Yes, it can. A cancellation request and the order’s final state are different things: a fill may occur before cancellation takes effect. Kraken Futures documents fills and cancellations as separate lifecycle events, but its API documentation does not establish a universal rule that every successful cancel response means no fill occurred during the cancellation race.
What a successful cancel does—and does not—tell you
A cancel request asks Kraken Futures to stop an order that is still working. It does not, by itself, establish the order’s final filled quantity. A partial or full execution can occur around the time a cancellation is being processed, so check the resulting order state and trade records rather than treating the request acknowledgement as proof that the order had zero fills.
Kraken Futures’ open-orders feed documents a cumulative filled amount and lifecycle reasons that distinguish partial_fill, full_fill, and cancelled_by_user. Fully filled and cancelled orders are removed from the open-orders snapshot. The feed is useful for tracking state while an order is open, but its documentation does not specify a universal matching-engine sequencing guarantee for every successful cancel response. Cancellation is an operation that must be processed by the venue. If an eligible execution reaches the matching process before the cancellation takes effect, the order may fill first. Kraken’s MENA Market Rulebook states: “Cancellation requests may not be processed immediately, and accordingly an Open Order may be executed after a cancellation request for that Order has been submitted.” Kraken Market Rulebook MENA.

That rulebook is specific to MENA. It should not be treated as the controlling contractual rule for every Kraken Futures customer or jurisdiction. The Futures API documentation reviewed here describes order events and history, but does not set out a universal engine-level ordering rule between a cancellation acknowledgement and every possible execution. Therefore, a successful response alone is not a sound basis for concluding that no fill occurred.
How to verify whether a fill occurred
- Record the order and cancellation details. Keep the Kraken order ID, your request and response timestamps, and any client order identifier used for the order.
- Check authenticated order updates. Inspect the order’s final lifecycle reason and cumulative filled amount. A partial fill followed by cancellation means some quantity executed; a full fill means the order was completed rather than left open.
- Reconcile against trade history. Review account trade records for executions around the cancellation time, including their price, size, and timestamp. Kraken’s trade-history documentation describes a response limited to the most recent 100 trades within the prior seven days or since the most recent trading-engine restart, whichever is sooner. - Use public order events only for their intended scope. Kraken’s public order-events history documents market-level events, including cancellation-event data such as timestamp and reduced quantity. It is not a substitute for the private order and trade records for your account. Kraken Futures Get Public Order Events.
For API integrations, use authenticated order updates alongside history reconciliation when needed. A streaming connection can have gaps, so retain identifiers and timestamps to make it possible to investigate a disconnect or uncertain sequence. Kraken documents client order identifiers (cl_ord_id) for use with cancellation or amendment requests; recording that value alongside the Kraken order ID can make it easier to connect an order with later actions. What the dead-man’s switch can and cannot do
Kraken Futures’ dead-man’s-switch endpoint starts a timer that cancels all of a user’s orders if the timer expires. Kraken recommends refreshing it every 15–20 seconds with a 60-second timeout. It is a fail-safe for situations such as network malfunction, not an instant per-order cancellation and not a guarantee against executions before cancellation takes effect. How to interpret the outcome
- Cancelled with zero filled: the records show no execution before the cancellation took effect.
- Partially filled, then cancelled: some quantity executed; the remainder was cancelled.
- Fully filled: the order completed. A later cancellation request could not undo that execution.
Use the account’s order updates and trade records to determine which outcome occurred. The cancellation acknowledgement and the final execution record answer different questions.
