For a fixed desk, a USB webcam is usually the simplest live-streaming camera. Choose the Logitech C922 Pro for a straightforward setup, the Elgato Facecam for a sharp 1080p/60fps picture when you already have a microphone, the Obsbot Tiny 2 if you move around, or the Logitech StreamCam for automatic framing. The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III suits creators who also want a compact camera for still photography. These picks serve different needs; none is a universal winner.
Which camera should you use for live streaming?
Start with where and how you stream. A webcam connects directly to a computer and is convenient for a fixed desk. A standalone camera can offer a more flexible shooting setup, but connecting it by HDMI typically requires a compatible capture device, a computer, and streaming software. A camera’s maximum recording resolution is not necessarily the resolution or frame rate it can send to a live stream.
- Fixed desk, simplest setup: Logitech C922 Pro.
- 1080p/60fps and separate audio: Elgato Facecam.
- Movement in front of the camera: Obsbot Tiny 2.
- Automatic framing and 1080p/60fps: Logitech StreamCam.
- Streaming plus still photography: Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III.
The five choices below reflect distinct use cases in Digital Camera World’s guide, updated 7 January 2026, rather than a claim that they outperform every other camera. Read the guide and its testing context.

Five cameras for different streaming setups
1. Logitech C922 Pro: a practical fixed-desk webcam
The C922 Pro is Digital Camera World’s 2026 guide pick for most streamers. Its reported streaming modes are 1080p at 30fps or 720p at 60fps; the guide’s quick-spec block lists 720p live streaming while its narrative also describes 1080p/30 live streaming. Treat those as the guide’s stated modes, not as evidence of 1080p/60 output. The guide also reports a 78-degree field of view and stereo microphones, but says the webcam does not support an external mic.
#1 Best Overall
- STUNNING HD VIDEO QUALITY — Live stream and record in stunning 1080p HD resolution with crisp, detailed imaging, right out of the box.
- STREAM ANYWHERE — Go where the story takes you. Stream live from anywhere in the world using Wi-Fi, Ethernet or even your smartphone’s LTE network.
- INTELLIGENT APP CONTROL — Wirelessly control your Mevo and create compelling content with features like Auto-Director, all from your smartphone.
- MULTICAM MADE EASY — Connect up the three Mevo Start cameras to easily create broadcast-quality streams with multiple angles.
- ADVANCED ONBOARD AUDIO — Capture clean, clear audio using the built-in microphone or connect external audio sources for advanced setups.
Choose it if you want a direct computer webcam for a stationary setup and its built-in audio is sufficient. If microphone choice is important, plan for a separate audio route or pick a webcam designed to work with external sound.
2. Elgato Facecam: 1080p/60fps when audio is handled separately
Digital Camera World describes the Facecam as delivering an uncompressed 1080p/60fps feed. Its fixed focus and lack of a built-in microphone make it a more natural fit for a controlled desk shot where you supply audio separately. It is not the right choice if you expect the camera itself to provide sound or need autofocus to follow movement.

- Unmatched 4K Streaming Quality - The EMEET S600 streaming camera boasts a high-definition 4K sony 1/2.55'' sensor, delivering crisp, clear images far exceeding typical webcam quality. With versatile resolution options, enjoy stunning 4K at 30FPS or smooth 1080P at 60FPS. Ideal for aspiring streamers, game streaming, and content creation, this 4K webcam ensures exceptional experience for you and your audience. Note: Video resolution depends on built-in camera software or apps like PotPlayer/OBS.
- Advanced PDAF Autofocus & Light Balance – 4K webcam S600's PDAF(Phase Detection Autofocus) tech offers significant advantages over common autofocus such as faster speed, higher precision, and more stable performance in various scenes features. Its auto light adjustment capability balances shadows and highlights even in low-light environments, keeping every detail sharp and clear on screen, making it ideal for content creators and live streamers who demand top-tier performance and visual quality.
- Enhanced Audio Clarity & Customizable FOV - The EMEET S600 4K streaming webcam is equipped with premium microphones that use a proprietary algorithm to filter out background noise and capture your voice with exceptional clarity. Noise-canceling feature is enabled by default but can be turned off through the EMEETLINK software. At 1080P, the FOV adjusts 40°-73°, allowing you to focus on you and surroundings, while at 4K, it’s fixed at 73° for better image quality and less distortion.
- Integrated Privacy Cover & Rugged Design - The 4K webcam for streaming boasts a built-in privacy cover right on the lens, ensuring it won't accidentally open or get touched. Crafted with meticulous engineering, every component of the S600, from the clips to the joints, is designed for durability and stability. Just plug it in, and you’re ready to go, making it an easy addition to your workflow. For those looking to fine-tune image parameters or enhance sound quality, EMEETLINK software is available for advanced customization. Both simplicity and advanced needs can be met effortlessly.
3. Obsbot Tiny 2: tracking for a presenter who moves
The Tiny 2 is a motorized camera with AI tracking, positioned in Digital Camera World’s guide for people who move around while presenting. The guide reports 4K output. Tracking can help keep a moving subject framed, but consider whether you actually need a camera that follows you: for a fixed seat, simpler framing may be all that is required.
4. Logitech StreamCam: automatic features over USB
The StreamCam offers 1080p/60fps, autofocus, automatic exposure, vertical video, and auto-framing, according to Logitech’s product page and Digital Camera World’s guide. Logitech’s page is available at Logitech StreamCam. The guide flags its short, non-detachable USB-C cable, so check that your computer and intended mounting position work with the included connection.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
5. Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III: a compact camera beyond streaming
Choose the G7 X Mark III if you want a compact camera that can also take still photographs, rather than a device dedicated to the desk. Digital Camera World lists 4K UHD at 30p, a built-in 24–100mm-equivalent lens, a front-facing screen, and a 3.5mm microphone port. It cannot change lenses. Those recording specifications do not by themselves establish which live-streaming connection or mode will work for your computer; check the camera’s manual and your chosen connection method before buying.
Can you use a camera as a webcam?
Yes, if the camera and connection method support it. A compatible camera may connect by USB using manufacturer software, or send HDMI video through a capture device to the computer. The available functions vary by camera model, operating system, and software: verify the exact combination rather than assuming that one model’s support applies across a brand.

