A mirror can change how Wi-Fi signals travel through a room, but it is not a universal Wi-Fi blocker. Its reflective surface may redirect radio energy and alter the paths signals take to your device. The effect depends on the mirror and the surrounding layout; available sources do not establish a typical signal loss for an ordinary household mirror.

Why can a mirror affect Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi uses radio waves. When those waves encounter objects, some energy may be reflected or absorbed. Reflection can redirect a signal, changing how much reaches a device by a direct path or after bouncing off surfaces. That can affect reception in a particular spot without the mirror stopping Wi-Fi altogether.

Keenetic’s Wi-Fi guidance describes mirrors as strongly reflective and notes that obstacles can reflect or absorb signal energy. Ofcom’s 2024 report, prepared with Queen Mary University of London, says the impact of reflective surfaces is scenario-specific. Its report concerns engineered reflective surfaces and modeled wireless-network scenarios below 6 GHz—not controlled tests of household mirrors—so its findings provide context for the physics rather than a measurement of what a wall mirror does at home.

Do mirrors block Wi-Fi, or make it weaker?

“Block” is too definite. A mirror may contribute to a weaker or less reliable connection at a particular location, but the result depends on the surface and radio environment, including the router’s position, distance, and other obstacles. The sources available do not provide a reliable, mirror-specific Wi-Fi loss figure or a controlled test of an ordinary wall mirror.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Keenetic publishes approximate additional-loss figures for selected obstacles at 2.4 GHz, including 3 dB for an untinted window, 5–8 dB for a metalized tinted window, 15–20 dB for a 15.2 cm interior wall, and 20–25 dB for a 30.5 cm bearing wall. These are not mirror measurements and should not be used to estimate a mirror’s effect.

What does a home experiment suggest?

A 2019 INTERNET Watch experiment tested an aluminum window blind, not a mirror. With the router about five metres from the measurement position, closing the blind produced only a small signal-strength improvement; the writer noted that it might have been within measurement error. This result does not establish what a household mirror will do, but it is a reminder that a reflective surface does not necessarily produce a large, easily measurable change.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

In that same setup, the publication recorded stronger signal readings on 2.4 GHz than on 5 GHz at the same position, with the gap more apparent farther away. That is an observation from one home test, not a universal rule or a comparison of Wi-Fi performance with and without a mirror. Other obstacles and local interference can also affect readings.

How to check whether a mirror is affecting your connection

  1. Check the problem spot. Compare the connection or signal-strength reading near the mirror with readings elsewhere, keeping the device and its orientation consistent.
  2. Change one thing at a time. If practical, take readings with the mirror in its usual position and with the device or router moved so the mirror is no longer in the same signal path. Avoid attributing a difference to the mirror if distance or other obstacles also changed.
  3. Consider the whole layout. Note the router’s distance from the device and any walls or other obstructions between them. A weak reading alone cannot identify the mirror as the cause.
  4. Look for a repeatable difference. A small change may reflect normal measurement variation; the aluminum-blind experiment reported only a small possible improvement and raised that limitation.

If the connection remains poor beyond the mirror’s location, treat it as a broader coverage problem rather than assuming the mirror is responsible. Keenetic’s guidance on Wi-Fi obstacles and placement offers general troubleshooting context, but it does not establish that any particular remedy will resolve a mirror-related issue.
