There is no universal winner. Choose darktable if you need a database-backed library with collections, filtering and a lighttable/darkroom workflow. Choose RawTherapee if your priority is dedicated RAW processing, demosaicing and specialized adjustments. Choose CalibRaw if you want a Lightroom-style, non-destructive editor with GPU processing and a stated Linux, Android, Windows and macOS target. Before committing a complete archive, verify current camera, profile and operating-system support and process representative files from your own cameras.
Quick answer: match the application to the job
These projects describe different emphases rather than three interchangeable Lightroom clones. darktable presents itself as a RAW editor plus a database-backed image-management environment. RawTherapee presents itself as a cross-platform RAW-processing system, with particular attention to demosaicing and specialized RAW operations. CalibRaw describes a free, non-destructive, GPU-accelerated RAW editor organized around a Lightroom-style workflow.

darktable: a catalog and development environment
darktable’s overview describes a database-backed image-management system combined with RAW development. Its documented workflow separates a lighttable, where you organize and review images, from a darkroom, where you develop them. The feature list includes collection filtering and sorting, tethered shooting, color management, multiple input and output formats and export tools. This makes darktable the clearest fit in the available documentation for someone who wants the application itself to maintain an organized photo library rather than simply open and process individual files. It does not mean every photographer will prefer its catalog model, or that its processing tools will suit every style.
RawTherapee: processing-first RAW software
RawTherapee’s project home calls it a cross-platform RAW processing system and highlights demosaicing and specialized RAW operations. That emphasis is useful when your decision starts with questions such as how a particular sensor pattern is interpreted, which conversion controls are available, or how much adjustment depth you want before exporting a rendered file. Read the project’s current description at rawtherapee.com.
The supplied project material does not establish a library-management feature set equivalent to darktable’s database, lighttable, collection filters or sorting. Therefore, do not infer that RawTherapee lacks organization features; instead, treat library depth as something to inspect in the current release and test against your own filing system.
CalibRaw: a stated Lightroom-style workflow
CalibRaw describes itself as a free, non-destructive, GPU-accelerated RAW editor with a Lightroom-style workflow. Its project description also highlights color tools and advanced demosaicing. The listed targets are Linux, Android, Windows and macOS. Those are project claims, not independent performance measurements or a guarantee that every camera and GPU works on every listed platform. Consult the CalibRaw repository for current builds and requirements.
The broad platform list can make CalibRaw attractive if you move between a computer and Android device. It should not, by itself, decide an archive migration: mobile hardware, driver support, camera formats and synchronization expectations can change the practical workflow.
Library organization: decide whether you need a catalog
When a database-backed library matters
If you want one application to hold a searchable view of a large collection, darktable’s documented database and lighttable are directly relevant. Collection filtering and sorting let you narrow what you see before entering the darkroom for development. Tethered shooting and export tools are also listed among its features, which may matter for studio or repeatable delivery workflows. These capabilities describe the project’s design; they do not tell you how quickly your own archive will scan or how much storage it will consume.

Before importing an established archive, decide which information must survive: folders, ratings, color labels, keywords, develop settings and exported versions are different kinds of data. A catalog can organize those items differently from the application you currently use. Make a copy of the archive and test a small branch first.

