Yes, a Galaxy SmartTag2 can be misused in an attempt to monitor a person, but it is designed as an item finder, not a people-tracking device. Samsung says SmartThings Find location data is shared only with the user’s permission and people they designate, and that data is encrypted and protected by Samsung Knox. Samsung also provides Unknown tag alerts and manual searches for certain unfamiliar SmartTags.

Those safeguards are useful but not absolute. Unknown tag detection must be enabled, it covers tags compatible with SmartThings Find rather than every tracker, and Samsung has not published evidence proving that an alert will appear in every real-world situation. A missing alert therefore does not prove that nobody is monitoring you.

What a Galaxy SmartTag2 is—and why consent matters

Galaxy SmartTag2 is a small Bluetooth locator intended to help you find keys, bags, luggage, pets’ equipment, or other belongings. A nearby compatible Galaxy phone can detect the tag over Bluetooth. When the tag is outside that direct range, Samsung’s Galaxy Find Network can report its location when opted-in Galaxy devices come near it.

That same infrastructure creates a misuse risk if somebody hides a tag in another person’s belongings or vehicle. Samsung’s SmartTag2 product team explicitly acknowledges the problem: “The main goal of the Galaxy SmartTag2 is to assist users in locating their cherished belongings. However, it is crucial to recognize that location-tracking services can be exploited.” The product’s intended purpose does not make unauthorized tracking acceptable.

Samsung Australia’s services terms state: “SAMSUNG FIND SHOULD NOT BE USED TO SECRETLY TRACK SOMEONE ELSE’S LOCATION.” The statement is Samsung’s service rule, not a universal legal ruling. Whether secretly placing or using a tracker is illegal depends on the facts and the law where you live.

What Samsung says about permission and privacy

Location sharing is permission-based

Samsung’s SmartTag2 announcement says location is made available with the user’s permission. A Samsung product planner, Dalwon Kim, described the policy this way: “Galaxy SmartTag2 location data cannot be accessed without the user’s consent, and all user data is encrypted and safeguarded by Samsung Knox. Furthermore, location data is shared only with individuals designated by the user.” These are Samsung’s descriptions of its product and service protections, not the result of an independent security audit.

Sharing can be stopped

Samsung’s Australia terms say users can stop sharing location information at any time. They also say that a person is notified when someone checks their location information through Samsung Find. That notification rule concerns Samsung Find’s location-sharing service; it should not be interpreted as a promise that every possible physical misuse of a SmartTag2 will be exposed immediately.

Identifiers are designed to change

In a 2022 SmartThings Find announcement, Samsung said device identifiers change every 15 minutes and are stored anonymously. This is a privacy design claim from Samsung, not proof that a determined abuser, compromised account, or hidden physical tag cannot create harm.

Will your phone alert you about an unknown SmartTag?

It can, if you turn on Unknown tag alerts and the unfamiliar device is a tag compatible with SmartThings Find. Samsung says the feature is opt-in: notifications about unregistered Galaxy SmartTags do not arrive until the user activates the setting. Samsung’s product-planner interview says non-Galaxy users can access Unknown tag alerts in SmartThings settings as well.

Detection is limited to tags compatible with SmartThings Find. Samsung does not describe the feature as a universal detector for every Bluetooth tracker or every tracking technology. The company also has not published independent testing that establishes reliable detection in every building, vehicle, country, phone configuration, or movement pattern. A failure to receive an alert is therefore not evidence that no tracker is present.

How to turn on Unknown tag alerts

Samsung Gulf support, updated June 19, 2025, gives this route. App labels can change with updates or differ by region, so look for equivalent wording if your screen is different.

  1. Open the SmartThings app.
  2. Tap Life.
  3. Tap Find.
  4. Open Settings.
  5. Choose Unknown tag detection.
  6. Turn on Unknown tag alerts.

After activation, keep the phone’s software and SmartThings app current and allow the notifications required by your operating system. Enabling the setting improves your chance of receiving a warning; it does not create a guarantee of detection.

How to search manually for an unfamiliar tag

You do not have to wait for a notification. Samsung says Android and iOS users can manually search for unknown tags in SmartThings. The support route is:

  1. Open SmartThings and go to Life > Find.
  2. Select Search for unknown tags near you.
  3. Tap Start.

Samsung’s earlier SmartThings Find announcement describes a signal-strength gauge that can help estimate proximity as you move. A stronger signal generally suggests that you are closer, but walls, drawers, a car body, furniture, and other obstructions can affect readings. Treat the scan as a way to narrow the search, not as a forensic guarantee that a device has been found or ruled out.

Finding your own item versus detecting someone else’s tag

Function What you do Required setup Main limits
Find your tagged property Use SmartThings Find to locate a SmartTag2 assigned to you. Compatible Galaxy hardware, a Samsung account, SmartThings Find opt-in, and the SmartThings app. Bluetooth range and physical obstacles affect accuracy; out-of-range location depends on opted-in Galaxy devices near the tag.
Detect an unfamiliar tag Enable Unknown tag alerts or run Search for unknown tags near you. The feature must be activated; manual search is available on Android and iOS according to Samsung. Detection is limited to tags compatible with SmartThings Find, and Samsung provides no universal warning guarantee.

Do not treat a nearby signal, a network sighting, or the absence of a warning as continuous, precise tracking of a person. SmartTag2 reports a tag’s location when the technical conditions allow it; it is not a dedicated live human-location system.

