Sometimes—but not reliably enough to call it a cure. A factory reset removes apps, accounts, settings and locally stored data from the phone, so it may remove stalkerware installed as an app. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes this as something that “may remove” stalkerware, while Apple says a factory restore is an option when a device may have been tampered with.
A reset cannot undo information already copied to somebody else’s account or server. It also will not fix monitoring caused by location sharing, account access or another device. If an abusive person might notice the change or retaliate, protect your safety and preserve evidence before changing the phone.
What a factory reset can—and cannot—remove
What it may remove
A factory reset erases the phone’s user data and settings. That normally includes installed applications, their local data, device accounts and configuration changes. If the suspected spyware is a stalkerware application installed on the handset, wiping the device can remove that installation.

Apple’s personal-safety guidance says restoring a device to factory settings is an option when someone may have physically accessed it, bypassed built-in protections and installed malicious software. The FTC similarly lists a reset among steps that may remove stalkerware. Neither source promises that every infection will be eliminated.

What it does not prove or repair
- It is not a guarantee. A reset may fail to address a compromise outside ordinary user-installed apps, and no official source supplies a success rate.
- It does not erase information already taken. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center’s 2014 advisory explains that data copied from a phone and stored on a vendor’s website remains there after the phone is reset. That older advisory is useful for this limitation, not as current reset instructions.
- It does not revoke access elsewhere. Someone who knows an email, cloud or social-account password may continue monitoring through that account after the handset is clean.
- It does not automatically disable sharing. Location sharing, family groups, shared albums and app permissions can expose information without a spyware app.
- It destroys local content. Photos, messages, downloaded files, authenticator data and other material that exists only on the phone can be lost.
For that reason, “Will a factory reset get rid of spyware?” has a conditional answer: it can remove some software from the device, but it cannot establish that every monitoring route is closed.
Put safety and evidence before the reset
Removing stalkerware can alert the person who installed it. The FTC warns that making a call, researching options or having a conversation near a monitored phone could “tip off your abuser.” A sudden reset, a new password or a disabled location feed may also be noticed.
If an abusive person could retaliate
- Use a different device. Contact a trusted advocate, domestic-violence service or emergency service from a phone or computer the other person cannot access. Do not assume the suspected handset is private enough for planning.
- Make a safety plan. An advocate can help decide whether to reset, replace the phone, preserve evidence or leave the device unchanged temporarily.
- Preserve evidence deliberately. If messages, call logs, account alerts or photographs may matter, save them in a safe location that does not expose you or overwrite useful information. Ask an advocate how to document the situation without increasing risk.
- Plan for account recovery. Before wiping the phone, make sure you can reach your email, password manager, two-factor authentication method and important contacts without relying on data stored only on that handset.
If there is immediate danger, prioritize physical safety and local emergency support over troubleshooting. A technically clean phone is not worth creating a predictable safety risk.
Identify the monitoring route before choosing a remedy
Unwanted tracking is not always spyware installed as an app. Start by separating three possibilities: a malicious application or device tampering, a sharing or permission setting, and access to an online account.

| Possible source | Clues to consider | Most relevant first action |
|---|---|---|
| Malicious app or tampering | Someone had physical access; unfamiliar apps or security changes appeared; Apple’s guidance specifically covers suspected tampering. | Safety planning, evidence preservation and—if appropriate—a carefully planned factory restore. |
| Sharing or permissions | A person can see your location, photos or activity through a family group, shared album or app access you did not realize was enabled. | Review sharing and access controls. On Apple devices, use Safety Check’s Manage Sharing & Access where available. |
| Compromised account | Alerts show sign-ins from another device, or the other person knows a cloud, email or social-account password. | Change credentials from a trusted device, enable two-factor authentication and review active sessions and recovery methods. |
| Information already copied | The other person already possesses messages, images, location history or recordings. | Assume a reset cannot retract it; concentrate on account security, safety planning and evidence handling. |
These causes can overlap. A clean handset can still leak data through a compromised account, and changing a password will not remove an app that remains on the phone.
What to do if you decide to reset
1. Decide what data must be retained
A reset removes the device’s content and settings. List anything you genuinely need—photos, contacts, documents, medical information, authentication codes or evidence—and decide where it can be stored safely. Do not make a complete backup automatically if the backup could expose evidence or reproduce the suspected software.
Apple says a factory restore removes data and apps. Google’s Android Help likewise says a factory reset deletes data from the phone. The correct preservation method depends on your safety situation; an advocate or qualified investigator may recommend leaving the original device untouched.
2. Confirm you can access essential accounts
Know the username and password for the Google Account or Apple Account associated with the device, and make sure you can receive any verification code. Google specifically tells Android users to know a Google Account associated with the phone before resetting. If the only verification method is an authenticator app on the phone, arrange a safe alternative first.

