Bytes #511, published August 11, 2026, uses Ryan Dahl’s celld project to make Cloudflare Durable Objects easier to understand. The central idea is a named, stateful unit of compute: requests from different places can reach the same logical object, which can coordinate work using attached, strongly consistent storage. celld takes inspiration from that model but runs as a self-hosted system, so the operator—not Cloudflare—runs the underlying fleet and its supporting infrastructure.
What Bytes #511 says a Durable Object is
The issue opens with the question “So… what’s a durable object?” and approaches it through celld, a project that implements Cloudflare-compatible Workers and Durable Objects APIs. Its simplified analogy is a worker process paired with SQLite state and replicated storage outside the machine. That picture helps explain the basic shape, but it is an analogy rather than a complete description of Cloudflare’s service.
Cloudflare describes Durable Objects as a building block for stateful applications and distributed systems. Each object combines compute with attached durable storage, and a globally unique name gives an application a way to route requests from around the world to the same logical object. Cloudflare says the attached storage is strongly consistent and fast to access. Cloudflare’s Durable Objects documentation describes the model and its capabilities.
In practical terms, a Durable Object can serve as a coordination point. Rather than having many independent requests update a shared record without coordination, an application can direct related work to one named object and let it manage the shared state. The object can start when needed and shut down when idle, according to Cloudflare’s overview.

Why the model is useful
A regular stateless Worker is a natural fit when requests can be handled independently. A Durable Object becomes useful when multiple clients or events need to coordinate around shared, current state. Cloudflare’s examples include collaborative editing, chat, multiplayer games and live notifications.
- Collaborative editing: a shared object can coordinate updates to a document or session.
- Chat and live notifications: an object can keep track of active participants and coordinate messages or events.
- Multiplayer games: shared game state can be managed in a common place for the players interacting with it.
These are examples of workload patterns, not a requirement to use Durable Objects for every application with data. If requests do not need a shared coordination point, a stateless Worker or a conventional database-backed design may be simpler. The choice depends on how the application’s state is accessed and updated.
What celld adds—and what it changes
celld presents itself as a self-hosted system with Cloudflare-compatible Workers and Durable Objects APIs. Its project page, accessed October 7, 2026, identifies the release as v0.6.1 beta and lists support for Workers, Durable Objects, KV, Queues, D1, R2, Workflows, Cron and static assets; Containers are marked experimental. The project page also describes per-cell SQLite databases, shared bucket storage, cell ownership leases and failover across instances. See celld’s project page for its current release and compatibility details.

The important distinction is deployment and responsibility. Cloudflare operates its hosted service. With celld, the operator supplies and manages the machines, network, bucket provider and fleet. celld says its system does not provide Cloudflare-specific capabilities such as Cloudflare’s network, GPUs or browser farm, and that workloads depending on those capabilities are out of scope.

API compatibility is useful, but it does not establish identical behavior or guarantees. Before choosing celld, verify that the specific APIs and bindings your application needs are supported, and account for the work of operating, observing and troubleshooting the system yourself.
How to read celld’s performance and durability figures
celld reports measurements on its own site; these are project-reported results, not independent benchmarks or Cloudflare service guarantees. The project describes a durability test using four-vCPU, 8 GB nodes and a bucket in the same region. It says it stops a loaded node with SIGKILL, then verifies rooms after recovery. Its speed and density figures come from a one-node test on an Apple M-series laptop over loopback.
Rank #4
| Project-reported result | Conditions and qualification |
|---|---|
| Zero acknowledged writes lost in the described node-kill test | celld’s own test description; fleet of four-vCPU, 8 GB nodes and a same-region bucket. Not an independent result. |
| About 90 ms durable-write latency | celld reports a one-node, region-local setup. |
| About 20 seconds to fail over after node loss, with zero lost writes in the stated test | celld’s project-reported failure test; not a hosted-service comparison. |
| About 0.2 ms p50 and 0.3 ms p99 stateless request latency | celld’s warm speed test on a one-node Apple M-series laptop over loopback. |
The setups are not comparable to Cloudflare’s hosted service, and the measurements do not establish that either deployment is faster or more reliable for a particular application. Treat them as details of celld’s stated tests, then evaluate the conditions that matter for your workload: region placement, traffic, storage provider, failure recovery and operational monitoring.

- Who operates it? A hosted service places infrastructure operation with the provider; self-hosting puts fleet, networking and storage decisions on your team.
- Does your application need a specific platform capability? Check required APIs, bindings and integrations against celld’s compatibility information, including its stated exclusions.
- How will you diagnose problems? celld describes inspecting ownership records, SQLite/LTX files and logs. Decide whether those artifacts and your own operational tooling provide the evidence your team needs.
- What is the real cost? Compare current service limits and pricing with the full cost of machines, storage, network, operations and application usage. celld’s base-cost comparison excludes application traffic and writes, so it is not a complete workload cost estimate.
Cloudflare’s overview says Durable Objects are available on Free and Paid plans, and that SQLite-backed Durable Objects are available on the Workers Free plan subject to plan limits. The overview, last updated July 15, 2026, also says SQLite storage methods have moved from beta to general availability. Check the current Cloudflare documentation for plan limits and the current feature details before estimating usage.

Why the newsletter calls celld a love letter
The issue uses celld as an approachable way to consider what it means to build on the Durable Objects idea outside Cloudflare’s hosted environment. The project itself calls its work “a love letter to their idea”; that is celld’s characterization, not an independent assessment. The durable-object concept is the shared-state coordination model. The differences that matter to a developer are who runs the infrastructure, which platform capabilities are available, and what reliability and operational responsibilities come with the chosen deployment.