When folders and a separate organizer are acceptable
A processing-first workflow can be perfectly workable when your folder structure, file naming and backup system already provide the organization you need. The available RawTherapee and CalibRaw descriptions do not provide enough evidence to compare their library-management depth with darktable’s. If catalog functions are central to your day-to-day work, test importing, searching, rating, filtering and revisiting edits rather than judging from the editor window alone.
A practical library test
- Create a temporary test set containing a few hundred RAW files arranged the way your real archive is arranged, including multiple cameras, dates and folders.
- Check whether the application can add that set without moving the originals or changing your backup layout.
- Try the tasks you perform every week: find a date range, isolate one camera, mark keepers, return to a previous edit and export a selected group.
- Close and reopen the application, then confirm that the organization and edits remain available.
- Only after this test should you consider adding the full archive.
RAW processing: identify the controls you actually use
RawTherapee for a processing-led workflow
RawTherapee’s own description puts RAW processing, demosaicing and specialized operations at the center. That is a sensible first candidate if you spend most of your time refining sensor data and less time searching a catalog. Evaluate it with difficult files from your cameras: high-ISO scenes, fine repeating detail, high-contrast edges and images that need careful highlight or color recovery. The purpose is not to declare a winner from a single file, but to see whether the controls and defaults fit your method.
darktable’s broad development and export toolset
darktable’s feature documentation lists a broad processing and export toolkit, alongside color management and varied input and output formats. Its lighttable/darkroom division can reduce the need to switch between a catalog application and a RAW editor. The trade-off is that a broad, modular toolbox may require more decisions about how your workflow is assembled.
CalibRaw’s GPU and color emphasis
CalibRaw highlights GPU processing, color tools and advanced demosaicing in its project description. If your computer has a supported graphics processor, test whether the application behaves reliably with your files and display. A feature label is not a benchmark: the project material does not establish processing speed, image-quality superiority or hardware coverage for a particular GPU.

For each candidate, process the same representative images and record the settings needed to reach your normal result. Check edge detail at 100 percent, smooth gradients, skin tones or other subjects important to you, and the appearance of exported files in the applications where you publish or print. Keep the original RAW files untouched so you can repeat the comparison after an update.

Camera profiles, color management and DCP limitations
Profile requirements can eliminate an otherwise suitable application. darktable’s official FAQ states that it does not support DCP camera profiles and recommends RawTherapee or ART when DCP support matters. Read the qualification in the darktable FAQ and verify current behavior in the alternative you choose; the recommendation is not a guarantee for every DCP or camera.
Ask yourself what “profile support” means in your workflow. You may need a manufacturer camera profile, a custom DCP, a display profile, a standard color-managed export or simply consistent rendering across machines. Test the exact profile file, camera model and output format you use. If the profile cannot be loaded or produces a different interpretation than expected, document a fallback before converting a large archive.
Platform and device compatibility
CalibRaw’s stated targets
CalibRaw’s project page lists Linux, Android, Windows and macOS. That breadth is useful for a mixed-device workflow, but “listed platform” is not the same as “supported on every version.” Check the repository’s current release notes, installation requirements, GPU expectations and camera coverage for each device you plan to use.
darktable’s current platform notes
The darktable repository lists Linux, BSD variants, Windows 10 and later, and Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14 and later among its current platform notes. The repository is the appropriate place to confirm changes and build details: darktable on GitHub. A listed operating system does not guarantee that an older computer, graphics driver or camera file will work without testing.
RawTherapee’s cross-platform description
RawTherapee calls itself cross-platform, but the supplied project material does not enumerate current supported operating-system versions. Use the project’s download and documentation pages for the release you intend to install, and verify that release against your operating system and camera model.
Camera support is a separate check
RAW formats are tied to camera models and sometimes to firmware or release dates. Download or create sample files from every camera you use, including older bodies and unusual modes. Confirm that thumbnails, metadata, previews, demosaicing and export all work. Do not assume that support for one model from a manufacturer implies support for another.

Learning curve and transfer from Lightroom
darktable’s FAQ explicitly warns that it is not a direct Lightroom replacement. The project says that treating it as a direct replacement is a mistake, describes a steep learning curve and notes that little workflow knowledge transfers automatically from other software. Its presets and styles are program-specific, and importing Lightroom edits is described as limited and unreliable. The FAQ’s wording is worth reading directly, including this statement: “Darktable is an alternative to Lightroom the same way any other raw editor is, since it edits raw files, but it would be a mistake to think it’s a direct replacement.”

That warning is about expectations, not a verdict against darktable. Someone who values a catalog and is willing to learn a new toolbox may find the design appropriate. Someone who expects existing Lightroom adjustments, presets or catalog behavior to appear unchanged should plan a gradual transition and preserve the old system until the new workflow is proven.
The available evidence does not support ranking CalibRaw, RawTherapee and darktable from easiest to hardest. Their interfaces, defaults and documentation may suit different kinds of learners. Measure the learning burden by performing a complete small job: ingest or open files, cull, adjust, save non-destructively, export, find the images again and recover from a mistake.

