The Union Cabinet approved a Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) equal to 78 days of wages for eligible railway employees on 14 October 2026. The decision covers 1,140,770 employees, carries a total outlay of ₹2,009.61 crore and sets the maximum individual payment at ₹17,951.
What the 2026 railway PLB decision includes
The approved bonus is based on 78 days of wages for eligible non-gazetted railway employees. The government’s announcement covers about 11.40 lakh staff across operational, technical, supervisory and ministerial roles.
| Item | 2026 approval |
|---|---|
| Bonus duration | 78 days of wages |
| Total government outlay | ₹2,009.61 crore |
| Employees covered | 1,140,770 |
| Maximum individual payment | ₹17,951 |
| Payment timing | Before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays; no exact date was announced |
The ₹17,951 figure is the maximum payable to an eligible employee under the approved PLB. An employee’s actual amount depends on the applicable bonus calculation and eligibility conditions.

Who is covered by the 78-day bonus
The Cabinet announcement identifies eligible non-gazetted railway employees, including:
#1 Best Overall
- Track maintainers
- Loco pilots
- Train managers, formerly called guards
- Station masters
- Supervisors
- Technicians and technician helpers
- Pointsmen
- Ministerial staff
- Other Group C employees
The latest available Railway Board order for 2024-25 describes PLB eligibility for non-gazetted employees and excludes Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) personnel. Because the 14 October 2026 announcement does not restate every detailed rule, those conditions should be treated as standing rules from the Railway Board order, not as newly announced changes for 2026.
How the wage ceiling affects calculation
The 2024-25 Railway Board order states that when an employee’s wages exceed ₹7,000 per month, the bonus is calculated as though the wage were ₹7,000. The 2026 Cabinet release confirms the 78-day duration and the maximum payment but does not publish a different wage ceiling.

When railway employees will receive the PLB
PLB is paid every year before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays. The 2026 release does not give a specific disbursement date, so employees should rely on the payment schedule issued through the railway administration rather than assuming a particular day.
The government describes the annual pre-festival payment as an incentive intended to motivate railway employees to improve railway performance.

Why the Cabinet approved the bonus
The government linked the 2026 decision to strong Indian Railways performance during 2025-26. According to Ministry of Railways and Press Information Bureau figures, the railway system loaded a record 1,670 million tonnes of cargo and carried nearly 7.41 billion passengers.
- Freight: 1,670 million tonnes loaded, a record cited for 2025-26.
- Passenger traffic: nearly 7.41 billion passengers carried during the same performance period.
The PLB is therefore presented as a performance-linked incentive for the workforce that operates, maintains and administers the railway network.

How the 2026 approval compares with 2025
The Cabinet approved the same 78-day duration and the same ₹17,951 maximum in September 2025. The main changes in the 2026 announcement are the larger outlay and a higher stated beneficiary count.
| Measure | 2025 approval | 2026 approval | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bonus duration | 78 days | 78 days | No change |
| Total outlay | ₹1,865.68 crore | ₹2,009.61 crore | Increase of ₹143.93 crore |
| Beneficiary employees | 1,091,146 | 1,140,770 | Increase of 49,624 |
| Maximum individual payment | ₹17,951 | ₹17,951 | No change |
| Payment timing | Before Durga Puja/Dussehra | Before Durga Puja/Dussehra | No change stated |
The higher 2026 outlay follows the increase in employees covered in the announcement; it does not represent an increase in the 78-day entitlement or the maximum individual amount.
Quick Recap
What employees should check
- Confirm that your post and employment status fall within the eligible non-gazetted categories.
- Check whether your personnel record is subject to the RPF/RPSF exclusion in the applicable Railway Board rules.
- Review the wage basis used by your railway unit, including the ₹7,000 calculation ceiling stated in the 2024-25 order.
- Watch for the official unit-level payment notice, since the Cabinet release gives no exact 2026 transfer date.
