Callina Liang says playing Chun-Li in the new live-action Street Fighter film brought “a lot of pressure,” especially after she saw an online discussion questioning whether her physique could match the character’s famously powerful proportions. The concern was not only about appearance: Liang understood that Chun-Li is one of the most recognizable figures in video games and that longtime fans would judge whether the performance felt faithful, physically credible and unmistakably human.
Why the Chun-Li role carried unusual pressure
Capcom announced on September 5, 2025 that filming had begun on its live-action Street Fighter adaptation, with Liang cast as Chun-Li. The film is scheduled for release on October 16, 2026. Chun-Li’s status makes the casting unusually visible: she is a signature character from a long-running franchise, with a distinctive blue outfit, athletic silhouette, spinning kicks and a fighting style that audiences recognize immediately.
In an interview with Omelete published September 1, 2026, Liang described the opportunity as “very exciting, but it’s also a lot of pressure.” She had been a fan of Chun-Li since childhood and said she did not want to disappoint people who had grown up with the games, manga and anime.
GamesRadar+ quoted Liang explaining the emotional responsibility more directly: “I think because I was such a big fan of the character Chun-Li, and I knew that she’s such a beloved, iconic video game character, I just didn’t want to disappoint the fans.”

What Reddit reportedly said about her casting
A GamersExtra report said Liang encountered a Reddit thread asking whether her thighs could match Chun-Li’s powerful proportions. That detail should be treated as a reported online reaction rather than proof of a broad public consensus: no authoritative survey or representative statistic establishes how widely that view was held.
Even so, the comment illustrates the specific standard attached to Chun-Li. The character is often drawn with exceptionally developed legs because her signature attacks depend on speed, balance and kicking power. A performer can be an excellent martial artist without reproducing an animation model exactly, but fans may still compare the costume, stance, movement and body shape with the source material.
How Liang prepared for the physical demands
Liang had at most about three months between being cast and beginning filming, according to her Omelete interview. She trained every day, combined gym work with fight practice and weightlifting, and researched Chun-Li across the games, manga and anime. She also said she consumed around 4,000 calories per day during the preparation period.

CNA described the sprint as roughly two and a half months of intensive work. Its report said Liang trained for two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon, ate every couple of hours and consumed 12 eggs a day. CNA also reported that she gained about 20 pounds (9 kilograms) in a month and a half.
GamesRadar+ reported that her thigh measurement increased by more than 6.5 centimeters. These figures describe Liang’s preparation for this production, not a general training prescription. Rapid weight gain, a high-calorie diet and multiple daily sessions require professional supervision, recovery planning and individual medical assessment; they should not be copied as a standard route to a fictional character’s physique.

Making the fighting look like Chun-Li
The physical transformation was only one part of the assignment. GamesRadar+ reported that Liang studied every Chun-Li move from the game series. That approach matters because game attacks are not simply generic kicks: players associate the character with particular rhythms, poses and combinations.

Philstar reported that the film’s fight design draws on Wu Shu, Tai Chi and kung fu while preserving recognizable game moves. Jon Valera, quoted by Philstar, called the responsibility “the Bruce Lee effect,” saying that Street Fighter is close to sacred for martial artists and that the fear of mishandling it creates a higher standard of work.
The adaptation therefore has to solve two problems at once. The choreography must be safe and functional for a live performer, yet it must also include visual signatures that tell viewers they are watching Chun-Li rather than an unrelated fighter. Liang’s research and conditioning support the performance, while the stunt and fight teams shape how those skills appear on camera.
What fans are likely to judge in the finished performance
Liang’s comments point to three practical tests for the film:

- Physical and martial-arts credibility: kicks, footwork, balance and impact should look powerful enough to justify the character’s reputation.
- A human interpretation: Liang still has to play a person with motives and emotion, not reproduce an animation model pose by pose.
Those standards can pull in different directions. A literal recreation may satisfy a screenshot comparison but feel stiff in a dramatic scene; a naturalistic performance may work as acting while disappointing viewers who want every game reference. The production’s use of Wu Shu, Tai Chi and kung fu suggests an attempt to keep the movement grounded while retaining familiar motifs.

Yes. Capcom’s September 5, 2025 announcement identifies Callina Liang as Chun-Li and says filming had started. The same official release gives the movie’s planned October 16, 2026 theatrical release date. Release plans can change, so viewers should check later Capcom announcements for regional scheduling or updates.

Where the game fits into the film connection
Chun-Li’s source identity comes from Capcom’s game series, and Capcom lists Street Fighter 6 for PlayStation 5 in the same official release material that identifies Liang’s role. The game is the clearest current way to see the character’s modern moves and visual design while waiting for the film. No authorized physical movie release or collectible listing was established in the available information, so future Blu-ray, soundtrack, figure or costume announcements should be verified through official licensing and retailer listings.
What Liang says she owed the audience
Liang told GamesRadar+: “I mean, really, this whole movie – everybody put everything into it. It’s made by fans, for fans. I was just like, I’ve got to give it my all and have no regrets, and that’s why I tried everything I could.”
That statement explains why a single Reddit comment could feel consequential without proving that Reddit represented all fans. Liang was measuring herself against a beloved character, a demanding physical brief and a franchise whose audience knows Chun-Li’s movements by memory. Her reported training numbers show the scale of that effort; whether it succeeds on screen will depend on the combination of performance, choreography, costume and the film’s story.
