Yes—a suitable 128 GB mini PC can run local AI models, including some very large ones. However, 128 GB is only the capacity ceiling. The model’s quantization, context length, memory architecture, bandwidth, graphics allocation, runtime support and the memory consumed by your operating system determine what actually fits and how responsive it feels.

What 128 GB lets a mini PC do

A 128 GB mini PC has enough memory for a broad range of local language models. Small 7B to 24B models are generally straightforward when appropriately quantized, while 70B-class and some mixture-of-experts (MoE) models can be possible on systems with fast shared memory and a compatible runtime. The practical question is not simply whether the computer has 128 GB installed; it is how much of that memory the inference backend can use and how quickly data can move between memory and the processor.

For example, AMD says its Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system with 128 GB can run models from 1B parameters through very large models such as Mistral Large with GGUF quantization options. In a separate demonstration, AMD ran Meta Llama 4 Scout, a 109B-parameter MoE model with 17B parameters active during an inference step, through llama.cpp. AMD reported up to 15 tokens per second and a 256,000-token context when using Flash Attention and an 8-bit KV cache. Those figures describe AMD’s particular hardware and software configuration, not every 128 GB mini PC. AMD’s technical article also stresses that all 109 billion parameters still have to reside in memory even though only 17 billion are active for an individual step.

The named compact example is MSI’s PRO MAX Edge AI+, available with 128 GB of LPDDR5X unified memory and up to 96 GB allocatable to graphics. A TechRadar review describes a configuration with an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor, Radeon 8060S integrated graphics, 128 GB unified memory and a 2 TB M.2 PCIe Gen 4 x4 SSD. MSI’s specification and the review are useful because they distinguish total memory from the portion software can assign to graphics. Capacity is not the same as speed

Memory capacity answers “will the model load?” Throughput answers “how long will each generated token take?” Decoding is sequential: the system repeatedly reads model weights and computes the next token. Tom’s Hardware explains why memory bandwidth is therefore a major factor for local inference. Its July 2026 comparison lists 256 GB/s for Ryzen AI Max+ 395, 273 GB/s for Nvidia GB10 and 546 GB/s for the tested M4 Max configuration. These are platform-specific measurements and do not establish a universal ranking; driver support, kernel performance, quantization and workload also matter. Read the full comparison for the test context.

A model can fit in 128 GB yet generate slowly if its weights must be streamed through a relatively narrow memory interface, if the processor has limited compute, or if the runtime cannot use the integrated GPU efficiently. Conversely, a smaller model with a well-supported backend may feel much faster than a larger model that barely fits.

Unified memory, ordinary RAM and discrete VRAM

Unified memory

On a unified-memory design, the CPU and integrated GPU draw from one physical pool. This lets an inference runtime place a large model in shared memory and use the GPU without copying the entire model into a separate VRAM bank. The MSI configuration has 128 GB of LPDDR5X unified memory, with up to 96 GB available for graphics according to MSI’s specification. The remaining capacity is needed for the operating system, applications, runtime allocations and model context.

System RAM shared with an iGPU

A conventional mini PC may use DDR5 system memory and allow its integrated GPU to reserve part of that pool. Intel describes a tested Asus NUC 14 Pro with 96 GB of DDR5-5600 and an arrangement in which up to half of system RAM could be used as graphics memory. Intel says that setup could run a 70B Llama model. The result belongs to that specific NUC, driver stack, model and configuration; it is not a guarantee that every 96 GB or 128 GB system will behave the same way. Intel’s explanation is available in its developer guide.

Discrete GPU memory

A discrete GPU normally has its own VRAM. Ordinary system RAM is not automatically equivalent to that VRAM: a runtime may offload some layers to the GPU and leave others on the CPU, but transfers across the system bus can reduce performance. When comparing a discrete-GPU workstation with a unified-memory mini PC, check dedicated VRAM, supported offload modes and the model’s actual measured speed rather than adding system RAM and VRAM into one headline number.

How much memory does a model really need?

The model file is only one part of the budget. Reserve capacity for quantized weights, the key-value (KV) cache used by the context window, runtime workspace, graphics allocations, the operating system and other applications. A long context can consume substantial additional memory even when the model weights remain unchanged. Vision or multimodal models can require extra buffers for image or video inputs.

