A 90-second automated vision test can offer a quick look at visual acuity, but the available reporting does not show that it replaces a comprehensive eye examination. The example behind this question is Eyebot: a January 2025 Vision Monday feature described a test that may indicate whether glasses are outdated and can provide access to a doctor-reviewed prescription. Those are reported capabilities, not independently established accuracy or a guarantee that every user receives a prescription.

What does a 90-second vision test measure?

Visual acuity is how clearly a person can see specified letters, symbols, or other visual targets at a particular distance. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration describes digital visual-acuity tests as systems that present visual stimuli and assess a patient’s responses to help evaluate acuity. That category describes an aid to one kind of assessment; it does not mean a kiosk checks every aspect of eye health.

The 90-second duration and possible outputs refer specifically to Eyebot as described in Vision Monday in January 2025. The feature says the service can indicate whether someone’s current glasses may be outdated and describes a route to a doctor-reviewed prescription. It does not report an independently validated accuracy rate for the kiosk.

Can the result tell you whether you need new glasses?

It may provide a useful prompt to seek an updated prescription, but a quick acuity result is not the same as a comprehensive assessment. A clinician-reviewed prescription is described as a possible next step in the Eyebot feature, not an outcome promised to every user. If the result suggests a change, or your vision is blurry or has changed, arrange an eye-care appointment rather than treating the kiosk result as a complete diagnosis.

What it does not establish about eye health

A visual-acuity check addresses clarity on a defined test. It does not, by itself, establish that the eyes are healthy or rule out conditions that require other tests or an in-person evaluation. FDA’s classification of digital visual-acuity tests is not evidence that a particular kiosk has a specific FDA authorization, nor does the classification turn an acuity test into a general eye-health exam.

For children, the distinction matters especially. In a letter dated March 24, 2026, the American Optometric Association warned that consumers could mistake a 90-second automated kiosk test for an adequate comprehensive pediatric eye examination. That is the association’s stated concern; it is not an independent accuracy study of the kiosk.

Why diabetic-retinopathy AI is a different comparison

Some autonomous AI systems are designed to screen for diabetic retinopathy, an eye disease associated with diabetes. That is a different clinical task from checking visual acuity or whether a glasses prescription may need updating. Evidence for one task cannot establish the performance of a kiosk performing another.

A 2019 pivotal trial in npj Digital Medicine studied a specified autonomous AI system for detecting diabetic retinopathy in 900 participants. For that study’s defined task, the researchers reported 87.2% sensitivity (95% confidence interval 81.8–91.2%), 90.7% specificity (95% confidence interval 88.3–92.7%), and 96.1% imageability. These figures apply to that system, population, and endpoint—not to Eyebot or to automated vision tests generally. The FDA’s list of AI-enabled medical devices likewise should be read as information about listed devices, not as blanket validation of every AI eye-care product.

What to check before relying on an automated test

  • What is being measured? Look for a clear explanation of whether the service checks visual acuity, screens for a named condition, or performs another assessment.
  • Who reviews the result? Find out whether a qualified clinician reviews it and whether a prescription is actually available to you.
  • What happens if the result is concerning? Check whether the service provides a referral or directs you to in-person care.
  • What evidence applies to this specific service? Published results should match the device, intended users, clinical task, and outcome—not merely involve AI or eye care.

So, is it the future of vision care?

Automated kiosks may make a limited vision check more convenient and help some people recognize that they should seek follow-up. The evidence cited here supports treating the 90-second test as a quick first look, not as a substitute for comprehensive eye care. Whether such services become a useful part of vision care depends on clear limits, appropriate clinician review, and evidence for the specific test and purpose.
