Yes, but only for some games. A newer console can make a compatible older game load faster, run at a higher or steadier frame rate, display at a higher resolution, or look different with HDR processing. Those benefits depend on the specific game and may come from backward compatibility, a console feature, or a separate version or update made for the new hardware. Compatibility alone does not promise an upgrade.

Before buying a console for one older game, check that the exact edition works and what improvements are actually listed. The original game running through backward compatibility is not the same thing as a new, enhanced version of that game.

What a newer console can change

A more powerful console can provide extra processing and storage capability, but the game must be able to benefit from it. Some older games run much as they did on their original hardware. Others receive a measurable boost through a platform feature, or an update that adds options specifically for the newer console.

It helps to separate four questions: can the game run, does it run more smoothly, does it look different, and does it load faster? A “yes” to the first does not automatically answer the others. A game may be playable without any stated frame-rate or resolution increase; a boost to one aspect does not establish that every other aspect improved.

  • Performance: whether it runs at a higher or steadier frame rate.
  • Image quality: whether resolution, HDR presentation, or other graphics features change.
  • Loading: whether the game’s load times are shorter.

These distinctions matter when deciding whether a console upgrade solves a particular problem. If you want a specific game to run at 60 frames per second, for example, general claims about a console being more powerful are not enough: look for that game’s listed frame rate or a supported feature that applies to it.

How improvements happen

Backward compatibility may run the old game without changing it

Backward compatibility is the ability to play an older console’s game on newer hardware. It is primarily a compatibility answer, not a blanket promise of improved graphics or speed. The older game may retain its original performance limits unless the newer console or a game update changes how it runs.

For Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft lists selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games as backward compatible, and describes supported games already owned as playable without a separate compatibility charge. That does not mean every title from those generations is included. Check the title in Xbox’s backward-compatible games information before relying on support.

On PS5, Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable, while also listing exceptions and caveats. The current PS4 games playable on PS5 support page is a better check for a particular title than treating compatibility as universal.

Automatic or platform-level features can boost selected games

Xbox FPS Boost is a platform feature for selected backward-compatible games. Microsoft’s February 17, 2021 launch announcement gave examples of New Super Lucky’s Tale running at up to 120 frames per second and UFC 4 running at 60 frames per second on Xbox Series S. These are title-specific examples from the initial announcement, not a general promise for other games. See Microsoft’s FPS Boost announcement for its examples and details.

Xbox also described a specific case in which Fallout 4’s frame rate was effectively doubled from 30 to 60 frames per second on Series S. In its October 13, 2020 explanation, Microsoft said the frame-rate doubling technique could not be used with many games because their physics or animations were designed around the original rate. A higher frame rate is not always a simple switch: changing it can affect how a game behaves. Read Microsoft’s explanation of backward compatibility across four Xbox generations for that limitation.

On PS5, Game Boost may let select PS4 games run at a higher or smoother frame rate. Sony’s launch-era FAQ described this as automatic for compatible PS4 games. That FAQ is dated guidance rather than a current title-by-title performance list, so confirm the expected result for the game you care about. Sony’s current support page also warns that some PS4 functionality may be unavailable and that some games may show errors or behave unexpectedly.

A separate newer-console version can add its own options

A game released or updated specifically for the newer console may include graphics and performance choices that are not part of the old version’s backward-compatibility behavior. Sony’s examples include Final Fantasy VII Remake, with a performance mode targeting 60 frames per second and a graphics mode targeting 4K, and DOOM Eternal, whose free PS5 update described balanced and ray-tracing modes targeting 60 frames per second plus a 120-frames-per-second mode. These are examples of game-specific PS5 versions or updates, not universal effects of running a PS4 copy on PS5. Sony’s PS4 games upgraded for PS5 guide describes these examples.

When you see an “upgrade” or “next-generation version” mentioned, check whether it is a separate edition or update and whether your copy is eligible. Do not assume that owning or inserting the older edition automatically gives you every feature of the newer version.

What can improve: frame rate, resolution, HDR, and loading

Frame rate

Frame rate is the number of images a game displays each second. A higher rate can make motion appear smoother and controls feel more responsive, but only if the game actually runs at that rate. A console’s maximum output capability is not the same as a particular older game’s frame rate. Look for a title-specific target or a documented feature such as FPS Boost or Game Boost.

“Up to” figures also need care. Microsoft’s FPS Boost launch examples use that wording for New Super Lucky’s Tale; it should not be read as a guaranteed result for every game or every situation. Likewise, the 60- and 120-fps targets in Sony’s update examples describe those named modes, not a baseline for the entire PS4 library.

Resolution and image processing

Microsoft says selected backward-compatible Xbox games can render at up to 4K. It also describes Auto HDR, which can add HDR processing to selected games originally designed for standard dynamic range (SDR). These are separate kinds of visual change: a resolution increase affects image detail, while HDR affects how a display presents brightness and color. Neither feature applies to every older game, and HDR processing does not turn the game into a newly authored version.

