Choose the Cambridge Audio L/R X if you want a complete matched pair of active stereo speakers with built-in amplification, HDMI eARC, an integrated moving-magnet (MM) phono stage, extensive wired inputs and broad streaming support. Choose the Sonos Era 300 if your priority is Dolby Atmos and spatial audio from a single speaker, Trueplay room correction, or integration with an existing Sonos system and Arc or Beam (Gen 2) surrounds.

These are different kinds of purchase. Cambridge Audio lists the L/R X at $2,399 per matched pair in the United States, while Sonos lists the Era 300 at $499 for one speaker. Those prices were observed on October 13, 2026, and can change. Compare the system you actually plan to build rather than treating the sticker prices as equivalent.

What you are really choosing

The L/R X and Era 300 are not interchangeable versions of the same product. The L/R X is a left/right stereo system: two cabinets are sold together, amplification is built in, and the speakers are designed to create a conventional stereo soundstage. Cambridge describes the active design as a system in which amplification, tuning and signal processing are optimized inside the cabinets. Cambridge Audio’s L/R X product page identifies it as a matched active pair.

The Era 300 is a single multi-driver wireless speaker. Sonos positions it around spatial audio and Dolby Atmos, with six drivers aimed toward the front, sides and top. You can buy one for standalone listening, add a second for a stereo pair, or use two as surrounds with a Sonos Arc or Beam (Gen 2). Sonos’s US product listing describes those configurations.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That difference changes the answer to “which is better?” The L/R X is the more complete traditional hi-fi and TV-source system. The Era 300 is the more straightforward route to Atmos music and Sonos-based surround sound. Neither the quoted wattage nor Atmos support alone proves that one sounds better for every listener; the available independent review covered home use of the L/R X, not a controlled side-by-side test with the Era 300. Tom’s Guide’s L/R X review should therefore be read as one reviewer’s experience, not a direct comparison.

Price, package and the cost of a useful system

Product US listing observed October 13, 2026 What the listing includes How to interpret it
Cambridge Audio L/R X $2,399 per matched pair Two active speakers forming a left/right stereo system The price is for the pair, with amplification already built in. Cambridge’s opened page redirected to a UK page showing £1,799 per pair, so do not use that UK figure as a US price.
Sonos Era 300 $499 per speaker One multi-driver wireless speaker A second speaker costs extra if you want a stereo pair; two Era 300 units can also serve as surrounds with Arc or Beam (Gen 2).

The fairest comparison is based on your intended configuration. One Era 300 costs far less than the L/R X pair, but it is not the same physical arrangement. A pair of Era 300 speakers is a different purchase again, and adding them to a Sonos home-theater system may make more sense than using them as a conventional stereo pair.

Both prices are manufacturer listings, not guaranteed future prices, sales prices or independent value judgments. Check the current regional product page before ordering.

Why the Cambridge Audio L/R X suits a traditional stereo system

It is a complete stereo pair

The two L/R X speakers are sold as a matched left/right system. Because amplification is inside the cabinets, you do not need to buy a separate integrated amplifier or power amplifier. That can simplify a hi-fi system while still giving you physical left/right speaker separation.

Cambridge lists 800 W of total amplification. Treat that as a manufacturer specification, not as a guarantee that the L/R X will sound better than a lower-powered speaker. Power ratings do not describe cabinet placement, voicing, room acoustics or the quality of a particular recording.

Its driver and cabinet design is conventional hi-fi

The listed hardware consists of a custom 28 mm tweeter, two 5-inch woofers and two 6-inch passive radiators. Cambridge publishes a 35 Hz–24 kHz frequency response with a ±3 dB tolerance. That figure describes the manufacturer’s specification; it is not an independent laboratory comparison against the Era 300.

It accepts substantially more physical sources

For a system built around a turntable, television, CD transport, computer or other wired source, the L/R X has the broader connection list:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • MM phono input: connect a moving-magnet turntable directly without buying a separate phono preamp.
  • RCA auxiliary input: connect a conventional line-level analog source.
  • USB-C audio: use a compatible digital USB audio source.
  • USB-A media: play supported media from USB storage.
  • Optical TOSLINK: connect a television or other optical digital source.
  • HDMI eARC: send television audio over the TV’s eARC connection.
  • Subwoofer output: add a powered subwoofer when you want more low-frequency output.

