Full-frame is well supported and capable, but it is not automatically the right camera format. Choose by comparing the complete body-and-lens system against the subjects you photograph, the depth of field you want, what you can carry, and what you can spend.

Why full-frame became the default reference

Full-frame has historical momentum: its dimensions align with 35mm film, so photographers could use film-era lenses as designed. Established users and manufacturers’ investments in lens lineups reinforced its position. Richard Butler’s October 2026 DPReview article, reproduced by Brokenmount, describes full-frame as prominent and broadly supported, not universally superior.

A larger sensor has more surface area to capture light, which can offer an image-quality advantage. But sensor size alone does not determine whether a camera system is the best fit: the lenses needed for a particular field of view affect system size, weight, and cost. Compare a body with the lenses you would actually use, rather than comparing camera bodies in isolation.

Compare formats by the trade-offs that matter

  • Image quality: More sensor area can be an advantage, but the value of that advantage depends on your photography.
  • Portability: Include the appropriate lenses in the comparison. A smaller kit is easier to carry and may be more likely to come with you.
  • Total cost: Budget for the lenses that deliver your intended field of view, not just the body.
  • Depth of field: Consider whether the format and lens combination can deliver the depth-of-field rendering you want.
  • Reach and lens choices: A smaller format may suit wildlife or travel if the available system gives you useful reach or compact lenses.
  • System support: Butler’s article says Canon, Nikon, and Sony make APS-C cameras while directing most of their lens investment toward full-frame. Support varies by system, so check the lenses available for the camera you are considering.

What each format may suit

Full-frame: broad support and image quality, with system costs

Full-frame is a strong option if its image-quality benefits, lens selection, and system support suit your needs. Digital full-frame bodies and lenses can be larger and more expensive than film-era 35mm equipment, however. Factor in the lenses you need before deciding that a full-frame body is the better value.

APS-C: a possible balance of size, price, and image quality

APS-C can offer a combination of image quality, camera size, and lens size closer to 35mm film. Butler’s comparison says APS-C does not match the depth of field of 35mm film; treat that as a specific distinction, not a guarantee about every camera-and-lens pairing. The article uses the Nikon FE, Fujifilm X-T5, and Nikon Zf as examples in a size comparison. They illustrate the comparison and are not tested recommendations.

When assessing APS-C, compare the body with a lens that provides the field of view you want. A compact body does not tell you how portable the complete kit will be.

Four Thirds: a smaller kit for travel or wildlife

Butler identifies travel and wildlife as situations where a Four Thirds kit may be appealing: the smaller system can offer practical portability, longer reach, or compact prime-lens combinations. The trade-off described in the article is image quality relative to larger formats. It may be the better fit when carrying a manageable kit matters more than maximizing sensor area.

44 x 33mm medium format: a specific sensor-size comparison

Butler’s article says 44 x 33mm medium format offers around a two-thirds-of-a-stop advantage over full-frame at the same exposure. That figure applies to the stated sensor dimensions and condition; it should not be generalized to every medium-format system. The article also identifies larger, more expensive lenses as a downside.

Make the choice against your actual kit

  1. List your subjects. Note whether you mostly photograph travel, wildlife, portraits, or other subjects, and what field of view or depth of field you need.
  2. Identify the lenses that would do the job. Compare available lenses across the formats you are considering, including size and cost.
  3. Assess the complete kit. Consider the body and those lenses together, not the body alone. Decide how much weight and bulk you are willing to carry.
  4. Set your priorities. Rank image quality, portability, total cost, depth of field, reach, and system support. A format that leads on one measure may compromise another.
  5. Choose the system that fits the priorities. If you cannot find a meaningful advantage for your photography in a larger format, its greater size or cost may not be worthwhile. If a smaller system’s trade-offs undermine your intended work, portability may not compensate.

As Butler puts it, “All formats are arbitrary size/price/image quality trade-offs. They may be popular or well-supported, but none is inherently best, because each has an innate compromise at its heart.”
