Yes. A bouncing logo is safer than a fixed logo because it spreads bright pixels across more of the panel, but it does not make an OLED immune to burn-in. OLED burn-in is permanent, cumulative uneven pixel wear; a logo that repeatedly appears can eventually wear some pixels more than others. LCD panels are much less prone to permanent burn-in, although certain LCDs can show temporary image retention after a static image remains for many hours.
For an OLED TV or monitor, treat a moving logo as partial mitigation, not protection. Use a short display-off timeout, moderate brightness, varied content, and the panel’s built-in pixel-shift, logo-dimming, and refresh functions. On an LCD, an automatic screen-off setting is still sensible because model-specific retention is possible.
What “burn-in” means on OLED and LCD screens
OLED burn-in is cumulative, uneven pixel wear
Every OLED subpixel produces its own light. With use, those organic light-emitting materials gradually lose output. If one area repeatedly displays a bright logo while the rest of the screen shows varied content, the logo area can age faster. Later, that area may look darker, tinted, or shaped like the old logo even when the picture changes. This permanent difference is commonly called burn-in, although manufacturers may describe it as permanent image retention or differential aging.
The process is cumulative rather than triggered by one brief session. A logo that moves changes which pixels receive the extra load, reducing concentration of wear at any single location. However, the same logo can still expose thousands of pixels over and over, especially when it follows a predictable path or pauses at the edges. High brightness, high contrast, long operating hours, and heat accelerate the uneven workload.

LCD retention is usually temporary and model-specific
LCD pixels do not emit their own light in the same way. A static image can nevertheless leave a temporary afterimage because the liquid-crystal layer and its driving electronics remain in one state for a long time. The mark often fades after the display shows changing content or is turned off. Permanent OLED-style burn-in is uncommon on LCD, but it should not be treated as impossible for every model.
Dell Technologies advises owners of the Latitude 7320 and 7350 Detachable LCD models not to keep one static screen displayed for more than 12 hours at a time. That is a model-specific precaution, not a universal limit for every LCD monitor or laptop panel. Temperature also matters: Dell identifies high heat as a condition that can make retention more likely.
Does a moving screensaver prevent burn-in?
No. Motion reduces the time any one pixel displays the logo, so it lowers the concentration of wear compared with a fixed logo in one corner. It does not eliminate repeated exposure. If the logo is bright, large, opaque, and shown for many hours every day, the entire path can age differently from the rest of the panel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLong-duration testing illustrates the distinction. In RTINGS’ 2017–2019 OLED burn-in experiment, televisions ran for 20 hours per day, seven days per week, for about two years; the results page was updated in 2020. Static content caused visible burn-in, and even sets with cycled logos eventually showed cumulative effects under that extreme schedule. The experiment used a small sample and was not intended to establish a universal number of hours at which every OLED will burn in. It does show why “moving” and “safe forever” are not equivalent.

A bouncing logo is therefore a risk reduction technique. It is useful when a display must show an unattended status screen, but a display-off timeout is safer because it stops light production altogether.
OLED versus LCD: how the risks compare
| Factor | OLED | LCD |
|---|---|---|
| Typical failure from a repeated logo | Permanent uneven pixel wear can become visible as burn-in. | Usually temporary image retention; permanent burn-in is uncommon but panel-specific exceptions exist. |
| Effect of moving the logo | Spreads the load and lowers concentration, but repeated exposure can still age the logo path. | Reduces the chance of a persistent afterimage compared with a fixed image. |
| Brightness and heat | Higher brightness, contrast, operating hours, and heat increase cumulative wear. | Heat and long static periods can increase retention risk on some models. |
| What happens after content changes | Temporary retention may clear quickly; permanent wear remains visible across other content. | Most retention fades after changing content or powering down. |
| Useful built-in protections | Pixel shift, logo-luminance reduction, screen saver, panel or pixel refresh, and automatic dimming where provided. | Screen saver, automatic display-off, and normal power management; specialized retention controls vary by model. |
How long does image retention last?
Temporary retention is an afterimage that fades. RTINGS reports that it commonly disappears within seconds or minutes when the picture changes. Give the panel time with varied full-screen content or turn it off before deciding that a mark is permanent.
Permanent OLED wear does not disappear when you open another app, change inputs, or play a video. It remains in the same physical screen area and is easiest to see on uniform gray, white, or other flat-color test screens. A camera image or a mark visible only for a few seconds after a channel change is more consistent with temporary retention than established burn-in.

