For a camera that connects directly to a television, the Sony BRAVIA Cam CMU-BC1 is the strongest documented choice—but only with specific compatible BRAVIA models and supported apps. If your television is not on Sony’s compatibility list, use a webcam with a computer connected to the TV; Logitech’s BRIO 4K is a flexible example of that arrangement.

“Cam TV” can also mean an older camera made for a particular television platform. A USB socket alone does not make a smart TV webcam-compatible. The TV model, camera, operating system, software, calling app, and region all have to work together.

Quick comparison: which TV camera setup fits?

Option Connection path Documented capabilities Best for Main limitation
Sony BRAVIA Cam CMU-BC1 Camera connected to a supported BRAVIA television Video chat and additional Sony camera features; optional accessory Owners of a listed BRAVIA model who want a TV-native setup Compatibility is limited to specified TV families, software and apps; other combinations are not guaranteed
Logitech BRIO 4K USB webcam connected to a computer; computer connected to the TV 4K at 30 fps, 1080p at 60 fps, 65°/78°/90° diagonal fields of view, autofocus, dual microphones and attachable privacy shutter Households that already have a computer and want broad calling-app choice Logitech documents this TV use through a computer, not universal direct USB operation on the television
Another USB camera Directly into the television only when the TV maker and app document support Depends on the exact camera and TV Readers who have verified a specific model-and-app combination A USB port by itself proves nothing; support may be absent or unguaranteed
Logitech TV Cam Connected to a Logitech Revue with Google TV 720p video, 5× digital zoom and two directional microphones Owners preserving that historical Revue setup Legacy hardware and Logitech Vid HD software; not a current general-purpose recommendation

There are no reliable cross-brand price or independent image-quality rankings in the available specifications. Check current stock and pricing in your country, and treat manufacturer specifications as capability claims rather than a guarantee of how a camera will look in your room.

Understand the three possible connection paths

1. A dedicated TV camera accessory

A dedicated accessory is designed for a defined television family. The TV supplies the operating system, app support, permissions and display, while the accessory supplies the camera and often the microphone. This is the cleanest arrangement when supported, because you do not need a separate computer on the coffee table. It is also the least forgiving: a camera that works on one model year may not work on another model with a similar name.

2. A camera plugged directly into the TV

Some televisions can recognize USB cameras, but recognition is not universal. The TV must have compatible drivers, a calling app that can use the camera, sufficient software support and, in some cases, a particular operating-system version. Sony states that some generic USB cameras and video-chat apps may work on Android, but it does not guarantee those combinations. Do not buy a generic webcam on the assumption that any smart-TV USB port will accept it.

3. A webcam operated by a computer

In this arrangement, the computer—not the television—runs Zoom, Teams, Meet or another calling service. The TV is simply a large display, connected by HDMI or another video connection. This route usually gives you the widest app and camera choice, and it is the practical fallback when your TV has no documented webcam support. It does require a computer, a suitable cable, power for the computer and a way to hear and control the call from your seating position.

Sony BRAVIA Cam CMU-BC1: the best-supported direct-TV option

Sony describes the BRAVIA Cam CMU-BC1 as an external, optional accessory for BRAVIA televisions. It supports video chat and additional Sony camera features. The CMU-BC1M version is included with only select television models, so an included camera and an optional camera are not interchangeable assumptions.

Sony’s compatibility information covers specified BRAVIA families from 2022 through 2025 and identifies series exclusions. Because the list is model-specific, the correct buying sequence is to find the full model number printed in the TV’s settings or on its label, open Sony’s current compatibility page for your region, and confirm that the exact model—not merely the series name—supports the CMU-BC1. Also verify that the calling app you intend to use is available on that television.

Sony’s USA support page, “What cameras can I use with a video chat app on a Google TV?” (last modified June 3, 2026), gives the relevant warning: “Some video chat apps may work with a USB camera for Android™, but Sony does not guarantee compatibility.” Its “BRAVIA CAM: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)” page (last modified February 10, 2026) calls the product “an optional accessory.” Those qualifications matter more than the presence of a USB connector.

What to check before buying the BRAVIA Cam

  • Exact BRAVIA model number and regional variant.
  • Whether the model is in Sony’s supported 2022–2025 families and not one of the listed exclusions.
  • Whether your desired video-chat application is offered for that TV’s software.
  • Whether the TV is running the software version required by Sony’s support instructions.
  • Whether your package needs the separately sold CMU-BC1 or already includes the CMU-BC1M.
  • Camera cable reach and a secure position at the top or front of the television.

