To put pictures from your iPhone on a computer, either import them with a USB cable or use iCloud Photos to sync them. Use a cable for a one-time copy; use iCloud for ongoing access across devices. The steps differ slightly on a Mac and a Windows PC.
Choose the right transfer method

For a wired transfer, check that the cable supports data and that its connectors fit both your iPhone and computer. Apple’s instructions for Windows use Apple Devices to prepare the connection and Microsoft Photos to import the pictures; these are complementary steps, not competing import apps.
Import photos from iPhone to a Mac with a cable
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a compatible USB cable. If the iPhone asks whether to allow the accessory, approve it.
- Unlock the iPhone. If asked, tap Trust and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Open the Photos app on the Mac. If the import screen does not appear automatically, select the iPhone in the Photos sidebar.
- Select the photos you want to import and choose a destination album if desired.
- Wait for the import to finish before disconnecting the iPhone.
If you want files saved directly to a Mac folder rather than imported into Photos, Apple also lists Image Capture as an import option. For a few selected items, AirDrop is another option: select the photos on the iPhone, tap the share button, then choose the nearby Mac.

Import photos from iPhone to a Windows PC
- Install Apple Devices from the Microsoft Store, as Apple instructs.
- Connect the iPhone to the PC using a file-transfer-capable USB cable.
- Unlock the iPhone and tap Trust or Allow if prompted.
- Open Photos in Windows, select Import, then choose the connected device.
- Follow the prompts to select the pictures and the folder where you want them saved. Wait for the import to complete before unplugging the phone.

Use iCloud Photos for access across devices
When iCloud Photos is enabled, your library syncs to supported Apple devices, iCloud.com, and Windows. Once syncing has completed, you do not need to import the same photos from one iCloud-connected device to another simply to make them available there. This is syncing, not a separate local backup.

iCloud Photos uses iCloud storage, so check that you have enough capacity for your library. On Windows, photos stored in iCloud but not downloaded to the iPhone may not appear in a USB import; access those items through iCloud for Windows instead.
Fix common transfer problems
The computer does not detect the iPhone
- Unlock the iPhone and respond to any Trust, Allow, or accessory prompt.
- Check that the cable supports data transfer, not just charging. If the phone still is not detected, try another data-capable cable.
- On a Windows PC, make sure Apple Devices is installed before connecting and importing through Photos.
Some photos are missing from a Windows cable import
If iCloud Photos is on, some pictures may be stored in iCloud rather than on the iPhone. Apple says a Windows USB import requires the full-resolution originals to be downloaded to the iPhone first. Download those originals before importing, or access cloud-stored photos through iCloud for Windows.

Photos open poorly or are incompatible on Windows
For photos and videos you capture in the future, Apple says you can go to Settings > Camera > Formats on the iPhone and select Most Compatible. This makes future captures JPEG and H.264 for Windows compatibility; it does not convert files already captured.
