If your mailer says “campaign sent” but nobody received it, first find out whether the campaign had any eligible recipients at all. Check the selected list or segment and its count, compare the send time with list-import or audience-refresh timing, then inspect recipient-level send and exclusion logs. A campaign status can describe a step in the sending process; it does not necessarily mean a message reached an inbox.
First, confirm what the campaign targeted
Open the campaign overview and record the selected list or segment, the audience count shown, and the send time. Check the campaign’s actual target rather than relying only on a count displayed earlier during setup: the audience may have changed, or the campaign may be attached to a different target than intended.
In its documented investigation of a Single Send that went to zero recipients, Twilio SendGrid support advises checking the campaign’s associated List IDs. The procedure says that if no List ID is present, the send was configured for all contacts in that system. That detail is specific to SendGrid’s workflow; other mailers may represent an all-contacts audience differently. Twilio SendGrid’s zero-recipient troubleshooting guidance

Compare send timing with list imports and audience refreshes
Compare the campaign’s actual send time with when the target list was uploaded or created. SendGrid support identifies close timing as one possible explanation for a zero-recipient send: if a campaign runs before a list upload has completed, the send may have no contacts to process. This is a documented possibility, not a diagnosis for every mailer or every zero-recipient campaign.
For a scheduled campaign, also check whether the platform uses the audience captured when it was scheduled or recalculates membership at send time. Klaviyo documents both snapshot and send-time refresh behavior; the setting can affect which profiles are included if the audience changes between scheduling and sending. Look for import completion or segment-calculation timestamps, and compare them with the campaign’s send time. If an import was still running, or the segment had not finished updating, resolve that timing issue and verify the resulting audience before sending again.
Find out whether recipients were excluded
An intended recipient may be skipped because the address is ineligible under the platform’s rules. Klaviyo lists unsubscribe, spam complaint, hard bounce, invalid or missing email address, manual exclusion, Smart Sending, and suspicious email as possible skip reasons. These are Klaviyo examples, not a universal list: use the reason shown by your own mailer rather than assuming the same rules apply.

Review recipient activity or the campaign’s exclusion report. Count how many profiles were targeted, how many were skipped or excluded, and the reasons recorded for those outcomes. If the logs show that the audience was populated but every profile was excluded, investigate the reported eligibility or suppression rules; do not bypass consent or unsubscribe controls to force a send.

Campaign-level status alone may not reveal what happened to each recipient. Adobe Campaign’s documentation says sending logs show each recipient’s status, while exclusion logs list messages removed from the target and the reason. Inspect those recipient-level records, where available, to determine whether the campaign had no targets, skipped profiles, or handed messages to a provider. Adobe Campaign delivery-status documentation
Adobe defines Sent as: “The delivery was correctly sent to the message provider (but the recipient did not necessarily receive it).” The definition applies to Adobe Campaign v8 and Campaign Classic v7, and its documentation was last updated May 11, 2026. It describes provider handoff, not proof of inbox delivery or reading.
SMTP responses also depend on the service and configuration. Cloudflare documents that when “Drop suppressed recipients” is enabled for SMTP, suppressed recipients are removed before the remaining recipients are processed. If none remain, SMTP may return 250 2.0.0 Ok without a Message-ID, while delivering nothing; those suppressed recipients appear as Rejected in Cloudflare email sending logs. This is a Cloudflare-specific behavior, not a universal meaning of a successful SMTP response. Cloudflare Email Service suppression-list documentation
Quick Recap
Best Value
Before you retry
- Confirm the intended list or segment is attached and contains the expected profiles.
- Wait for any list import or audience calculation to finish, then check the count again.
- Review recipient-level skip, suppression, and exclusion reasons; preserve consent and unsubscribe rules.
- Save the original campaign’s status, timestamps, and logs so you can compare them with the retry.
- Retry only after correcting the identified cause and confirming the audience is eligible. A corrected audience does not guarantee inbox delivery.
