Short answer: the Cambridge Audio Melomania A100 SE gives you a music-first feature set—LDAC and aptX Lossless, Dolby Audio, adaptive noise cancellation, wireless charging and long stated battery life—without flagship pricing. Paying more is most defensible when you specifically need stronger noise cancellation, tighter phone-platform integration or a fit and support experience you cannot get from Cambridge’s value-oriented model. The available reviews do not establish that expensive earbuds automatically sound better.
Prices and availability move by country and date. The figures below are October 2026 review or launch snapshots, not promises of today’s street price.
What the Melomania A100 SE is—and what “SE” changes
The Melomania A100 SE is a special-edition version of Cambridge Audio’s Melomania A100 true-wireless earbuds. Cambridge’s official product page lists the hardware and software features; What Hi-Fi’s October 1, 2026 launch report identifies the two changes that define the SE edition: Dolby Audio and a blue finish. The SE is therefore an evolution of an existing model, not a completely new flagship tier.

Cambridge positions the earbuds around listening quality and practical everyday features. The specification includes 10 mm drivers, Class A/B amplification, Snapdragon Sound certification, adaptive active noise cancellation (ANC), six microphones, touch controls, app control and IPX5 water resistance. The supported Bluetooth codecs are LDAC, aptX Lossless, AAC and SBC. Those are capabilities, not guarantees of a particular sound or call result: the phone, operating system, subscription or file, Bluetooth mode and fit all influence what you actually hear.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Independent coverage describes the A100 SE as a comparatively affordable, sound-focused option. That positioning matters when comparing it with premium wireless earbuds: you are deciding whether a higher price buys a priority you can name, rather than assuming a more expensive logo represents a universal upgrade.
Cambridge Audio’s official A100 SE listing is the primary reference for the product specification. Regional versions can differ in stock, firmware, colour availability and price.
Core specifications at a glance
| Feature | Melomania A100 SE information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Edition | Special edition of the Melomania A100 | The SE adds Dolby Audio and a blue finish according to What Hi-Fi’s launch report. |
| Drivers and amplifier | 10 mm drivers; Class A/B amplification | These are design specifications from Cambridge, not independent proof of superior audible performance. |
| Codecs | LDAC, aptX Lossless, AAC and SBC | LDAC and aptX Lossless require a compatible playback device and an active compatible Bluetooth mode. |
| Spatial or processing feature | Dolby Audio | Included on the SE; the effect depends on supported content, device software and the listening mode. |
| Noise control | Adaptive ANC | Noise reduction changes with the environment and seal; performance is not represented by a single universal score. |
| Microphones | Six microphones | More microphones provide hardware for voice pickup and noise-control processing, but do not by themselves establish call quality. |
| Wireless charging | USB-C and Qi-compatible wireless charging | Cambridge describes wireless charging as Qi-compatible, not Qi-certified. |
| Water resistance | IPX5, as listed by TechRadar | Suitable protection is limited to the conditions covered by that rating; it is not a licence for submersion. |
| Controls | Touch controls and companion-app controls, as listed by TechRadar | Exact gestures and app labels can change with firmware and operating-system version. |
| Battery figures | Manufacturer and review measurements are qualified by ANC state; see the battery section | Do not compare a total-case claim with an earbud-only test unless the test conditions match. |
Price: compare the same country, date and generation
The A100 SE sits below the price band usually associated with flagship earbuds, but its price is not a permanent global number. The following amounts were reported in October 2026 and should be treated as dated snapshots.

Taxes, delivery, retailer discounts, currency changes and local warranty terms can make the checkout total different. Before buying, check the seller, exact model name, return window and warranty in your region. Do not compare a discounted older-generation pair with a full-price current model and call the difference a feature advantage.
What spending more can buy
Premium earbuds do not add value in one uniform way. They tend to justify their price through particular priorities. The evidence available for this comparison supports two clear reasons to spend more and one important reason not to assume you should.
Stronger noise cancellation, if that is your main use
Tom’s Guide directs readers who want “supreme” ANC toward Bose rather than the A100 SE. That is the reviewer’s comparative judgment, not a laboratory ranking of every premium earbud. If you commute beside engines, work in an open office or fly frequently, listen to how much low-frequency rumble disappears at a comfortable volume. ANC depends on the ear-tip seal, the shape of your ear, wind handling and the algorithm’s behaviour; a premium model may be worth the difference if it demonstrably reduces the noise you encounter.