Choose darktable first when library work comes first
- You need database-backed organization rather than only a folder browser.
- You routinely filter and sort collections before editing.
- You want lighttable review and darkroom development in one application.
- You can allocate time to learn a program-specific toolbox and accept that Lightroom edits may not import reliably.
Confirm the current build for your operating system and test your archive structure before making it the system of record.
Choose RawTherapee first when conversion control comes first
- Your main work is RAW development and careful demosaicing.
- You need specialized processing operations and are comfortable organizing files with your existing folders or another catalog.
- You require DCP support and have verified that the current release handles your exact profile workflow.
Because the supplied project description does not establish a darktable-equivalent catalog, evaluate the organization tools you personally need instead of assuming either presence or absence.

A low-risk evaluation plan
- Inventory your requirements. Write down your cameras, operating systems, GPU, required profiles, catalog tasks, export destinations and any Lightroom settings you must retain.
- Collect representative files. Include RAW files from every camera, challenging lighting, metadata, sidecars if you use them, and a few finished exports for visual reference.
- Check the current documentation. Start with the CalibRaw repository, darktable overview/features/FAQ and RawTherapee project pages linked above. Releases and platform support can change after this article’s research date.
- Install without changing the master archive. Use a copy of your test files and keep existing catalogs, sidecars and exports backed up.
- Run the same workflow in each candidate. Organize or open files, select keepers, apply a basic correction, revisit the edit, export and locate the result again.
- Test failure recovery. Close the application during a non-critical test, restore a file from backup and confirm you understand where edits, databases and exports are stored.
- Decide on migration scope. If one tool fits, move a small date range first. Keep the original archive and previous application available until you have verified searches, edits and exports.
Common decision traps
“Free” does not mean identical to Lightroom
All three are free-software choices in this comparison, but free licensing does not make their catalogs, controls, presets or interchange formats equivalent. Compare the workflow you need, not the absence of a purchase price.
A long feature list is not a quality test
GPU acceleration, advanced demosaicing, color management and export options are useful capabilities to investigate. They are not evidence that one application produces better images or runs faster on your machine. Only your files and hardware can answer that for your workflow.
Do not migrate before testing interoperability
RAW edits are usually application-specific instructions rather than pixels embedded in the original file. darktable specifically cautions that Lightroom-edit import is limited and unreliable, and its styles and presets are program-specific. Preserve rendered exports and original RAW files so you can reproduce important work even when settings do not transfer.
Do not equate a platform list with a complete device guarantee
CalibRaw’s four listed platforms and darktable’s repository notes are useful filters, not a promise that every release, driver, camera or GPU is supported. RawTherapee’s cross-platform description likewise requires a release-specific check.
Decision checklist
- Do I need a database, collections, filtering and sorting inside the RAW application?
- Are demosaicing and specialized RAW controls more important than catalog features?
- Do I need Linux, Android, Windows, macOS, BSD, or a specific macOS and Windows version?
- Which camera models and RAW formats must open today?
- Do I depend on DCP camera profiles or another exact color workflow?
- Can I accept a steep, program-specific learning curve?
- Which Lightroom edits, presets, ratings and keywords must survive, and how will I preserve those that cannot be imported?
- Have I tested the same representative files and exports in the application I plan to adopt?
Bottom line
For a catalog-centered Lightroom alternative, start with darktable and test its database, lighttable and darkroom workflow against your archive. For a RAW-processing-centered workflow, start with RawTherapee and verify demosaicing, specialized controls and DCP requirements. For a Lightroom-style editor spanning the platforms CalibRaw lists, evaluate CalibRaw on the exact desktop, Android device, camera files and GPU you use. The right choice is the one that passes your library, profile, compatibility and learning-curve tests—not a universal ranking.
