A tightly compressed ball of aluminum foil in a washing machine for one cycle is unlikely to pose a significant risk, according to Michelle Feng, a Hisense marketing manager. But she does not recommend making it a routine laundry habit—and the claimed static-reduction benefit has not been demonstrated.
Is it safe to put aluminum foil in a washing machine?
For a single cycle, Feng’s assessment is that a tightly compressed foil ball is “unlikely to pose a significant risk.” That is a qualified judgment, not a guarantee for every washer or fabric. She added: “Given the lack of a demonstrated benefit, we wouldn’t recommend the hack.” These comments were reported by Tom’s Guide on August 19, 2026.
The practical concern is that foil can break apart. Loose pieces could reach a filter or drainage system, and sharp edges may catch delicate fabric. The cited expert comments do not assess every washer model, so follow your machine’s manual if it addresses foreign objects or laundry accessories.
Does a foil ball reduce laundry static?
The trend is presented as a way to reduce static cling, but the benefit is not established. The rationale fits a dry tumble dryer better than a washer: clothes spend much of a wash cycle immersed in water, while static is more relevant during drying and wearing. The reported discussion offers no controlled test or measured result showing that a foil ball reduces static in either setting.

What can you try instead for static cling?
Manufacturer guidance points to several practical approaches, but does not rank them or establish that one works better than another.
- Sort fabrics: Separate items by material when laundering, as Maytag’s static-reduction guidance and Whirlpool’s guidance suggest.
- Air-dry clothes: Maytag and Whirlpool include air drying among their suggestions for addressing static.
- Avoid oversized loads: Whirlpool recommends avoiding loads that are too large.
- Consider dryer balls for drying: Whirlpool mentions dryer balls as a dryer-oriented option. Its guidance does not establish that they outperform other approaches.
- Discharge existing static on a garment: Maytag suggests rubbing metal foil or a hanger along the garment to try to discharge static. This is a garment-level suggestion, not a reason to put foil in the washer.
What should you do before trying a laundry hack?
Check the care labels on your clothes and the instructions for your specific washer. If your manual does not address foil, the expert’s general assessment still does not amount to model-specific approval. Since a static benefit has not been demonstrated, there is little reason to accept the possible inconvenience of loose foil or snagged fabric.
