Yes—if the power station can handle both the refrigerator’s normal running load and the compressor’s brief startup surge. Its watt-hour (Wh) capacity then determines how long it can keep the refrigerator operating. Because refrigerators cycle on and off and differ substantially by model, no single station size or runtime applies to every household. Match the exact refrigerator and station specifications before an outage, and keep a food-safety fallback ready.
What must match for a refrigerator to run
A refrigerator and a portable power station have to match on two separate electrical requirements: instantaneous power and stored energy. Confusing these is the most common reason a seemingly large battery fails to start an appliance.
Continuous AC output for normal operation
Every station lists a continuous AC output, measured in watts (W). This is the power it can supply steadily while the refrigerator is running. The station’s continuous rating must exceed the refrigerator’s running demand, with enough headroom that the inverter is not operating at its limit.
Find the refrigerator’s running figure in its owner’s manual, on a specification label, or from the manufacturer. A label may show watts, amps, or volts and amps. If only amperage is listed, the manufacturer’s documentation is the best source for the appliance’s actual operating requirement; a label value alone may not describe every operating condition.

Surge or peak output for compressor startup
A refrigerator compressor can draw a short burst of power when it starts. Stations therefore list a surge, peak, or starting output in addition to continuous output. The surge rating must meet the compressor’s documented startup requirement, even when the running wattage appears comfortably below the station’s continuous rating.
Startup demand varies by refrigerator model and is not reliably inferred from cabinet size or the running number. Ask the refrigerator manufacturer for the startup requirement if the manual does not state it. Compare that figure with the station’s surge rating under the same conditions and for the duration specified by the station maker.
Watt-hours for the desired runtime
Power output answers “will it start?” Capacity answers “how long can it keep going?” A station’s battery capacity is expressed in watt-hours. More Wh generally provides more operating time, but the full nameplate capacity is not delivered to the refrigerator: the inverter consumes energy, the battery-management system reserves some capacity, and the refrigerator’s demand changes as its compressor cycles.
| Specification | What it tells you | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous AC output (W) | Power available while the refrigerator is running | Must cover the refrigerator’s running load |
| Surge/peak AC output (W) | Short-term power available at compressor startup | Must meet the documented startup requirement |
| Battery capacity (Wh) | Stored energy available over time | Choose enough for the planned outage, allowing for losses and cycling |
| Recharge method | How the station can be refilled | Match the method and charging time to the likely outage duration |
How to check your refrigerator and station step by step
- Record the refrigerator’s identity. Write down the brand, full model number, and approximate purchase year. The model number lets you find the correct manual rather than relying on a similar-looking appliance.
- Find the running requirement. Check the manual, rating plate, or manufacturer support page for running watts or amps. Note whether the specification applies to the refrigerator alone or includes another appliance or feature.
- Find the startup requirement. Look specifically for compressor starting watts, locked-rotor amps, surge watts, or a manufacturer statement about generator sizing. If the figure is missing, request it from the manufacturer instead of guessing.
- Read the station’s AC specifications. Record continuous watts, surge or peak watts, AC voltage and frequency, and usable or nominal Wh capacity if both are listed. Confirm that the station is intended for the electrical system in your region.
- Compare output ratings. The refrigerator’s running demand must be below continuous output, and its startup demand must be below the station’s surge rating. If either comparison fails, the setup is not a dependable match, regardless of battery capacity.
- Estimate the required energy. Use the refrigerator’s measured or documented average consumption and the station’s Wh rating to estimate hours. Treat the result as a planning range, not a guarantee.
- Plan recharging. A charged station can bridge a short outage. An outage lasting beyond the station’s practical runtime requires a way to recharge it or another backup source. Consumer guidance characterizes portable stations as better suited to outages lasting hours than days.
- Test before an emergency. With the refrigerator operating normally, connect it to the station according to both manuals and observe whether the compressor starts without an overload shutdown. A controlled test can reveal an incompatibility while grid power is still available.
Estimating runtime without making a false promise
A simple planning equation is:
Estimated hours ≈ usable station watt-hours ÷ refrigerator’s average watts