How to set up a BRAVIA Cam

  1. Record the model. Write down the complete TV model code, including any regional suffix. Do not rely on a retail description that omits the suffix.
  2. Verify compatibility. Use Sony’s current support page for your country and confirm the camera, TV family, software requirements and any excluded series.
  3. Update the television. Install available system updates before troubleshooting the camera. A newly purchased accessory can fail to appear until the TV software is current.
  4. Mount the camera. Place it where faces are visible from the normal seating position. Keep the cable free of sharp bends and avoid a loose placement that can shift the framing.
  5. Connect and allow permissions. Follow the on-screen instructions for the TV and the calling app. If the app requests camera or microphone access, allow it only if you recognize the app and intend to use it.
  6. Run a test call. Check the preview, microphone level, speaker output and the view from the far end. Test at the same seating distance and room lighting you will use during real calls.

Logitech BRIO 4K: a flexible computer-to-TV setup

Logitech’s BRIO 4K specification lists 4K video at 30 frames per second and 1080p at 60 frames per second. It offers selectable 65°, 78° or 90° diagonal fields of view, autofocus, dual microphones and an attachable privacy shutter. Those numbers describe what the webcam can provide when the computer and calling software support the selected mode; they do not establish direct compatibility with every smart TV.

Logitech’s support guidance describes connecting BRIO to a USB-enabled computer running video-conferencing software, with that computer connected to the TV. The computer handles the camera driver, app and call. The television displays the computer’s output. This distinction prevents a common failure: plugging BRIO into the TV, seeing no camera option in the TV’s app and assuming the webcam is defective.

BRIO setup, step by step

  1. Choose the computer. Use a computer with a USB port, a supported operating system and the calling application you plan to run. Check that it can drive the TV at the desired display resolution.
  2. Connect the display. Connect the computer to the TV using the video input appropriate to both devices. Select that input on the TV.
  3. Connect BRIO to the computer. Plug the webcam into a direct USB port where possible rather than an unpowered hub. Allow the operating system to finish detecting it.
  4. Open the calling app on the computer. In the app’s camera and microphone settings, select BRIO rather than the computer’s built-in devices. The exact menu names differ by application.
  5. Select a practical video mode. Use 4K/30 when your computer, network and app support it and you want maximum detail. Use 1080p/60 when motion smoothness or lower processing load matters more. Many calls will be limited by the service’s own resolution cap.
  6. Choose the field of view. Start with 78°. Use 65° for a tighter single-person frame or 90° when two or more people need to fit. A wider number does not guarantee that a room will look flattering or that distant faces will be detailed.
  7. Test audio and privacy. Confirm that the dual microphones pick up speech from the seating position, close the physical shutter when the camera should be blocked, and make a short test call.

Why the old Logitech TV Cam is not a modern default

Logitech’s TV Cam specification sheet describes a 720p camera with 5× digital zoom and two directional microphones. It was built to plug into a Logitech Revue running Google TV and to use Logitech Vid HD. Those requirements make it a historical product for owners maintaining that exact setup, not a general solution for current smart televisions.

If a listing uses “TV Cam” to describe this older device, check that it includes the required Revue hardware and that the associated software still operates in your region. Do not treat its 720p specification as evidence that it will work with a current television’s built-in calling app.

Compatibility checklist before you spend money

Use this checklist for any camera, including a model not named above:

  • TV model: exact model code, model year, region and operating-system family.
  • Camera support: the television maker’s compatibility list or a documented computer-based setup.
  • Calling app: app name, supported TV version or computer version, and whether it can select an external camera.
  • Connection path: direct to TV, through a computer, or through a dedicated accessory. Keep these paths separate when reading specifications.
  • Power and cables: USB power, cable length, video cable from computer to TV and available ports.
  • Audio: microphone pickup distance, TV speaker behavior and whether echo cancellation is handled by the app.
  • Placement: stable mounting, unobstructed lens, camera height close to eye level and a view that includes everyone who will speak.
  • Privacy: physical shutter or cover, camera activity indicator and a habit of closing the lens when not in use.
  • Updates: current TV firmware, computer operating system, webcam software and calling app.