Range, network behavior, and physical limitations

Bluetooth range

Samsung lists Bluetooth range of up to 120 meters in unobstructed conditions. “Up to” describes a best-case manufacturer figure, not a distance you should expect through walls or inside a vehicle. Samsung cautions that obstacles can reduce both range and accuracy.

Out-of-range finding

When a tag is beyond your phone’s Bluetooth range, the Galaxy Find Network can help if opted-in Galaxy users pass within range of the tag. The result depends on participating devices being nearby and able to communicate. It does not mean that a tag reports a continuous position or that every location will be detected.

Ultra-wideband direction finding

Compass View, Samsung’s UWB-assisted locating feature, requires a compatible UWB-enabled Galaxy phone. It is an aid for finding a tag you own; it does not expand Unknown tag alerts to unsupported trackers.

SmartTag2 specifications relevant to safety

Specification Samsung-stated figure or condition Safety significance
Battery Replaceable CR2032 coin cell. A hidden tag can continue operating until its battery is depleted or removed; inspect suspicious belongings rather than relying only on battery timing.
Expected battery life Up to 500 days in non-Power Saving Mode, based on typical use. Actual duration varies with use and conditions; “up to” is not a guaranteed operating period.
Power Saving Mode Up to 700 days; Samsung says the mode limits the device to basic Bluetooth finding functions. Longer battery estimates come with reduced functionality.
Water and dust resistance IP67; tested in fresh water up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. Resistance is not permanent. Samsung does not advise beach, pool, or soapy-water use, so water resistance should not be treated as concealment-proof durability.
Network privacy design Samsung said device IDs change every 15 minutes and are stored anonymously. This is a company-stated privacy measure, not an independent assessment of all tracking risks.

What to do if you suspect a SmartTag is following you

1. Check the setting and run a scan

Confirm that Unknown tag alerts are enabled, then run the manual search. Move slowly through rooms, bags, the vehicle cabin, and storage areas while watching the signal-strength indicator. Remove or open containers where a signal becomes stronger.

2. Look for the physical tag

Inspect coat pockets, backpacks, luggage linings, glove compartments, under seats, and attached accessories. SmartTag2 is small enough to be concealed, and a scan result is more useful when paired with a physical inspection.

3. Preserve information safely

If the app identifies an unfamiliar tag, save screenshots of the alert, date, approximate location, and any device details shown. Do not confront a person you suspect if doing so could increase danger. Consider asking a trusted person to help with the search.

4. Get local help when risk is immediate

If you fear stalking, coercive control, or physical harm, contact local emergency services or a specialist support organization. A tag alert is a safety signal, not a substitute for an assessment by law enforcement, an advocate, or a qualified security professional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Decide what to do with the tag

Do not destroy evidence before documenting it if you may report the incident. If you are safe and need to stop the tag from transmitting, follow local advice about removing its CR2032 battery or placing it in a radio-blocking container. Because procedures and legal expectations vary, seek local guidance before altering a suspected device.

Can Samsung SmartTag2 legally track a person?

There is no single worldwide answer. Samsung’s Australia terms expressly discourage secretly tracking someone else and say a person is notified when their location is checked through Samsung Find. Those provisions describe Samsung’s service policy. They do not determine the criminal, civil, family-law, or workplace-law rules in another country or state.

Consent can also depend on relationship and context. Tracking a child’s property, a company asset, or a jointly owned vehicle may involve different rules from placing a tag in another adult’s bag without permission. If a dispute could lead to court or police action, obtain advice from a lawyer or local victim-support service rather than assuming that Samsung’s terms answer the legal question.

Requirements and ownership considerations

Samsung’s current US product listing says core SmartTag2 tracking requires compatible Galaxy hardware, a Samsung account, and opt-in to SmartThings Find. Samsung’s pages have shown differing compatibility wording across regions and over time, so check the current support and product pages for your phone model and operating system. UWB Compass View has the additional compatible-phone requirement described above.

SmartTag2 uses a replaceable CR2032 battery. Samsung also lists silicone and rugged cases as separate accessories. Prices and availability can change by market; buying a SmartTag2 is not a solution for someone who fears being tracked, because the safety issue concerns the tag, account, and detection ecosystem rather than ownership of a particular unit.

What the safeguards do—and do not—promise

  • They do: provide opt-in alerts and manual searches for compatible unknown SmartTags; support permission-based sharing; offer Samsung-stated encryption, Knox protection, changing device IDs, and notifications for Samsung Find location checks.
  • They do not: identify every tracker brand, guarantee an alert in every environment, prove that a person cannot be tracked, or establish the law in your jurisdiction.
  • They require action: Unknown tag alerts must be enabled, and manual scans must be initiated in the app.
  • They depend on conditions: Bluetooth range, obstacles, participating Galaxy devices, account settings, phone compatibility, software version, and regional app availability all affect what you can see.

Bottom line

Galaxy SmartTag2 is built to locate belongings, yet unauthorized placement can create a real tracking risk. Samsung’s consent rules, encryption claims, Knox safeguards, Unknown tag alerts, and manual-search tools are meaningful protections. Enable the alerts, scan manually when concerned, inspect your belongings, document anything suspicious, and seek local help if the situation feels unsafe. Keep the limits in view: detection covers compatible SmartThings Find tags only, and neither a warning nor its absence is a guarantee about every tracking device or every circumstance.