The detailed specification also lists wired Ethernet and both USB-C or wireless WiSA HT speaker linking. Check the source device and cable requirements before assuming every USB or WiSA product will work; the manufacturer’s compatibility documentation is the authority for specific equipment.

Streaming is not limited to one app

Cambridge lists StreamMagic Gen 4, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth SBC/AAC, Google Cast, Roon Ready and AirPlay 2. The product material names Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz and Amazon Music among the supported services. This makes the L/R X a flexible network player for households that use several playback protocols or want to mix app-based and physical sources.

Room optimization can matter as much as specifications

The L/R X includes room optimization and DynamEQ. In a home review, Tom’s Guide reported that room adjustment was useful and that positioning and furnishings changed the result. The same review described the speakers as large and criticized their price. Those comments are a reviewer’s experience after a couple of months of home testing, not a universal measurement or a guarantee for every room.

Why the Sonos Era 300 suits spatial audio and Sonos systems

Its design is built around spatial playback

Sonos places six drivers around the front, sides and top of the Era 300. The purpose is to create a more enveloping presentation for compatible Dolby Atmos music. If your main goal is to hear Atmos mixes and you prefer a single-cabinet installation, this design addresses that goal directly.

Atmos support still depends on compatible content and playback paths. A conventional stereo recording does not automatically become a discrete Atmos mix simply because it is played through an Era 300.

It can grow into a Sonos home-theater setup

Sonos describes two Era 300 speakers as surround speakers when paired with an Arc or Beam (Gen 2). This is a system role, not a direct TV-input feature. The documented path is to connect the soundbar to the television and let the Era 300 pair handle surround channels through the Sonos system.

If you already own an Arc or Beam (Gen 2), adding Era 300 units can be more coherent than introducing a separate stereo platform. If you do not own Sonos home-theater equipment, include the cost of the soundbar and any additional speakers when comparing systems.

Setup and control are centered on the Sonos app

The Era 300 uses the Sonos app for setup and control, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay 2 also listed. Touch controls and voice features are built into the product. Trueplay provides Sonos’s room-tuning option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Era 300 is also listed as humidity resistant, which can be useful in rooms where occasional moisture is expected. Humidity resistance does not make it waterproof; keep the speaker within the placement limits in Sonos’s current instructions.

Line-in is possible, but it is an accessory path

For a turntable or another auxiliary source, Sonos specifies an auxiliary cable together with its Line-In Adapter. The Era 300 does not provide the L/R X’s built-in MM phono input. A turntable without its own phono preamp would therefore need an appropriate external phono stage before the Sonos line-in connection.

TV and home-theater decision

Choose L/R X for a direct TV connection

The L/R X lists HDMI eARC as an input. With a compatible television and HDMI cable, the TV can send audio directly to the speakers through the eARC connection. Optical TOSLINK is also listed as an alternative digital input.

Before buying, verify that your television has an eARC or compatible ARC output and that its audio settings can pass the formats you intend to use. The presence of HDMI eARC does not by itself turn the L/R X into a Dolby Atmos surround package.

Choose Era 300 for Sonos surround expansion

The Era 300’s documented home-theater use is as a surround speaker with Arc or Beam (Gen 2). Sonos does not list a direct HDMI input on the Era 300 product page. It should therefore not be treated as a standalone HDMI soundbar replacement.

This distinction is decisive: L/R X is the more self-contained stereo TV system, while Era 300 is the more natural rear-channel choice inside a compatible Sonos theater.

Turntable and wired-source decision

When L/R X is the simpler vinyl setup

A moving-magnet turntable can connect to the L/R X’s MM phono input. The speakers provide the amplification and phono stage, leaving fewer boxes and cables. You still need to confirm that your cartridge is moving-magnet and that the turntable’s output mode is set appropriately; a turntable with a built-in preamp should normally use a line-level input rather than a phono input.