A 2026 CEUR Workshop Proceedings paper gives approximate Q4 GGUF footprints and comfortable minimum RAM figures for three examples. The values vary with tokenizer, vocabulary and quantization metadata, so use them as planning examples rather than universal requirements.

Model example Approximate Q4 GGUF file Paper’s comfortable minimum RAM What 128 GB changes
Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct 3.7 GB 8 GB or more Leaves ample room for a long context and other desktop software.
Gemma-3-12B-it 6.7 GB 12 GB or more Usually leaves substantial headroom for runtime and KV-cache allocations.
Mistral-Small-3.1-24B-Instruct-2503 13.4 GB 16 GB or more Provides room for larger contexts, but speed still depends on bandwidth and backend support.

These figures come from the paper “Deploying LLMs on CPU-only Environments with llama.cpp Library Set: MedLocalGPT Project Case”. A Q4 file’s size does not mean the process will consume exactly that amount: metadata, temporary buffers and the KV cache add overhead. Higher-quality quantization can improve output quality but increase the weight footprint; lower-bit quantization saves memory but may affect quality.

What model sizes are realistic?

Small and medium models: the easiest fit

Quantized 7B, 12B and 24B models fit comfortably on a 128 GB machine in many configurations. They are the sensible starting point for chat, summarization, coding assistance and retrieval-augmented generation. You can allocate more memory to context or run supporting services without immediately approaching the system’s limit.

70B-class models: feasible, but configuration-dependent

Intel’s 96 GB NUC example demonstrates that a 70B Llama model can run when the iGPU allocation, drivers and runtime cooperate. A 128 GB machine offers more capacity, but it does not automatically provide more speed. Expect a large difference between a model fully supported by a GPU backend and one that falls back mostly to CPU execution.

Large MoE models: unusual but possible

MoE models have many total parameters but activate only a subset for each token. That reduces compute per step, not the memory required for the complete weight set. AMD’s Llama 4 Scout demonstration illustrates the distinction: 109B total parameters and 17B active parameters still required all 109B parameters to be resident. Its reported 15-token-per-second result and 256,000-token context used specified Flash Attention and 8-bit KV-cache settings, so treat them as a vendor demonstration rather than a baseline for other mini PCs.

Discrete-GPU desktop or workstation A CCBE technical guide gives a September 2025 price-basis example of a system with 128 GB system RAM, multiple lower-cost GPUs and 24 GB VRAM for 20–40B text-only models at what it calls a comfortable speed; the estimate was about €2,000 excluding VAT. Dedicated VRAM and multiple GPUs can improve throughput and leave the CPU available for other work. Model size may be constrained by VRAM, multi-GPU support, power, noise, cooling and cost. The cited price is an estimate based on September 2025 prices, not a current quote. Source: CCBE guide.

How to check a specific mini PC before buying

  1. Identify the memory architecture. Confirm whether the advertised 128 GB is unified memory, replaceable system RAM, or a combination of system RAM and discrete VRAM. Ask how much can be allocated to graphics and how much remains for the operating system.
  2. Choose the exact model and quantization. Record the parameter count, file format (such as GGUF), quantization level and intended context length. Do not use the parameter count alone as a fit test.
  3. Budget the full working set. Add model weights, KV-cache space for your context, runtime workspace, graphics reservation and normal desktop use. Leave headroom rather than planning to consume all 128 GB.
  4. Verify backend support. Check that your operating system, graphics driver and inference runtime support the processor’s GPU or accelerator and the model format. Confirm whether the runtime can offload layers or will run primarily on the CPU.
  5. Find a measurement for your workload. Prefer tokens-per-second results for the same model, quantization, context and runtime. A headline speed from another model or a vendor demo is not interchangeable.
  6. Check sustained cooling. Mini PCs can reduce clocks when heat builds up. Look for sustained rather than instantaneous performance, fan noise and the power mode used for the measurement.
  7. Confirm storage and upgrade paths. Model files can occupy many gigabytes. Check the included SSD, available M.2 slot, supported form factor and whether storage or memory is replaceable. The reviewed MSI configuration includes a 2 TB M.2 PCIe Gen 4 x4 SSD, while its memory is soldered.