Sony’s PS5 FAQ said select PS4 games could benefit from fidelity changes, including games with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution. Those are conditions that may allow a game to make better use of newer hardware, not a promise that every PS4 game will run at a higher resolution. A separately updated PS5 version can offer more explicit graphics choices, as the named examples show.

Loading

Sony’s launch-era PS5 FAQ said select PS4 games could have increased loading speeds. It does not establish a loading-time improvement for every compatible game or provide a current, universal timing figure. If loading is the main reason for your upgrade, look for a claim tied to the exact game and version rather than assuming all older titles load faster.

Xbox Series X|S and PS5: what the official information establishes

The following is a comparison of the platforms’ published compatibility and feature descriptions, not a controlled head-to-head performance test. It cannot establish that one console is universally better for older games.

Question Xbox Series X|S PlayStation 5
Which older games? Selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games, according to Microsoft’s backward-compatibility overview. The overwhelming majority of PS4 games; Sony’s current support page lists caveats and exceptions.
Performance features FPS Boost applies to selected games. Microsoft also describes performance improvements for some backward-compatible games; neither statement means every title receives a boost. Game Boost may improve the frame rate for select PS4 games. The launch-era FAQ described automatic operation for compatible games.
Visual changes Selected games can render at up to 4K; Auto HDR can process selected SDR games. Select games may gain fidelity improvements through compatibility behavior, while separate PS5 versions can add title-specific modes.
Important caveat Some games’ physics or animations prevent frame-rate doubling. Some PS4 functionality may be unavailable, and some games may show errors or unexpected behavior. PS4 discs require a PS5 with a disc drive.

The PS5’s disc requirement applies if you want to play a PS4 disc: a console without a disc drive cannot read it. Digital copies and upgrade eligibility have their own edition and terms, so check those details for the game rather than assuming that a disc and a digital copy follow the same path.

How to check whether your game will benefit

Use this check before buying a console, another edition, or an add-on. It separates the question “will it run?” from “will it run better?”

  1. Write down the exact game and edition. Record whether you own a disc or digital copy and, if relevant, the console generation the copy was made for. Game names alone can be misleading when a publisher sells distinct editions.
  2. Confirm compatibility on the platform’s official page. Search the Xbox backward-compatibility information or Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility support page. If the exact edition is not listed or the status is unclear, do not treat support as guaranteed.
  3. Identify the kind of improvement being claimed. Is the claim only that the old game is playable, or does it name a frame-rate boost, resolution, HDR feature, faster loading, or a separate newer-console version? These are different benefits.
  4. Check the claim against the title and mode. Note whether the stated number is a target, an “up to” figure, or a feature for a particular version. Do not transfer a result from one game to another.
  5. Check edition, upgrade, and hardware requirements. Confirm whether an update or newer-console edition is separate, whether your copy qualifies, and whether playing a disc requires a disc-drive console. The exact terms can depend on the title.
  6. Try what you already own when possible. Sony recommends trying compatible games on PS5 before purchasing add-ons for them. Testing your copy can establish whether it launches and behaves as expected before you spend more.

Microsoft reported that it had put more than 500,000 hours into gameplay testing across four Xbox generations in the year before Series X|S launched. That is Microsoft’s reported testing figure, not an independent measurement of how much any individual game improves. Its current backward-compatibility page says supported titles are enhanced while preserving expected playability; the title-specific checks above remain necessary to determine what changes in a game you play.

Why an older game may not improve as expected

  • The game is not supported. Backward compatibility covers selected games, not every title from a previous generation. Verify the exact game before relying on it.
  • It runs, but has no listed boost. Compatibility can preserve the ability to play without changing the game’s frame rate, resolution, or loading behavior.
  • The feature applies only to selected titles. FPS Boost, Game Boost, resolution improvements, and Auto HDR are not universal switches for all older games.
  • The game’s design limits a frame-rate increase. Microsoft’s explanation identifies physics and animation as reasons frame-rate doubling cannot work for many games.
  • You are using the older edition, not the updated version. A separate PS5 version or update can provide options that the backward-compatible PS4 version does not. Check the specific game’s version and upgrade path.
  • Disc and digital access differ. A PS4 disc needs a PS5 with a disc drive. An upgrade or digital entitlement can have separate eligibility terms, which must be checked for that title.
  • Compatibility is not flawless in every case. Sony warns that some PS4 functionality may be absent and that certain games can display errors or unexpected behavior on PS5.

Which console should you choose for older games?

Start with the games you actually want to play, not a general performance ranking. If your library is mainly older Xbox titles, check which of those exact titles Microsoft supports and whether the improvements you want are documented. If it is mainly PS4 games, check Sony’s compatibility page and whether a particular game has a PS5 update or version with the mode you want.

If your priority is a named frame rate, higher resolution, HDR processing, or shorter loading, make that a purchase requirement and verify it against an official title-specific listing. If a source only establishes that a game is compatible, treat the performance result as unstated. The official Xbox and PlayStation descriptions establish that both platforms can improve selected older games; they do not support a universal verdict that one platform improves every older game more than the other.
