A diamond-coated wire made from carbon-nanotube yarn was proposed as a way to cut silicon ingots with a narrower kerf—the groove removed by sawing—and preserve more silicon for wafers. But the 2013 report described a promising design and significant engineering hurdles, not a production-ready saw or a demonstrated reduction in waste.
How could a thinner saw wire reduce silicon waste?
Silicon ingots are sliced into thin wafers used in photovoltaic cells and semiconductor devices. Every cut removes a strip of material, called kerf. A narrower cut could leave more silicon available for wafers, potentially improving material yield and lowering costs.
The proposal reported by Chemistry World on 8 August 2013 used carbon-nanotube (CNT) yarn as the wire and deposited diamond particles as the abrasive. It was distinct from both conventional steel-wire sawing and established diamond-coated steel wire. Diamond abrasive itself was not the novel part; the proposed change was the wire substrate.
What was different about the CNT-yarn design?
In conventional approaches, steel wire can be used with a silicon-carbide slurry, or diamond abrasive can be attached to steel wire. The CNT proposal instead paired a carbon-nanotube yarn wire with deposited diamond. The concept aimed to combine a very thin wire with an abrasive surface, but the available sources provide no head-to-head measurements against existing methods.

The coating process posed a particular problem: the environment needed to grow diamond could also etch the non-diamond carbon in the nanotube yarn. The 2013 account described an oxide buffer layer found during experiments to protect the CNT substrate while diamond grew. As materials scientist Nick Glumac of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, put it: “You need a buffer layer to protect the non-diamond substrates.”
What engineering hurdles remained?
A workable concept would need to survive manufacturing and repeated use, not just demonstrate that diamond could be deposited on a protected CNT substrate. The 2013 report identified several unresolved challenges:

- Continuous yarn production: CNT yarn would have to be made at scale, consistently and efficiently.
- Controlled diamond deposition: The coating process would need to grow diamond without damaging the nanotube substrate.
- Coating adhesion and wire performance: The abrasive would need to remain attached while the wire retained suitable mechanical strength and continuity.
- Production-scale reliability: The wire would need to perform dependably under real wafer-sawing conditions.
Stephen Hawkins, identified in the report as a CSIRO representative, said deployment would require “demonstration of substantially improved performance” and pointed to the technical challenges of scaling and simplifying CNT-yarn and diamond-coating production. The report did not supply production-trial results.
How much silicon is lost when ingots are cut?
A 2015 WISE / Government of India report, Addressing the Challenges of RE Manufacturing in India: Horizon 2032, gave a contextual estimate that roughly 50% of silicon is wasted while sawing ingot into wafers. That figure is the report’s general manufacturing estimate; it is not a measurement of the CNT-yarn saw, nor an estimate of how much the proposal could save.

Did the nano-saw prove it could slash waste?
No demonstrated kerf width, wafer-yield improvement, cost reduction, or production-scale trial for the CNT-yarn design is established by the cited reporting. Nor do the sources establish that it was commercialized or adopted in wafer production. Assessing it against existing sawing methods would require comparable data on kerf, cut quality, subsurface damage, wire strength, abrasive adhesion, speed, reliability, consumables, and compatibility with installed equipment.
The defensible conclusion is narrower than the headline promise: the 2013 work described an inventive materials-engineering approach to reducing kerf loss, while leaving manufacturing scale-up and practical performance to be demonstrated.