USB webcam software
Some cameras can send video over USB with supported webcam software, avoiding a capture card. Nikon’s guide describes this route for supported models and notes that its USB method does not carry camera audio, so a separate microphone path may be needed. Check Nikon’s current supported-model information and setup instructions at Nikon’s live-streaming guide. Sony also describes USB streaming as a route that does not require a capture card; confirm the supported features for your camera and operating system in Sony’s streaming guidance.

For an HDMI setup, Sony’s instructions call for a camera with supported output, an HDMI-to-USB capture device, a computer with streaming software, and HDMI and USB cables. The capture device converts the camera’s HDMI feed into a signal the computer can use. Sony’s model-specific instructions are at Sony’s HDMI livestreaming support page.
Best Value
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- HD lighting adjustment and autofocus: The Logitech webcam automatically fine-tunes the lighting, producing bright, razor-sharp images even in low-light settings. This makes it a great webcam for streaming and an ideal web camera for laptop use
- Advanced capture software: Easily create and share video content with this Logitech camera that is suitable for use as a desktop computer camera or a monitor webcam

For HDMI streaming, look for clean HDMI: an output without camera indicators such as status, battery, or exposure information overlaid on the picture. Support is model-specific. Panasonic’s compatibility information distinguishes clean HDMI, capture-card compatibility, and direct-streaming capability by model; some models can provide a clean live feed but not while recording. Check the relevant model entry in Panasonic’s compatibility list and its live-streaming FAQs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What else do you need for a reliable stream?
- Audio: Decide how sound reaches the computer. A webcam’s built-in mic may be convenient, while a separate microphone can offer more control. The Facecam has no built-in mic, and Nikon says its described USB camera connection does not transmit camera audio.
- Stable framing: Use a tripod, clamp, or suitable mount to keep the camera steady. Nikon recommends considering a tripod or clamp in its setup guidance.
- Light: Consistent lighting can make the image easier to watch. Nikon recommends considering a constant light source; the Razer Kiyo is an alternative webcam option in Digital Camera World’s guide when an integrated light is a priority.
- Power and heat: A long session can tax a camera. Sony warns that sustained high-quality streaming can raise internal temperature enough to trigger automatic shutdown until the camera cools. Check the model manual, allow ventilation, and consider external power if the camera supports it.
- Connection and compatibility: Before committing to a camera, confirm its live output mode, computer connection, operating-system support, and any required capture device or software. Do not infer live output from a maximum recording specification.
Nikon’s setup suggestions, including tripod or clamp, constant light, and an optional lavalier microphone for HDMI workflows, are practical options rather than requirements for every streamer. Its guidance is at Nikon USA.
Quick Recap
How to choose between a webcam and a camera
- Decide where the stream happens. For a fixed desk, begin with a USB webcam. For a camera you will also use for photography or a more flexible shot, consider a compact or interchangeable-lens camera.
- Set your required live resolution and frame rate. Compare the camera’s streaming output, not just its recording modes. For example, the C922 Pro is reported at 1080p/30fps or 720p/60fps, while the StreamCam is listed at 1080p/60fps.
- Choose framing based on movement. A fixed shot needs reliable positioning; a presenter who moves may benefit from tracking or auto-framing.
- Confirm audio and lighting. Check for a built-in microphone or an audio input, and decide whether you need a separate microphone and steady light.
- Verify the connection before purchase. For USB, confirm supported webcam software and whether audio travels over that connection. For HDMI, check clean output, capture-device compatibility, power, and heat guidance for the exact camera model.
