Yes— a GTX 1060 is a reasonable choice for Fortnite at lower or ordinary settings. Epic’s published recommended GPU is a GTX 960, a lower model tier than the GTX 1060. That comparison supports basic suitability, but it does not guarantee a particular frame rate or high-refresh competitive performance.
What Epic’s requirements say
| Fortnite requirement tier | GPU | Other listed requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 | Epic cautions that meeting only the minimum may not allow the highest settings. |
| Recommended | Nvidia GTX 960, AMD R9 280, or equivalent DX11 GPU | 2 GB VRAM and 16 GB RAM. |
| Epic quality preset | Nvidia RTX 3070, AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, or equivalent | 8 GB VRAM or higher. |
These are Epic’s published PC specifications, not measured frame rates. The GTX 1060 is above the recommended GTX 960 model tier, but Epic’s quality-preset GPU is in a much newer class. That makes ordinary settings a more defensible expectation than Epic-quality visuals. See Epic’s Fortnite system requirements.
What performance to expect—and what cannot be promised
A GTX 1060 can be a plausible Fortnite card, especially if you are willing to lower visual settings. The requirements comparison alone cannot predict how smooth it will feel on your particular PC: the processor, memory, resolution, rendering mode, drivers, game updates, and the card’s VRAM capacity all affect performance.
No controlled benchmark for a current Fortnite release establishes a reliable GTX 1060 frame-rate figure here. A historical test of a GTX 1060 6 GB exists, but it is not a current-release result and should not be treated as a promise for today’s game. For this reason, there is no defensible FPS estimate to give from the published requirements.

How to make Fortnite smoother on a GTX 1060
Try Performance Mode
Epic labels this option “Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity.” It reduces visual quality in exchange for the potential of a smoother frame rate and lower memory use, making it a sensible setting to try when smoothness matters more than visual detail. Epic describes it as an option for less powerful hardware, not as a guaranteed uplift for every GTX 1060 system. Epic’s Performance Mode instructions.
Check memory and storage if the game hitches
Epic lists 16 GB of RAM as recommended. For older machines, its support guidance also suggests an SSD or at least 6 GB of RAM to help reduce hitches and stutters. Those are general suggestions—not proof that changing storage or memory will raise a GTX 1060’s frame rate. Epic’s performance troubleshooting guidance.

GTX 1060 3 GB vs. 6 GB
The GTX 1060 comes in 3 GB and 6 GB versions. The VRAM amount matters when choosing settings and can affect how well a system handles graphics workloads, but the available specifications do not establish a current Fortnite performance difference or frame-rate result between these variants. Check which version you own or are considering rather than assuming every GTX 1060 has 6 GB.

- Likely a reasonable fit: You want to play at lower or ordinary settings and accept that smoothness depends on the rest of your PC.
- Less certain: You need a specific high-refresh frame rate. The requirements do not guarantee one, and no current controlled GTX 1060 result is established here.
- Not the right basis for a promise: You expect Epic-quality visuals. Epic’s listed GPU for that preset is an RTX 3070 or equivalent, substantially newer than the GTX 1060.
Epic’s 2022 Unreal Engine 5.1 announcement said Nanite’s minimum Nvidia GPU was an RTX 2080 or newer. That statement concerns the named advanced feature, not whether Fortnite runs at all on a GTX 1060; it is historical feature documentation rather than a general compatibility rule. Before installing or buying a GTX 1060
For its reference GTX 1060 6 GB Founders Edition, Nvidia specifies a minimum 400 W power supply and one 6-pin PCIe supplementary power connector. Check the exact card manufacturer’s requirements before installation or purchase, because board versions can differ. The reference-card specification is not a guarantee that every GTX 1060 has the same power or connector requirements. Nvidia’s GTX 1060 user guide.
Fortnite requirements can help establish whether a card is in the right general class, but they do not establish current used-card prices, availability, condition, or value against other GPUs. Evaluate those separately if you are shopping.