Do not buy on the phrase “adaptive ANC” alone. The A100 SE has adaptive ANC, but the word describes an operating approach, not a guaranteed level of attenuation. A good return policy lets you test the earbuds against your actual train, office or street conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDeeper integration with your phone and other devices
Tom’s Guide points readers toward AirPods when Apple ecosystem integration is the deciding factor. Features such as automatic device switching, platform-specific controls, voice-assistant behaviour and account-level settings can save more time than an additional codec. These benefits are valuable only if your devices support them and you use the associated ecosystem. On a mixed-device setup, a standards-based pair with the codecs and controls you already understand may be less frustrating.
Potentially better fit, support or convenience—not an automatic sound upgrade
A higher price can reflect industrial design, case size, sensor behaviour, service policies or accessories, but the reviewed evidence does not prove that a premium pair will sound better than the A100 SE for every listener. Sound preference is personal, and codec support does not override tuning, seal or recording quality. Spend more when a specific improvement is important and testable for you; do not spend more merely because a model is positioned as “premium.”
Sound, codecs and Dolby Audio: what the specifications really mean
LDAC and aptX Lossless
LDAC and aptX Lossless are the A100 SE’s headline music features. They can carry more data or use lossless-oriented transmission under supported conditions, but a codec is a connection option, not a guarantee that every track becomes audibly better. Your phone must support the codec, Bluetooth settings must select it, and the connection must remain stable at the chosen mode. Some devices fall back to AAC or SBC when compatibility, radio conditions or power management require it.
Check codec support on both ends before paying for a premium model on the strength of a codec badge. A service’s stream quality, the original recording and the earbud’s acoustic tuning can matter more than the transport format. If your phone does not expose LDAC or aptX Lossless, those features remain unused even though the earbuds list them.

Dolby Audio
Dolby Audio is the SE-specific addition reported by What Hi-Fi. Its audible effect depends on how the phone, app and content implement Dolby processing. Treat it as an extra listening mode to evaluate with familiar tracks, not as proof that the A100 SE has a wider or more accurate soundstage than an expensive competitor.

Drivers and amplification
Cambridge specifies 10 mm drivers and Class A/B amplification. Driver diameter and amplifier class help describe the design, but they do not predict bass balance, treble smoothness, distortion or your personal preference on their own. Independent listening impressions are useful for forming expectations; they are not a substitute for trying the fit and tuning yourself.
ANC, microphones and calls
The A100 SE uses adaptive ANC and six microphones. Adaptive processing can respond to changing ambient sound, while the microphones provide input for noise control and voice pickup. In practice, the result depends on the ear-tip seal, placement, wind and software. A loose fit can let outside sound leak around the ANC system and can also make the earbuds sound thin.
If calls are a major reason to spend more, compare recordings made outdoors and indoors rather than relying on microphone count. The available A100 SE sources list six microphones but do not provide a standardized call-quality measurement. Premium alternatives may have better wind suppression or voice isolation, but that advantage must be verified for the environments where you take calls.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Battery and charging: read the conditions attached to every number
Cambridge’s product specification advertises up to 39 hours of total battery life and up to 21 hours with ANC on. What Hi-Fi’s October 1, 2026 launch report describes 6.5 hours from the earbuds and up to 39 hours in total with ANC off. Cambridge also says a 10-minute charge provides 3.2 hours of playback with ANC off. These figures are not interchangeable: ANC state, volume, codec, temperature, call use and the number of case recharges affect endurance.
The practical comparison is therefore “earbud time in my chosen mode” plus “how often I can recharge the case,” not a single headline total. If you commute with ANC enabled, use the ANC-on figure as the relevant manufacturer expectation. If you leave ANC off and listen at moderate volume, the longer claim may be closer to your routine. Independent results should be compared only when the test method and ANC state are known.
Charging is available through USB-C and Qi-compatible wireless charging. Cambridge does not describe the wireless implementation as Qi-certified, so check charger compatibility and alignment rather than assuming every charging pad will behave identically. A short top-up is useful before a journey, but the rapid-charge claim is specified with ANC off.

Fit, durability and controls
TechRadar lists IPX5 water resistance, touch controls and app controls. IPX5 addresses water jets under the rating’s test conditions; it does not make the earbuds waterproof for swimming or guarantee protection against every type of moisture. Wipe sweat and rain from the contacts before placing the buds in the case.

