Yes. Keeping your recovery phrase secret prevents someone from using that backup to restore your wallet, but it does not eliminate every way funds can be stolen. Someone with physical access might target the device, malware might alter a transaction you are about to approve, or a fake setup or support request might trick you into revealing the phrase. Your risk depends on the wallet model, its firmware, how it is set up, and what you verify before signing.

What keeping your recovery phrase private does—and does not—protect

Your recovery phrase is a master backup credential: anyone who obtains it can use it to restore the wallet elsewhere. Keeping it private blocks that route to your funds. It does not guarantee that the device, the transaction you approve, or the process used to set up and maintain the wallet is safe.

That distinction matters because a hardware wallet can protect the private keys while still depending on a connected computer or phone to prepare transactions. If you approve a transfer without checking its details on the wallet itself, you may authorize a payment to the wrong address without ever sharing the phrase.

How a wallet can be compromised without sharing the phrase

Physical access to the device

A stolen or accessible device may be targeted directly. In a January 2019 disclosure, Ledger Donjon described a physical seed-extraction attack involving Trezor One, Trezor T, KeepKey, and clones, using specialized equipment and access to the device. That is a historical, model-specific disclosure—not evidence that every current hardware wallet is vulnerable. Ledger Donjon’s disclosure

Defenses and recovery procedures differ by model. Trezor’s security overview says that Safe 3 and Safe 5 verify the PIN inside a Secure Element, while Model T and Model One do not have hardware-enforced rate limiting. It also describes a Model One recovery procedure that enters backup words on a computer in randomized order. Those differences affect the threat model; a claim about one model should not be applied to all hardware wallets. Trezor’s security overview

Ledger also describes physical techniques such as power glitching and the countermeasures it says its Secure Element uses. Those are the vendor’s descriptions of its own products, not independent proof that every device is invulnerable. Ledger Academy’s explanation of physical attacks

Malware or a misleading transaction

Clipboard malware can replace a copied cryptocurrency address with an attacker’s address. A 2021 academic study abstract describes EthClipper, a type of malware designed to evade address verification, and reports testing it with Trezor, Ledger, and KeepKey wallets. The study describes a threat and tests; it does not establish how often such theft occurs. The EthClipper study abstract

Before signing, inspect the recipient address and transaction details on the hardware wallet’s own screen—not only in the connected computer or phone interface. Reject the transaction if the displayed information is unexpected or does not match what you intended.

Fake setup, phishing, and social engineering

A scammer may ask you to type the phrase into a fake website, app, or support form. This bypasses the device’s protections: once someone has the phrase, they can restore the wallet elsewhere. Ledger advises users not to enter the phrase on a computer or smartphone, not to share it, and not to use a preconfigured device. It also notes that self-custody does not eliminate social engineering, physical threats, or human error. Ledger Academy’s hardware-wallet security guidance

What a passphrase adds—and what it costs

Some wallets support an optional passphrase that changes the wallet derived from the recovery phrase. In that setup, someone who learns the recovery phrase may still need the passphrase to access the passphrase-protected wallet. Trezor’s firmware documentation describes passphrase entry through the host computer as well as an on-device option; the exact flow depends on the device and firmware. Its Safe 5 FAQ says that accessing a passphrase-protected wallet requires both the backup and the passphrase. Trezor firmware passphrase documentation Trezor Safe 5 FAQs

A passphrase is another secret to protect and remember. If you forget it or enter it through an insecure flow, you may lose access or undermine the added protection. Follow the instructions for your exact wallet model; do not assume a short or easily guessed phrase provides meaningful security.

Practical steps to reduce the risk

  1. Set up the device yourself. Use the manufacturer’s official setup process and reject a device that arrives already configured. A setup that provides a recovery phrase in advance is not trustworthy. Ledger’s security guidance
  2. Keep the recovery phrase offline. Do not photograph it, put it in cloud storage, or type it into a website, phone, or ordinary computer. Anyone who can read it may be able to restore the wallet. Ledger’s security guidance
  3. Use official software and firmware channels. Follow the instructions for your particular model. Trezor’s security overview describes official firmware signing; do not rely on unofficial downloads or instructions. Trezor’s security overview
  4. Protect the device and use its PIN. Keep it physically secure. A PIN helps restrict access, but protections such as hardware-enforced rate limiting differ between models. Trezor’s security overview
  5. Verify every transaction on the device. Check the recipient address and transaction details on the wallet screen before approving. Do not sign a transaction that differs from your intent. The EthClipper study abstract
  6. Act promptly if the phrase may have been exposed. Treat the wallet as compromised and move assets to a newly generated wallet using a clean, trusted setup. A hardware device cannot make a disclosed recovery phrase secret again.

What a metal backup can and cannot do

A metal recovery-phrase backup can help protect a physical backup from some kinds of damage. It does not stop someone from reading the phrase, and it does nothing to prevent malicious transactions, phishing, or attacks on the device. Ledger’s security-model material discusses metal backup options; treat them as a durability measure, not a theft-prevention measure. Ledger’s security model

Why there is no single answer for every hardware wallet

Security depends on the specific device and its current firmware, as well as the recovery and transaction workflows it uses. When evaluating a particular model, check how it protects keys and PIN verification, how firmware authenticity is handled, whether recovery words are entered on the device or a connected computer, how passphrases work, and how clearly transaction details appear on the device screen. Vendor descriptions are useful for understanding a product’s stated design, but they are not a guarantee that it cannot be compromised.

The available sources do not establish a population-wide probability that a hardware wallet will be hacked. A disclosed attack or a malware study demonstrates a possible route, not how likely it is to affect an individual owner.
