A TV antenna can replace paid TV only for the local broadcast stations it reliably receives at your home. It cannot replace Philo’s paid channel lineup or Hulu’s streaming library, and it will not unlock premium channels. The $15 used antenna in the headline is one person’s purchase—not evidence that the same setup will work in every home.
What a TV antenna can replace
A digital TV tuner and antenna can receive broadcast stations transmitted over the air in your area. Those may include local network affiliates and other broadcast channels, but the available lineup and reception depend on your location, antenna, and placement. The Federal Trade Commission explains the basics of over-the-air reception in its consumer guidance on indoor TV antennas.
That makes an antenna a possible substitute for the local broadcast channels you actually receive—not a general replacement for a streaming service. It has no on-demand library, and it does not provide paid cable-style channels.
Does Philo have local channels?
No. Philo says it does not currently carry local channels and suggests using an antenna as a supplement. That distinction matters: an antenna can add local broadcasts to a Philo setup, but it does not reproduce Philo’s paid lineup. Philo’s local-channel help page and current FAQ describe the service and its plans.

Can I get local channels with an antenna?
Possibly, but reception is specific to your home. The FCC’s Digital TV Reception Maps provide estimates based on a model that assumes an outdoor antenna 30 feet above ground. The FCC cautions that indoor reception can vary significantly. Terrain, nearby buildings and trees, weather, antenna placement, and equipment can all affect what you receive.

- HD Antenna for TV: Our digital TV antenna indoor adopts an upgraded Smart IC Chip, receives TV broadcasts including 4K, UHD and 1080 HDTV for the hd picture.
- 16FT Coax Cable: Coaxial cable is composed of a solid center conductor, dielectric insulation, three aluminum shielding layers, and a durable outer layer. so that you will never lose signal or suffer distortion even in bad weather.
- Compatibility and Usage Tips: Not suitable for older analog televisions; supports smart TVs and digital TVs. For optimal signal reception, try placing the antenna near a window or in other locations, and test both vertical and horizontal orientations.
- Easy to Install: Plug the coaxial cable from your digital indoor HDTV antenna into the ANT/IN connector on the back of your TV, point the TV antenna toward your local TV tower and scan for channels. (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels).
Use the map to plan, not to assume a station will come in clearly. A signal estimate does not guarantee reliable reception in the room or position where you plan to watch.
What an antenna will not replace
- Philo’s paid channels: Broadcast reception does not provide Philo’s cable-style channel package.
- Hulu’s on-demand library: An antenna does not stream Hulu shows, movies, or other online content.
- Premium subscription channels: The FTC warns that antennas do not provide subscription channels such as HBO or AMC for free. Be skeptical of antenna or amplifier advertising that promises otherwise.
Hulu + Live TV is a different case from Philo because it includes local channels in some markets. Hulu says availability depends on location and directs customers to check its lineup by ZIP code on the Hulu + Live TV page. Its plans and prices help page says listed prices apply to new subscriptions as of September 23, 2026.

How to check which TV channels you can get with an antenna
- Enter your home location in the FCC’s DTV Reception Maps and note the stations the map predicts may be receivable. Treat the result as an estimate, especially if you plan to use an indoor antenna.
- Connect the antenna to a TV with a digital tuner, place it where you intend to use it, and run the TV’s channel scan. The tuner and antenna receive available broadcasts; the scan identifies channels the TV detects at that position.
- Test whether the stations you care about remain watchable in normal viewing conditions. If reception is unreliable, try a different antenna position and rescan before relying on it as a replacement for paid service.
- For Hulu + Live TV, check the channel list by ZIP code on Hulu’s site. A channel’s availability through Hulu and its reception by antenna are separate questions.
Should you cancel Philo or Hulu after buying an antenna?
Decide based on what your household watches, not on the antenna’s purchase price alone. List the local broadcasts, paid channels, shows, on-demand programs, and sports you use. Then check which of those the antenna receives reliably and which require a service.
- Antenna alone may fit if the broadcasts you want come in reliably and you do not need a paid channel package or streaming library.
- Philo plus antenna may fit if you want Philo’s paid lineup as well as local broadcasts the antenna can receive.
- Hulu + Live TV may fit if its local lineup is available at your ZIP code and you want its live-TV and streaming offerings; compare the current channel list and price with your needs.
At the time Hulu’s live-TV page was checked on October 5, 2026, it showed a regular price of $99.99 per month after a limited-time offer. Promotions, eligibility, and renewal prices can change; confirm the current price and local lineup before subscribing or cancelling another service.
The headline’s $15 used antenna and the reported cancellation outcome are personal details, not independently verified reception results. Without the antenna model, location, channel scan, and viewing needs, that experience cannot establish what another household will receive or whether an antenna can replace its services.