Ear-tip size changes the acoustic seal, ANC effectiveness and comfort, so use the supplied sizes methodically and walk around before deciding. A model that feels secure for one ear shape may loosen for another. Because comfort cannot be inferred from a specification sheet, a retailer’s return policy is part of the product’s real value.
Touch controls can be convenient but may register accidental taps when you adjust an earbud. Use the app to inspect or change gestures if the software offers that option, and confirm that the controls you need—playback, calls, ANC modes and transparency, if available—are accessible without reaching for your phone.
A decision process for choosing the A100 SE or paying more
- Write down your dominant use. Mark commuting, office work, travel, home listening, calls, exercise or multi-device use. Choose the feature that solves the most frequent problem, not the longest specification list.
- Check your phone and source-device compatibility. Confirm whether your devices support LDAC, aptX Lossless, Dolby processing and the companion-app operating-system requirements. If a feature is unavailable on your phone, remove it from the value calculation.
- Set an honest ANC requirement. If you mainly listen in a quiet room, adaptive ANC may be a convenience rather than a reason to upgrade. If low-frequency transport noise dominates your day, prioritize a model you can test and return if attenuation is insufficient.
- Decide whether ecosystem features save you time. With Apple devices, evaluate the integration advantages Tom’s Guide associates with AirPods. With mixed devices, weigh universal codec and app support against platform-specific automation.
- Compare endurance in the mode you will use. Use the ANC-on or ANC-off condition that matches your routine, and distinguish earbud runtime from case-inclusive runtime. Do not use a premium model’s case total to hide short single-charge endurance.
- Test the physical fit. Try each ear tip, walk, speak and turn your head. A secure seal is more important to both bass and ANC than a driver-size comparison.
- Verify the transaction. At checkout, confirm the exact A100 SE edition, colour, seller, local warranty, return period and current price. The historical figures in this article are not a live offer.
Comparison matrix: match the purchase to the priority
| Your priority | What the A100 SE offers | When a premium model may be worth considering | Evidence or caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Music features at a value-oriented price | LDAC, aptX Lossless, Dolby Audio, 10 mm drivers and Class A/B amplification | Only if you prefer a premium model’s tuning after listening or need another feature | The available comparisons do not prove that higher price means better sound. |
| Maximum noise reduction | Adaptive ANC | If testing shows stronger suppression of your particular engines, voices or office noise | Tom’s Guide recommends Bose for supreme ANC; this is a reviewer judgment, not a universal measurement. |
| Apple-device integration | Bluetooth codec and app-based operation | If automatic switching and platform-specific controls are central to your workflow | Tom’s Guide points readers toward AirPods for this priority. |
| Long listening days | Conditioned manufacturer and review battery figures, USB-C and wireless charging | If your preferred premium pair lasts longer in the exact ANC and volume mode you use | Compare like-for-like tests; ANC state changes the result. |
| Workout and outdoor use | IPX5 listing and touch controls | If you need a different fit, stronger wind handling or a more robust support policy | IPX5 is not a swimming or submersion rating; comfort remains personal. |
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Treating a codec as a sound-quality guarantee
Lossless-capable transmission cannot fix a poor seal, an unsuitable tuning or a source device that never enables the codec. Verify the complete playback chain and listen with familiar material.
Comparing prices from different dates
A launch price, a review-time price and a temporary retailer discount describe different moments. Record the date, currency, tax treatment and generation before deciding that one model is cheaper.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Ignoring return and hygiene policies
Earbuds are fit-dependent. Confirm that opened in-ear products can be returned under the seller’s policy, and use clean tips while testing. A theoretical feature advantage is worthless if the seal is unstable.
Using the wrong charger assumption
Qi-compatible is not the same wording as Qi-certified. Test the case on your intended pad and keep a USB-C cable available for reliable charging.
Who should buy the A100 SE?
Choose the A100 SE when music features lead your brief
It is a strong candidate when you want LDAC or aptX Lossless support, Dolby Audio, adaptive ANC, wireless charging and a long case-inclusive endurance claim in a relatively affordable package. It is especially sensible when your phone supports the codecs and you are willing to judge the sound and fit yourself rather than buying on prestige.
Spend more when a named premium benefit matters
Move upmarket when your daily life makes one of these benefits measurable: materially better ANC in your commute, seamless integration across your primary devices, a fit the A100 SE cannot provide, or support and durability terms that justify the extra cost. Compare current models and local pricing at the time of purchase; premium ranges change quickly.
Verdict
The Melomania A100 SE’s documented value is concentrated in music-oriented features and useful charging options. Premium wireless earbuds can earn their higher price through stronger noise cancellation or ecosystem integration, but the available evidence does not support a blanket claim that they sound better. Buy the Cambridge when its codecs, Dolby Audio, ANC, fit and battery conditions match your routine; spend more only for a specific advantage you can identify and test.