Setting up a 128 GB system for local inference

Start with a model that leaves headroom

Install a quantized model whose file size is comfortably below the usable memory limit. Begin with a short context and one active model. This gives the runtime room to allocate its KV cache and makes it easier to distinguish a memory problem from a driver or performance problem.

Test CPU and GPU paths separately

Run the same prompt with the runtime’s CPU-only path and its supported GPU or accelerator path when available. Record prompt-processing speed, generation speed, context length, quantization and memory use. If GPU offload produces no improvement, check driver installation, backend selection and whether the model’s operations are supported.

Increase context deliberately

Raise the context window in stages and watch memory consumption. A model that works at 8,000 tokens may fail or slow sharply at a much longer window because the KV cache grows. AMD’s 256,000-token Llama 4 Scout result required Flash Attention and an 8-bit KV cache; it should not be assumed for other runtimes or models.

Close competing workloads during benchmarks

Browsers, containers, virtual machines and image-generation tools consume memory and can compete for graphics resources. Benchmark with a repeatable prompt and a stable power mode, then repeat under normal multitasking to learn the performance you will actually experience.

Common failure modes and fixes

“Out of memory” while loading

  • Reduce quantization size or choose a smaller model.
  • Shorten the context window before changing hardware.
  • Close other applications and reduce the graphics reservation only if the runtime still has enough accelerator memory.
  • Check whether the runtime is duplicating weights between CPU and GPU memory.

The model loads but generation is painfully slow

  • Measure tokens per second rather than relying on load success.
  • Verify that the intended GPU backend is active and that the driver is current for the exact operating system.
  • Try a smaller quantized model or fewer concurrent requests.
  • Check sustained temperatures and power limits; thermal throttling can reduce speed after several minutes.

Long prompts cause sudden slowdown

The KV cache and attention work increase with context. Lower the context limit, use a runtime feature such as Flash Attention when supported, or select a quantization and cache format documented for your model. Do not assume that a high advertised maximum context is practical on every memory configuration.

A model uses only the CPU

This usually indicates missing backend support, an incompatible driver, an unsupported operation or a runtime configured for CPU execution. Confirm the accelerator backend and model format first; buying more RAM will not correct a software compatibility problem.

How to compare systems fairly

When evaluating more than one mini PC, compare the usable model budget and measured workload results rather than the “128 GB” label. Record these items for each candidate:

  • Usable memory: total capacity, graphics allocation limit, discrete VRAM and room left for the operating system.
  • Measured throughput: prompt-processing and generation tokens per second for your exact model, quantization, context and runtime.
  • Software compatibility: operating system, driver maturity, accelerator backend and supported model formats.
  • Workload type: text-only, vision or multimodal input; single-user interaction or concurrent requests; short or very long context.
  • Ownership factors: price, power draw, cooling, noise, ports, SSD capacity and whether memory or storage can be upgraded.

The bandwidth figures published by Tom’s Hardware—256 GB/s for Ryzen AI Max+ 395, 273 GB/s for Nvidia GB10 and 546 GB/s for its tested M4 Max—show why memory throughput belongs in that comparison. They do not, by themselves, predict your application’s speed or justify ignoring software support and thermals.

Bottom line for different buyers

For chat, coding and document work

A 128 GB unified-memory mini PC is generous for quantized small and medium models and gives you flexibility to test larger ones. Prioritize a mature runtime, quiet sustained cooling and fast storage over the largest theoretical context number.

For experimenting with 70B and larger models

Choose a platform with documented shared-memory or GPU-offload support and look for measurements using the exact model family. Intel’s 96 GB NUC example and AMD’s 128 GB Llama 4 Scout demonstration show what is possible, but neither result transfers automatically to another machine.

For highest throughput or multiple users

A discrete-GPU workstation may be preferable when dedicated VRAM, multiple accelerators and sustained cooling matter more than miniaturization. Compare the complete system cost and power requirements with a unified-memory mini PC, and verify that your runtime supports multi-GPU execution.

In every case, treat 128 GB as an enabler, not a performance guarantee. The right purchase is the system that has enough usable memory for your chosen model and context, a supported inference backend, sufficient bandwidth and cooling, and a measured speed that matches how you plan to use it.
