Bytes issue #40, published March 22, 2021, focused on V8 9.0, Google’s JavaScript and WebAssembly engine—not a drink. It also introduced Clio, a functional language for distributed systems, and included a JavaScript variable-scope quiz. V8 9.0 was then a beta branch ahead of its coordinated release with Chrome 90, so its details are historical rather than current version guidance.
What V8 9.0 introduced
V8’s March 17, 2021 release post described three changes highlighted in Bytes #40: match indices for regular expressions, improved property access through super, and an experimental optimization for JavaScript-to-WebAssembly calls. V8’s release v9.0 notes identify the branch as beta at the time, pending coordination with Chrome 90.
Regular-expression match indices
With the /d flag, a regular-expression match object exposes an indices array. Its entries give the start and end positions of the complete match and of captured groups. This lets code locate matched text by position without calculating offsets from the matched strings. The feature was presented as opt-in through the flag: V8’s v9.0 release notes explain the behavior.

Optimized access through super
V8 reused inline-cache machinery and generated optimized code for super property access. The distinction between execution modes matters: V8’s release notes say interpreted execution still performs additional loads, while optimized code benefits from the change. The announcement therefore describes an engine improvement, not a promise that every use of super becomes faster by the same amount.
JavaScript-to-WebAssembly call inlining
JavaScript calling WebAssembly may need wrapper code to adapt values across the boundary. V8 described inlining that wrapper at the call site as a way to reduce that conversion overhead. In the v9.0 release post, this was experimental and required the --turbo-inline-js-wasm-calls flag; it should not be read as a universally enabled optimization or a guaranteed speedup for every workload. The V8 announcement gives the flag and qualification.

Clio and distributed systems
The issue presented Clio as a functional programming language aimed at distributed systems that compiles to JavaScript, allowing it to use JavaScript’s ecosystem. That is the newsletter’s description when it appeared in March 2021; it does not establish the project’s current maintenance, adoption, or status.
A quiz about JavaScript variable lookup
The quiz declares var name in two functions while also defining an outer name. Its output sequence is undefined, Jordyn, Jake, then Tyler. The key is that var is scoped to its function: a function-local binding does not overwrite the outer binding. When a lookup finds no assigned value in the current execution context, it continues outward through the available environments.
