ISO is the camera setting that controls how strongly the sensor’s signal is amplified. Along with aperture and shutter speed, it helps determine exposure. Raising ISO can let you use a faster shutter speed or shoot in dimmer light, but it can also make image noise more noticeable. It does not make more light enter the lens.

What ISO means on a camera

ISO is the exposure setting associated with the camera sensor’s signal gain. The term comes from film speed: higher-ISO film could produce an exposure with less light. In a digital camera, increasing ISO changes how the sensor signal is handled; it does not increase the physical amount of light reaching the sensor through the lens. Nikon’s explanation of ISO control describes digital ISO as the sensor’s “sensitivity—the signal gain.”

ISO is one part of the exposure triangle, together with aperture and shutter speed. Aperture controls the opening in the lens, and shutter speed controls how long the sensor is exposed. ISO affects the resulting signal level. The settings work together, so ISO by itself does not determine whether a photo is correctly exposed. Canon’s exposure overview also explains the relationship among these three controls.

What happens when you raise ISO

A higher ISO can let you make the same exposure with less light, or keep your chosen aperture while using a faster shutter speed. For example, Nikon illustrates that with aperture held constant, changing from ISO 200 at 1/250 second to ISO 400 can allow 1/500 second for the same exposure. That is an instructional example, not a universal camera threshold or guarantee. Nikon’s ISO sensitivity guide explains this tradeoff.

The faster shutter speed can help reduce blur from subject or camera movement. In low light, raising ISO may therefore be preferable to accepting a shutter speed that is too slow for the scene. The tradeoff is that higher ISO can make noise more likely or more visible. Noise may appear as randomly spaced bright pixels, fog-like texture, or lines; the appearance and severity depend on the camera and the shooting conditions. The Nikon D780 manual describes these possible noise patterns.

How to choose an ISO

Start low when light is plentiful

In bright conditions, a lower ISO is often a sensible starting point. Choose the aperture and shutter speed that suit the scene, then raise ISO only if you need a brighter exposure or more shutter-speed flexibility.

Raise it when the scene needs a faster shutter

In dim light or when photographing movement, increase ISO if the shutter speed would otherwise be too slow for the result you want. Decide which matters more for the shot: a particular aperture, a faster shutter speed, or minimizing visible noise. ISO is a balancing control, not a setting with one best value for every photo.

Judge the result rather than follow a universal cutoff

There is no single ISO value at which noise becomes unacceptable on every camera. The International Organization for Standardization’s ISO 15739:2023 identifies exposure time, aperture, ISO sensitivity, camera operating temperature, and image processing as factors that affect image noise. Noise reduction and other processing can also change the visible result. A camera’s model, the scene, and the intended output all matter.

What Auto ISO does

Auto ISO lets the camera change ISO as lighting changes, while you control some or all of the other exposure settings. It can be useful when you want to maintain a particular aperture or shutter speed without adjusting ISO for every frame.

The available controls vary by camera. For example, the Nikon D780 manual describes settings for maximum sensitivity and minimum shutter speed. Those are D780-specific controls; check your camera’s manual for its menu names, limits, and behavior. Nikon D780: Adjusting the Camera’s Sensitivity to Light.

ISO at a glance

Choice Potential benefit Tradeoff
Lower ISO Often a good starting point in bright light; may make noise less noticeable. In dim conditions, it may require a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture to achieve the exposure.
Higher ISO Can support a faster shutter speed or a chosen aperture when light is limited. Can make image noise more likely or more visible; the result depends on camera and conditions.