Use average watts over a representative period, not just the brief number shown while the compressor is on. Refrigerators cycle, so their average demand is usually lower than their instantaneous running demand. Inverter and battery losses, ambient temperature, door openings, food loading, and the refrigerator’s condition all reduce or change the result.
For example, Consumer Reports describes an illustrative calculation in which a station advertised with 3,600 Wh and 3,600 W of output would run a continuous 3,600 W load for one hour. That arithmetic is a demonstration of the ratings, not a refrigerator benchmark. The same article gives a refrigerator-only illustration using an assumed 700 W draw; it is an assumption for that example, not typical consumption and not a runtime guarantee for your appliance.
To make your estimate more useful, obtain an energy figure in one of these forms:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- A manufacturer-provided daily or annual energy-use value for the exact model.
- A measured average wattage over several compressor cycles.
- An appliance energy estimate from a reliable database, used only when the model and measurement conditions match.
Do not divide the station’s advertised Wh by the refrigerator’s startup watts. Startup is a brief event; using it as a continuous load produces a meaningless runtime. Conversely, dividing by the refrigerator’s running label alone can be optimistic because it ignores cycling behavior and conversion losses.

Why two refrigerators can produce different runtimes
Compressor cycling
The compressor does not run continuously under normal conditions. It runs longer when the cabinet is warm and less often after the set temperature is restored. A station may therefore last much longer than a calculation based on the compressor’s instantaneous running wattage suggests.
Ambient temperature and ventilation
Heat around the refrigerator can increase compressor operation. The amount of food, how often the door is opened, and whether warm groceries are added also affect energy use. These factors make a runtime observed in one home unsuitable as a promise for another.
Conversion and standby losses
The station’s inverter converts battery power to AC and consumes some energy while enabled. The refrigerator may also draw small amounts for controls, lighting, or defrost functions. A nominal Wh figure therefore does not equal the AC energy delivered to the outlet.

Appliance age and condition
Seals, thermostats, frost buildup, and compressor condition can change consumption. Use the exact appliance’s documentation or a measurement rather than assuming that all units of the same nominal size behave alike.

Using the U.S. Department of Energy refrigerator lookup
The U.S. Department of Energy provides a refrigerator lookup tool for eligible consumer appliances. It accepts appliance type, brand, model, and year and can help identify published energy-use information when the exact model is included.
The DOE page states that its database covers units larger than 10 cubic feet and warns that not every model appears. A missing result does not mean the refrigerator has no published consumption data, and a database energy figure does not replace a startup specification. Use the lookup as an additional estimate, then obtain compressor-start information from the refrigerator maker or manual.

Can a plug-in meter tell you what the refrigerator needs?
A plug-in electricity meter can help estimate the refrigerator’s average energy use over several hours or days. It is a secondary tool, not a requirement, and it should be used while the appliance is operating normally.
The cited consumer guidance does not establish that a household plug-in meter accurately captures compressor startup surge. Do not use a meter’s average or displayed running value as proof that a station’s surge rating is sufficient. Keep the manufacturer’s startup specification as the deciding figure for that comparison.
What to do if the refrigerator will not run from the station
- The station shuts down immediately: Check whether the AC output is enabled, the battery is charged, and the refrigerator’s startup requirement exceeds the station’s surge rating.
- The station reports overload during startup: Disconnect other loads and compare the compressor’s documented starting demand with the station’s peak rating. Repeated overloads indicate a compatibility problem, not a runtime problem.
- The refrigerator starts but stops soon: Recalculate using usable Wh and average consumption, and account for inverter losses and compressor cycling. A large startup rating does not add battery capacity.
- The station runs but the refrigerator behaves unusually: Stop the test and check the voltage, frequency, outlet mode, and both manuals. Use only settings and connections approved for the appliance and station.
- The model’s energy data cannot be found: Contact the refrigerator manufacturer, check the manual and rating plate, and use the DOE lookup only if the model falls within its stated coverage.
Food safety when the battery is empty
Backup power is not the only protection during an outage. Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Ready.gov’s 2025 guidance says a closed refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReady.gov also advises discarding refrigerated food that has been exposed to 40°F (4°C) or higher for more than four hours. If the station cannot keep the appliance operating, switch to this food-safety guidance rather than repeatedly opening the door to check contents. The four-hour figure is an approximate food-safety interval, not a prediction of how long any particular refrigerator will remain below a safe temperature.
