If the C, V, B, N, and M keys on your keyboard have stopped working, the pattern alone does not identify the cause. Test each key in a plain text field, then compare the built-in keyboard with a separate keyboard. Those checks help distinguish a keyboard-specific problem from an input setting or a broader software issue.
First, identify what the keys are doing
Open a plain text field and press C, V, B, N, and M individually. Note the result for each key before changing settings: no input, a different character, a number, a delayed response, or repeated characters. This symptom-based check is useful because manufacturer troubleshooting guidance treats unresponsive keys, unexpected output, and slow response as different problems; the five-key pattern by itself does not establish a diagnosis.
Compare the built-in keyboard with another keyboard
If you have a separate keyboard, connect it to the same computer and test the same keys in the same text field. If the separate keyboard works but the laptop’s built-in keyboard does not, that points toward a problem with the built-in keyboard or its connection, but it does not prove which component has failed. HP also recommends testing a keyboard on another computer when investigating unexpected behavior. See HP’s wired-keyboard troubleshooting guidance.
If both keyboards produce the same incorrect characters, focus first on the selected input language and keyboard layout. If neither registers the affected keys, continue with the checks below and consult the computer maker’s guidance for your exact model.

Match settings checks to the symptom
Letters produce numbers
Some laptops have an embedded numeric keypad that can make certain letter keys produce numbers when NumLock is enabled. Check whether your model has this feature and whether NumLock is on. ASUS and MSI document this check for numeric output from letter keys: ASUS notebook keyboard troubleshooting and MSI notebook keyboard troubleshooting. A NumLock check is relevant when letters turn into numbers; it is not a general fix for keys that produce no input.
The keys produce different letters or symbols
Verify the selected input language and keyboard layout in your operating system. A layout mismatch can change the character produced by a key. Check this when output is wrong, rather than assuming it explains keys that do not respond at all. ASUS and MSI include language or layout checks in their keyboard troubleshooting guidance.

Response is delayed or keys seem insensitive
On a Windows device, check whether Filter Keys is enabled. ASUS identifies this setting as a possible reason for delayed keyboard response. The exact location can vary by Windows version, so use Windows Settings search for “Filter Keys” and follow the option shown for your version. This check is most relevant when a key responds slowly or only after being held, not when it consistently produces an unrelated character.

If the problem persists, use the computer manufacturer’s support instructions for the exact model and operating system. For supported notebooks, ASUS’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance includes updating BIOS, Windows packages, and drivers, and then uninstalling keyboard devices in Device Manager and restarting so Windows can install the driver again. MSI also documents BIOS and driver troubleshooting for notebook keyboard abnormalities. These are model-specific procedures, not universal instructions; confirm the applicable steps on the manufacturer’s support page before changing firmware or device software.

If a separate keyboard works on the same computer but the built-in keys still fail after the relevant settings checks and manufacturer-directed troubleshooting, contact the computer maker or a qualified repair provider. The exact computer model is needed to determine whether a replacement keyboard is compatible. Lenovo’s keyboard guidance, for example, applies to specified IdeaPad and ThinkPad systems running Windows 10 or 11; it should not be treated as a universal repair guide: Lenovo keyboard troubleshooting.
