Yes—if another suitable power source is connected. A desktop normally runs from its AC cable and internal power supply without a main battery. Some laptops can run from a compatible AC adapter with the removable main battery taken out, but that depends on the model. A small CMOS/RTC battery is different: it helps preserve the clock and firmware settings, rather than serving as the computer’s main operating-power source.
Which battery do you mean?
“Battery” can refer to the laptop’s rechargeable main battery, a desktop’s small CMOS/RTC battery, or the only power source available to the computer. The answer changes depending on which one is missing.
- Laptop main battery: Stores power for use away from an outlet. A laptop may be able to run from an AC adapter alone, depending on its design.
- Desktop CMOS/RTC battery: Helps preserve the system clock and firmware settings. It is separate from the desktop’s operating-power supply.
- No external power: A computer without a working battery or a connected, suitable power source cannot be expected to start.
Can a laptop run without its main battery?
Some laptops with a removable main battery can be powered by an AC adapter alone. Dell’s guidance for that specific case is: “If your laptop has a removable battery, remove it, and try to power on the laptop using only the AC adapter or charger.” That is a model-dependent troubleshooting step, not a guarantee for every laptop. Check the laptop’s owner’s guide or service manual before trying this. Use the manufacturer-provided or approved adapter specified for the exact model. Do not open a sealed laptop to remove an internal battery simply to test whether it will start.

A deeply discharged battery, a faulty adapter or charging port, or another hardware problem can also affect startup. If the model’s instructions do not support adapter-only operation, follow those instructions rather than assuming the laptop should work without its battery.
Can a desktop start without its CMOS/RTC battery?
Usually, a desktop gets its operating power from the wall through its AC cable and power supply unit (PSU). The CMOS/RTC battery has a different job: preserving the clock and firmware configuration when the computer is off. Dell describes how a CMOS reset can return date, time and boot-order settings to defaults while leaving files and Windows unaffected in its RTC reset guidance.

A depleted CMOS/RTC battery may lead to a clock or date warning, a firmware setup message, or lost custom BIOS settings. Those symptoms do not by themselves show that the computer needs the CMOS/RTC battery to provide its normal operating power. If the desktop has no lights or fans, check its AC connection and power supply rather than treating the CMOS battery as the likely power source.
What symptoms should you check first?
“Won’t boot” can describe different stages. Identify what the computer actually does before changing parts:

- No lights, fans or other signs of power: Check the outlet, power strip, AC cable and, for a laptop, adapter connection. A faulty adapter, cable, charging port, PSU, motherboard or other hardware may be involved.
- Power indicators appear, but there is no display: The machine may be receiving power without reaching a visible startup screen. This is not the same symptom as no power at all.
- A clock/date or CMOS warning appears, or firmware settings have reset: Check whether the model has a CMOS/RTC battery and follow its service instructions. The issue concerns clock or firmware settings, not necessarily the main power source.
- The computer reaches firmware but not the operating system: This is a boot-stage problem, distinct from a computer that does not power on. Dell separates no-power troubleshooting from cases where a system powers on but does not boot in its support guidance.
How to troubleshoot safely
- Note the exact symptom. Record whether there are no lights or fans, power indicators without a display, a firmware warning, or an operating-system startup failure.
- Check the external power path. Test the outlet, power strip, cable and adapter connections. For a laptop, confirm that the adapter is approved for the model.
- Try adapter-only operation only when the laptop’s manual permits it. If the main battery is designed to be removable, use the model’s instructions; do not disassemble a sealed laptop for this test.
- Investigate clock or firmware warnings separately. Consult the computer’s model-specific service information to determine whether it has a CMOS/RTC battery and how it can be replaced. HP likewise directs users to model-specific instructions in its CMOS battery replacement guidance.
- Get model-specific support if it still will not power on. An adapter, charging port, cable, PSU, motherboard or another component may be at fault; a CMOS/RTC battery replacement is not a general fix for a no-power condition.
Why the computer’s model matters
Laptop designs vary: the main battery may be internal, adapter-only operation may not be supported, and some systems may not have a separate CMOS coin cell. Even when a battery is replaceable, the required component and procedure depend on the model. Use the owner’s guide or service manual rather than applying a procedure from another computer. Manufacturer troubleshooting establishes a path for specific designs, not a universal promise that every laptop will work indefinitely without its main battery.
