Yes. A HomePod mini or HomePod (2nd generation) can play audio from a Mac over AirPlay. Put the Mac and HomePod on the same network, then choose the speaker in Apple Music or in macOS Control Centre. Apple Music can send playback to multiple speakers; Control Centre can select only one speaker at a time.
Which HomePods support Mac audio?
Apple’s specifications for both current models list Mac as an AirPlay source. The HomePod mini was introduced in 2020, while HomePod (2nd generation) was introduced in 2023. Each model also supports multi-room AirPlay and stereo pairing.

Apple’s compatibility wording does not make Mac AirPlay exclusive to one application: the Mac can send Apple Music playback, and macOS can route sound from another app through its Sound controls.

How to play Mac audio through one HomePod
Apple Music
- Connect the Mac and HomePod to the same network.
- Open Apple Music and start a track.
- Click the AirPlay button in the playback controls.
- Select the HomePod mini or HomePod (2nd generation) you want to use.
The selected HomePod becomes the AirPlay output for Apple Music playback. You can select more than one compatible speaker from Apple Music when you want synchronized audio in multiple rooms.

Audio from another Mac app
- Keep the Mac and HomePod on the same network.
- Open macOS Control Centre from the menu bar.
- Choose Sound, then choose AirPlay.
- Select the HomePod.
This route is intended for audio produced by the Mac outside Apple Music, such as a video or another application. Apple’s Mac instructions specify that Control Centre cannot stream audio to multiple speakers at once.
Can two HomePods act as Mac stereo speakers?
Yes, but the pair must use two speakers of the same model. A stereo pair can therefore be two HomePod mini speakers or two HomePod (2nd generation) speakers. Mixing one mini with one second-generation HomePod does not meet Apple’s documented stereo-pair examples.
After creating the stereo pair in the Home app, select the pair as the AirPlay destination. The Mac still sends audio wirelessly over AirPlay; this is not a wired monitor connection, and Apple’s cited material does not publish a latency figure or promise low-latency performance for Mac use.

What the Mac setup does—and does not—do

HomePod mini or HomePod (2nd generation)?
Choose based on the room and the rest of your Apple setup rather than Mac compatibility: both models support Mac AirPlay. The mini is the compact option for desks, bedrooms and distributed rooms. The second-generation HomePod is the larger choice when you want more room-filling output from each speaker. Two matching minis or two matching second-generation HomePods can provide a stereo-pair plan.
If Apple TV home theatre is also a goal, HomePod has a separate Apple TV 4K configuration. Apple documents that setup as routing Apple TV sound—including system and game audio—to HomePod, with Dolby-capable home-theatre features. That Apple TV arrangement is distinct from sending Mac audio by AirPlay and does not turn the Mac connection into a wired or guaranteed low-latency link.

Why your Mac might not see the HomePod
Check the network first
Confirm that both devices are connected to the same network, as required by Apple’s documented Mac AirPlay workflow. A guest network, separate wireless bands configured as isolated networks, or a HomePod connected to a different network can prevent discovery.
Use the correct control
For Apple Music, use the AirPlay control inside the playback window. For other applications, use macOS Control Centre, then Sound and AirPlay. Looking only in Apple Music will not change output for every other app, and looking in Control Centre will not provide multi-speaker selection.
Reduce the test to one speaker
When troubleshooting, select a single HomePod first. Once one speaker appears and plays correctly, test a stereo pair or Apple Music’s multi-speaker selection. Control Centre will not show a multi-speaker output option because Apple explicitly limits that control to one speaker.
Bottom line for Mac owners
A current HomePod mini and HomePod (2nd generation) can both serve as Mac AirPlay speakers. Same-network connectivity is the key prerequisite; Apple Music handles multiple destinations, while macOS Control Centre handles one destination for system audio from other apps. For stereo, use two matching HomePods, and treat Apple TV home theatre as a separate configuration.