3. Use the platform’s current restore procedure
On an iPhone or iPad, Apple’s current support instructions call this a restore to factory settings. Follow the instructions for the exact model and operating-system version; the procedure is a device restore, not merely a restart.
On Android, Google’s help describes a factory reset that removes data from the phone. Menu names differ by manufacturer and software version, so use the current instructions for the exact handset rather than assuming one universal path. Settings may contain a section such as System, General management or Reset options, but the labels and order vary. If the normal Settings app is unavailable, consult the manufacturer’s official recovery instructions from another device.
4. Do not restore the suspected full backup
This is the step most likely to defeat the purpose of the reset. Apple states: “Restoring from a backup may reinstall the malicious software you’re trying to remove.” The FTC gives the same practical warning. Set the phone up as new instead of restoring the old phone’s complete image or application set.

Secure the phone and accounts after a clean setup
Change credentials from a trusted device
Change the passwords for your primary email, Apple or Google account, messaging services, social networks, cloud storage and mobile-carrier account. Use unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication where offered. The FTC recommends strong, changed passwords and two-factor authentication for relevant accounts.
Review signed-in devices, active sessions, recovery email addresses and phone numbers. Remove devices or sessions you do not recognize. If an abusive person controls a shared plan or knows the carrier-account password, address that access separately with the carrier from a safe channel.
Review sharing and permissions
Check location-sharing memberships, family groups, shared calendars, photo albums and emergency-contact settings. On Apple devices, Safety Check’s Manage Sharing & Access is intended to help review who and what can access information. Android menus and controls vary by manufacturer; review Google Account sharing and each app’s permissions using the current device guidance.

Keep the operating system and apps current
Install available security updates and update apps from the official store. Avoid sideloading applications or restoring unverified installation files. Updates reduce known vulnerabilities, but they do not compensate for a compromised account or unsafe sharing arrangement.
When replacing the phone may be safer
The FTC says getting a new phone may be the safest option in some situations. Replacement is a safety choice, not a universal technical requirement, and the guidance does not identify a particular model.
Consider another device when the existing phone cannot be safely reset, someone else controls its management or carrier account, you cannot preserve evidence without exposing yourself, or you need a device the other person has never physically accessed. Obtain and set up the replacement through a safe process. Do not automatically copy the old phone’s complete backup onto it, and do not assume a new handset fixes passwords, account sessions or location sharing that remain compromised.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNo official source reviewed here provides comparative success rates for resetting versus replacing a phone. The right choice depends on the type of access, the person who may be monitoring you and your safety circumstances.
Common mistakes that make a reset ineffective
- Restoring the entire old backup. This can reinstall the software you intended to remove.
- Resetting before preserving critical evidence. The wipe can destroy local records that an advocate, investigator or court may need.
- Using the monitored phone to plan the reset. Research, calls and conversations can reveal what you intend to do.
- Changing only the screen passcode. A stronger unlock code does not remove account access or sharing permissions.
- Assuming unfamiliar tracking always means an app. A shared account, family setting or location service may be responsible.
- Believing a reset retracts old data. Information already uploaded or copied remains outside the device.
- Installing every app at once. Reinstalling indiscriminately makes it harder to identify an unwanted app or permission.
A practical decision sequence
- Ask whether changing the phone could alert someone or create danger.
- If yes, use another device and seek safety advice before touching the handset.
- Determine whether the concern points to an app, physical tampering, sharing settings or account access.
- Preserve essential information and evidence in a way that does not recreate the risk.
- If a reset is appropriate, restore the device and configure it as new.
- Reinstall only necessary apps from the official store.
- Change account passwords, enable two-factor authentication and remove unknown sessions.
- Review location sharing, family groups and app permissions separately.
- Choose a new phone only when the safety or access situation makes it the better option.
The central distinction is between cleaning the handset and ending surveillance. A factory reset addresses only the first, and only when the monitoring software is actually on the phone.