When Era 300 can still work

An Era 300 can accept an auxiliary source through the Sonos Line-In Adapter and an auxiliary cable. A turntable with a built-in phono preamp can feed that line input. If the turntable outputs raw phono-level signal, add a compatible external phono preamp first. This approach adds an accessory and another device, but it can make sense when the rest of the home is already Sonos-based.

Sonos’s integrated platform

The Era 300 is controlled primarily through the Sonos app and can join other Sonos rooms. AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth provide additional playback options. The strongest reason to choose it is often not a single codec or service, but compatibility with Sonos speakers and soundbars already installed in the home.

Make a list of the services and devices you actually use. A protocol listed on a specification page is valuable only if your phone, music app, television and network support the required connection.

Placement, size and room planning

Plan for two large Cambridge cabinets

Each L/R X speaker measures 200 × 330 × 260 mm and weighs 10.4 kg according to Cambridge’s detailed specifications. Tom’s Guide also called the speakers large. You need two stable surfaces or stands, enough separation to establish left and right channels, and shelving that can support the weight. Leave the ventilation and clearance recommended by Cambridge rather than pushing the cabinets into a tight recess.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for the Era 300’s footprint and orientation

Sonos lists the Era 300 at 10.24 inches wide, 7.28 inches deep and 6.3 inches tall in the product-page image caption. Although one unit occupies less floor space than a pair of L/R X cabinets, its spatial effect still depends on placement and unobstructed driver directions. Avoid covering the top or side-firing areas with shelves, panels or tightly adjacent objects.

Trueplay and Cambridge’s room optimization can compensate for some room effects, but neither replaces sensible placement. Furniture, walls and listening position remain part of the system.

How to decide before ordering

  1. Count the speakers you need. Decide whether you want one spatial speaker, a pair of stereo speakers, or two surrounds behind an existing soundbar.
  2. List every source. Include television, turntable, game console, computer, network services and any physical media. Mark which sources require HDMI, optical, phono, RCA or USB.
  3. Check the ecosystem. If Arc, Beam (Gen 2) or other Sonos rooms are already installed, Era 300 integration may outweigh its accessory requirements. If you use Roon, Google Cast, Ethernet or a broad mix of wired sources, L/R X’s listed connectivity may be more useful.
  4. Measure the room and furniture. Account for two 10.4 kg Cambridge cabinets or the Era 300’s 10.24 × 7.28 × 6.3-inch footprint, plus the clearance needed for drivers and cables.
  5. Confirm the television path. Choose L/R X if you need a speaker pair with HDMI eARC. Choose Era 300 for TV surround only when you have, or plan to buy, a compatible Sonos Arc or Beam (Gen 2) system.
  6. Set a complete-system budget. Include a second Era 300, a Sonos soundbar, the Line-In Adapter, stands, cables, a phono preamp or a subwoofer if your plan requires them.
  7. Verify regional stock and current pricing. The quoted Cambridge and Sonos prices are dated US observations and may change; Cambridge’s product page may also redirect by region.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

Cambridge’s product pages provide detailed specifications and feature claims. Sonos’s product page provides its Atmos, driver, connectivity, app, Trueplay, materials and power claims. The independent listening account available for this comparison covers the L/R X at home over a couple of months; it reports useful room adjustment, sensitivity to placement and furnishings, large cabinets and a high price. It does not test the Era 300 in the same room or under the same conditions.

Consequently, there is no defensible universal sound-quality winner here. The L/R X’s 800 W figure should not be used to declare it superior, and the Era 300’s Atmos capability should not be used to promise that every recording will sound more immersive. Your source format, room, speaker count and existing equipment determine the practical result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Buy the Cambridge Audio L/R X when you want a serious, self-contained left/right stereo pair, direct HDMI eARC TV audio, a built-in MM phono stage, a subwoofer output and the widest selection of wired and network inputs. Buy the Sonos Era 300 when spatial audio, Dolby Atmos, Trueplay and Sonos multiroom or surround integration are more important than a conventional stereo layout and extensive physical connectivity.
