Yes—a gun can fire in the vacuum of space because its cartridge carries the materials needed to burn its propellant; it does not need oxygen from the surrounding air. What happens next is less like a shot on Earth: the shooter recoils, and the bullet continues moving under the influence of gravity and other forces rather than slowing from ordinary atmospheric drag.

Why can a gun fire without air?

A conventional cartridge contains propellant and an oxidizer, so the reaction that launches its projectile does not depend on drawing oxygen from the atmosphere. Space.com explains this principle in its account of firing a gun in space: Space.com’s explanation of guns firing in space.

NASA provides a separate demonstration of the underlying principle with its two-stage light-gas guns. In these research launchers, conventional smokeless gunpowder drives a piston; the piston compresses hydrogen, which then expands rapidly to propel a test projectile into a target chamber with its air removed. NASA says the first stage uses conventional smokeless gunpowder and works on the same principle as firing a bullet from a gun. The apparatus demonstrates projectile propulsion into a vacuum-simulating chamber, but it is not a handheld firearm tested in outer space. NASA White Sands Test Facility’s impact-dynamics research

What would happen if you shot a gun in space?

The shooter would recoil

When the bullet and propellant gases move forward out of the barrel, the firearm and shooter experience momentum in the opposite direction. A freely floating person would therefore recoil. How much their velocity changed would depend on the firearm, ammunition, shooter’s mass, and any restraint or contact with a spacecraft; without those details, there is no single meaningful recoil speed.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The projectile would keep moving, but not necessarily in a straight line forever

After leaving the barrel, a projectile would not encounter the ordinary atmospheric drag that slows bullets in air. It would continue along its trajectory, while gravity and other forces could alter that path. Its eventual motion depends on its starting velocity and surroundings, so “it travels forever in a straight line” is not a safe description.

The visible smoke would behave differently

Space.com quotes astronomer Peter Schultz, who studies impact craters, describing the expected smoke as “an expanding sphere of smoke from the tip of the barrel.” That is Schultz’s explanation of how the smoke would disperse, not a report of a NASA test firing a conventional gun in space. Does NASA’s research equipment prove an ordinary gun works in space?

No. NASA’s light-gas guns support the physical principle that a propellant can launch a projectile into an evacuated chamber. Their two-stage propulsion systems are built for hypervelocity impact research, not personal use. The demonstration does not establish that every pistol or rifle would function reliably in outer space; performance would depend on a firearm’s design and operating conditions. The available NASA descriptions do not report a conventional handheld firearm being fired in outer space.

So, would a gun fire in the vacuum of space?

Yes, the basic firing reaction can work without surrounding air because the cartridge supplies what it needs. A shot would also produce recoil, and the projectile would continue moving subject to gravity and other forces. NASA’s vacuum-chamber research supports that principle, but it is not proof that a particular handheld firearm has been tested or shown reliable in space.
