A cable modem’s local status page can show downstream and upstream power levels, channel locks, registration status, and event-log entries that line up with an internet outage. Those readings can help you give your ISP useful evidence, but they do not identify the cause of every drop on their own. The page, its address, and the information it exposes vary by modem and provider.

First, confirm what kind of connection and equipment you have

This guide is for cable broadband: service delivered over coaxial cable to a cable modem or cable gateway. A DSL modem, fiber ONT, fixed-wireless unit, or cellular gateway uses different diagnostics and may not have the same pages or fields. Check your provider’s app or device guide for those connections.

Note the make and model printed on your modem or gateway. An ISP-provided gateway may use a provider-managed app or interface, and local access may be limited. If the provider’s help page gives instructions for your exact equipment, use those rather than assuming another manufacturer’s menu applies.

Open the modem’s local status page

Connect a phone or computer to your home network, then follow the management-address and sign-in instructions for your model. For supported NETGEAR cable modem and modem-router models, NETGEAR documents http://192.168.100.1 as the address; it is not a universal address for all cable equipment. TP-Link directs users to their model’s manual for login details. Page names and access methods can differ even between devices from the same manufacturer.

  • 💡 SETUP REQUIREMENTS: You need: (1) Cable internet service, (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation. This modem cannot create WiFi networks or connect multiple devices without additional equipment.

Use the credentials on the device label or in its current manual, or the credentials set by your provider. Do not assume that generic default credentials apply. If the login page does not load, check that you are connected to the home network, confirm the model-specific address, and consult the ISP or manufacturer’s instructions. If your ISP manages the gateway and has disabled local access, ask support how to view or obtain the equivalent diagnostics.

Record the readings that help explain a drop

Look for a page called Cable Connection, Connection, Status, or something similar. Capture the information available on your model, preferably with a screenshot that includes the page context.

Hitron CODA56 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem ONLY (NOT Fiber) | 2.5 Gbps | NO WiFi/Voice/Router | Single Ethernet Port | Xfinity/Spectrum/Cox Compatible | Requires Separate WiFi Router
  • ⚠️ CABLE INTERNET ONLY - This modem works ONLY with cable internet providers (Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox). NOT compatible with fiber internet services including AT&T Fiber, Verizon Fios, Frontier Fiber, Google Fiber, or CenturyLink Fiber. Check with your ISP to confirm you have cable (coaxial) service before purchasing.
  • 📞 DATA ONLY - NO PHONE SERVICE - This modem does NOT support telephone or voice service of any kind. If your internet plan includes phone service or you need VoIP calling, you must purchase a separate voice-capable modem or VoIP adapter. This device handles internet data only.”
  • 🚀 MULTI-GIG PERFORMANCE: Supports internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. Designed for plans 1 Gbps and faster from certified CABLE providers: Xfinity (up to 2 Gbps), Spectrum (1 Gbps), Cox (2 Gbps). NOT compatible with fiber internet services. Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.
  • 🔌 MODEM ONLY - NO WIFI INCLUDED - This device is a cable modem with ONE Ethernet port only. It does NOT provide WiFi or wireless connectivity. You MUST connect your own separate WiFi router to this modem to create a wireless network. This is not an all-in-one gateway or combo unit.
  • ⚡ DOCSIS 3.1 TECHNOLOGY: Latest cable standard with 32x8 channel bonding for reliable multi-gig speeds. Backward compatible with DOCSIS 3.0 networks. Eliminates monthly modem rental fees (typically $14-20/month). For CABLE internet only - verify compatibility with your cable provider.
  • Downstream and upstream power: Record the displayed values and units for each channel, not just one number or an average.
  • SNR or MER: Save these signal-quality readings if the page provides them.
  • Channel lock and bonding: Note how many channels show as locked or bonded and whether any are missing or unlocked.
  • Registration state: Record whether the modem appears registered or online.
  • Correctable and uncorrectable counters: Capture them if shown, along with the modem’s uptime. A lifetime total by itself is hard to interpret; whether the counters rise while the connection is failing is more useful.

NETGEAR publishes “good” guidance of -7 to +7 dBmV for downstream power and 38–48 dBmV for upstream power. These are NETGEAR’s guidance, not universal pass/fail limits for every modem, channel, DOCSIS version, firmware, or ISP. A reading outside those ranges is a reason to share the information with your provider, not proof by itself that a particular component has failed.

Check the event log for entries near the outage

Open the event log and note the timestamp and exact wording of entries that recur around a drop. Do not clear the log before saving it. NETGEAR explains that its cable modems keep event logs with information about the modem’s connection to the ISP; TP-Link’s support workflow asks customers to provide system information, downstream and upstream bonded-channel details, and the SNMP event log.

What T3 and T4 timeouts can tell you

A T3 timeout is a DOCSIS ranging event; CableLabs defines the event as “No Ranging Response received.” NETGEAR describes upstream noise or power constraints as a typical T3 context. A T4 timeout means the modem received a response to a broadcast maintenance request but did not receive unicast maintenance opportunities. NETGEAR associates a T4 timeout with temporary service loss. Repeated T3 or T4 entries that coincide with drops deserve attention from your ISP.

Neither message names the failed part. The cause could involve coax wiring in the home, the outside cable plant, provider equipment, configuration, or the modem. A modem log is one view of a larger cable network, not a complete diagnosis.

Make the evidence useful to support

When practical, capture the status page and log during or soon after an interruption, then compare them with a working period. Include the following details when you contact your ISP:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Modem or gateway make and model.
  • Approximate drop times and the corresponding log timestamps and exact recurring messages.
  • Whether the issue affects a wired connection as well as Wi-Fi, or only wireless devices.
  • Whether the modem reboots or loses channel locks, and whether its uptime resets.
  • Whether the provider reports an outage in your area.

Ask the provider to check the line and correlate the timestamps with its network-side diagnostics. Cisco’s troubleshooting guidance includes checks on the cable modem termination system (CMTS), illustrating why the local status page cannot show every factor the provider may need to investigate.

Know what the page cannot diagnose

The modem’s status page reports information about the cable connection and the modem’s own events. It does not measure Wi-Fi quality in every room, test every device, or establish whether DNS, an application server, or other provider-side equipment is responsible for a particular symptom. If only Wi-Fi devices disconnect while a wired connection remains stable, report that distinction; it points to a different layer of troubleshooting than a modem losing its cable connection.

Persistent drops, recurring T3/T4 timeouts, unlocked channels, or readings your provider considers abnormal warrant an ISP line check. Provider-side maintenance may be needed. Avoid opening the modem, changing DOCSIS settings, or treating a replacement modem as the default fix: first give the ISP the timestamps and readings so it can investigate the connection.
