly switching the TV on and off while power is fluctuating. Sony’s warning about abnormal electricity on restoration specifically concerns soundbars and home theater systems, so it should not be read as a claim that a normal restoration event necessarily damages a TV.

Will a surge protector protect a TV?
A genuine surge protector is different from an ordinary power strip. A basic strip adds outlets; it does not necessarily protect devices against voltage spikes. Trane Home explains this distinction in its power outage guidance. Los Angeles County’s power outage preparation checklist includes televisions among electronics for which it recommends surge protection.
A surge protector can help protect connected electronics against spikes, but it is not a guarantee against every electrical event, especially a direct lightning event. For lightning forecast in your area, disconnecting the TV’s power and attached signal cables beforehand is the stronger precaution described by Sony and LG. LG also cautions against overloading power strips and advises replacing damaged or blackened outlets and cords.

The cited guidance does not establish a universal joule rating, a specific best model, or a promise that any protector will prevent damage in every situation. Choose a genuine surge protector appropriate for the equipment and installation, and do not treat an ordinary power strip as equivalent protection.
When to stop troubleshooting and get help
- Stop immediately: smoke, sparking, a burning smell, liquid inside the TV, or visible damage. Unplug it only if doing so is safe.
- Arrange service: the TV remains unresponsive after outlet, cord, accessory, and model-specific reset checks, or it repeatedly shuts off or behaves abnormally.
- Check the exact model guidance: reset steps and indicator meanings can vary by TV model and software. Use the manufacturer’s support page or the manual for your set.
These symptoms do not, by themselves, identify a particular failed component. The cited manufacturer instructions support basic external troubleshooting and referral for persistent or unsafe symptoms, not consumer internal repair.