Framing, resolution and sound: choosing useful specifications

Field of view

A 65° diagonal view generally suits one person seated near the screen. A 78° view provides more breathing room, while 90° can include a pair or a small group. These are geometric angles, not a promise that every person will be sharp or well lit. Measure the distance from the camera to the seats and test the actual composition before a scheduled call.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resolution and frame rate

Higher resolution can preserve facial detail, but it increases processing and data requirements and may be reduced by the calling service. BRIO’s documented 4K/30 and 1080p/60 modes give you a choice between detail and motion smoothness. For a normal conversation, stable exposure, a clean lens and adequate light often matter more than selecting the largest number.

Autofocus and microphones

Autofocus helps when speakers move toward or away from the screen. Dual microphones can improve pickup compared with a single capsule, but room acoustics, distance and loudspeaker echo still determine intelligibility. Place the TV or computer so the microphone is not blocked by a soundbar, decorative object or cabinet edge.

Placement and privacy practices

  • Mount the camera centrally and close to eye level; a camera far below the screen creates an uncomfortable upward angle.
  • Keep a window or bright lamp behind the camera rather than behind the speaker to reduce silhouettes.
  • Leave enough cable slack for a clean route without pulling the camera out of alignment.
  • Use the BRIO’s attachable privacy shutter, or another physical cover, whenever the camera is not intentionally in use.
  • Review camera and microphone permissions after major TV or app updates.
  • Tell everyone in the room when a call is starting; a status light is helpful but should not be your only privacy control.

Troubleshooting common failures

The TV does not detect the camera

First determine whether you are attempting a direct-TV connection that the manufacturer actually supports. Try the documented port and update the TV software. If the model is not listed, stop treating the problem as a driver glitch: switch to a computer-mediated setup or a dedicated accessory that the TV maker supports. Sony specifically does not guarantee all generic USB camera and Android app combinations.

The camera appears, but the calling app cannot use it

Check that the app is installed for the TV or computer platform, that camera and microphone permissions are enabled, and that no other application is holding the camera. On a computer, select the webcam explicitly in the app’s device settings and close other video software before testing again.

The picture is too wide or cuts people off

Change the field-of-view setting where the camera supports it, then physically move the camera and seats rather than relying only on digital zoom. A 90° view can include more people but may show unwanted room space; a 65° view can look better for one speaker.

Audio echoes or sounds distant

Lower the TV volume, move the camera or microphone away from the speaker path, and test the app’s echo-cancellation setting. If the TV uses an external soundbar, ensure it is not blocking the microphone openings. A short recording from the intended seat is more informative than testing while standing beside the screen.

The image is dark, soft or unstable

Clean the lens, add light in front of the speakers, disable unnecessary backlighting and check that autofocus has a clear subject. Verify that the selected resolution and frame rate are supported by the computer, app and network; a fallback to 1080p can be more reliable than forcing a mode the call cannot sustain.

Cost, availability and support life

The available specifications do not establish current prices, stock or regional bundles. Check those at the time of purchase. The BRAVIA Cam’s cost must be considered alongside the TV’s eligibility and any software requirements. The BRIO setup may cost more in total if you need a computer, display cable or a separate stand, but it can avoid replacing an otherwise usable television. A legacy TV Cam may appear inexpensive second-hand while still requiring unavailable Revue hardware or software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Support can change after purchase. Save the exact TV and camera model numbers, keep receipts, and recheck the manufacturer’s compatibility page before a major software update or when changing calling apps.

Which setup should you choose?

  • You own a supported BRAVIA TV and want the fewest devices: choose the CMU-BC1 only after confirming the exact model, software and app support.
  • Your TV is unsupported or its app selection is limited: use a webcam such as BRIO with a computer connected to the TV.
  • You need a camera for several people: prioritize a suitable field of view, seating distance, front lighting and microphone placement over headline resolution.
  • You are considering a generic USB webcam: buy only when the TV maker and the intended app document that exact use; otherwise plan on a computer.
  • You found a Logitech TV Cam listing: treat it as a Revue/Google TV restoration project, not as a current plug-and-play TV camera.

What to verify on the day of an important call

  1. Turn on the TV, computer or accessory and install any pending updates well before the call.
  2. Confirm the selected camera and microphone in the calling app.
  3. Check framing from the normal seats, not from directly in front of the screen.
  4. Make a short test call or local recording to check exposure, focus, echo and delay.
  5. Keep the camera shutter closed when no call is active and have a backup phone or computer ready if the TV app fails.