- Set the shortest practical idle timeout. Configure the operating system or TV to turn the panel off or enter standby when nobody is watching. A blank, powered-down panel is safer than any animated logo.
- Enable the built-in screen saver. LG documents a supported TV scenario in which its screen saver starts after approximately two minutes of inactivity. The exact delay and trigger can vary, and some applications override the TV’s idle behavior.
- Turn on pixel shift or screen shift. This moves the whole image by small increments so the same subpixels do not continuously carry the same edges. It reduces concentration but cannot compensate for a logo that is constantly bright across a large area.
- Use logo-luminance or static-content dimming. Some OLED sets detect stationary bright areas and lower their output. Keep the feature enabled unless a specific workflow requires it; disabling it trades short-term brightness consistency for more panel stress.
- Reduce brightness for unattended displays. If a logo must remain visible, lower OLED light or panel brightness and avoid maximum contrast. Brightness reduction does not make repeated exposure harmless, but it reduces the amount of energy delivered to the pixels.
- Allow automatic pixel maintenance to run. LG states that supported OLED TVs automatically run a shorter pixel-cleaning cycle after four cumulative hours and a longer pixel-refresher cycle after 2,000 cumulative hours. These intervals and names are model-dependent. Do not unplug the set immediately after shutdown if it indicates that maintenance is in progress.
- Vary the rest of the screen. Rotate backgrounds, move information panels, hide persistent channel bugs when possible, and avoid leaving the same high-contrast interface open for an entire workday.
- Control heat and ventilation. Keep vents clear and avoid placing the panel in direct sun or against a heat source. Excess heat adds stress to a display already running bright static content.
Using a bouncing logo safely when it is required
Some businesses, studios, reception areas, and home-automation dashboards need an always-visible identifier. If the screen cannot turn off, make the logo as small, dim, and low-contrast as the design allows. Use a path that covers a broad area rather than repeatedly stopping in one corner, and vary the animation timing so the same pixels do not receive identical exposure every cycle.
Schedule periods with no logo at all. For example, a display can show the logo during staffed hours, switch to a blank or dark state during breaks, and power down overnight. A moving logo should supplement those dark periods, not replace them. Keep text and sharp white outlines thin; large saturated areas create more cumulative load.
Reducing retention risk on an LCD
- Use automatic display-off or sleep. Set the computer or monitor to turn off after the shortest idle period that does not interrupt your work.
- Do not leave a static dashboard overnight. Even when permanent burn-in is unlikely, long uninterrupted periods can produce a temporary afterimage.
- Follow the model’s manual. Dell’s more-than-12-hour warning applies specifically to the Latitude 7320 and 7350 Detachable LCD models. Other panels may specify different precautions.
- Keep the panel cool. Improve airflow and avoid hot environments, because Dell identifies elevated temperature as a condition associated with retention on the specified models.
- Clear a temporary afterimage correctly. Turn the display off for a while or show changing full-screen content. Do not press on the panel or use abrasive cleaners; physical pressure can create separate LCD defects.
How to tell whether a mark is temporary
Signs of temporary retention
- The outline is strongest immediately after leaving a static screen.
- It fades within seconds or minutes after varied content appears.
- It disappears after a cool-down or power-off period.
- It is visible only on a particular solid color or test pattern.
Signs of permanent OLED wear
- The same shape remains in the same location across games, video, menus, and input sources.
- It is still visible after the panel has been off and cooled.
- It appears as a persistent darker, brighter, or differently tinted region on uniform colors.
- A panel-maintenance cycle does not remove it.
Do not repeatedly run a long refresher in an attempt to erase a suspected mark. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions; maintenance cycles are designed to balance pixel output, not to reverse all accumulated wear.

What manufacturers say about static images
LG USA describes image retention, commonly called burn-in, as a problem caused by leaving a static image on the screen too long. Sony similarly warns that an OLED screen may retain an image when it is displayed continuously for long periods or when the same image is displayed repeatedly. These statements cover both a fixed logo and a logo that returns to the same display pattern over and over.

The wording matters: neither manufacturer promises that a screen saver prevents burn-in. Their protections are designed to reduce or redistribute stress. Menu labels and timing differ by model, so consult the exact television or monitor manual before changing a maintenance setting.

Movement does not cancel brightness. Lower the logo’s luminance, reduce its size, and add blank periods.
Assuming a two-minute screen saver means two minutes of safety

Calling every afterimage “burn-in”
Wait for the mark to fade and test several inputs. Temporary retention and permanent wear have different remedies.
Applying OLED advice unchanged to every LCD
LCD technology has a different failure pattern. Use the LCD manufacturer’s guidance, especially for models with a stated static-image limit, instead of assuming either zero risk or OLED-level burn-in.
What the evidence can and cannot predict
The RTINGS test demonstrates cumulative effects under an unusually demanding 20-hours-per-day, seven-days-per-week schedule for about two years. It does not predict the exact lifespan of your OLED, because panel generation, subpixel design, firmware protections, brightness, content, temperature, and usage pattern all differ. A household that watches varied content for a few hours each evening is not equivalent to a commercial information screen running bright graphics nearly continuously.

LG’s two-minute screen-saver example and four-hour and 2,000-hour maintenance intervals apply only to supported models and software versions. Treat those figures as documented examples, not universal thresholds.
Bottom line
A bouncing logo is better than a stationary logo, but it cannot guarantee an OLED will avoid burn-in. Permanent OLED wear comes from repeated uneven exposure, and a moving logo can still create that pattern over time. The most effective protection is to turn the panel off when idle, keep unavoidable static graphics dim and small, vary displayed content, and leave the manufacturer’s pixel-shift, logo-dimming, and refresh features enabled. LCDs are far less likely to suffer permanent burn-in, yet temporary retention—and model-specific precautions such as Dell’s 12-hour guidance—make automatic display-off worthwhile there too.
