Bytes issue 252, published January 8, 2024, was a dated tour of performance work across V8 and Chromium—not a single V8 speed upgrade. It covered Maglev and Turboshaft in V8’s JavaScript compiler, a faster HTML parser in Blink, and WebAssembly Garbage Collection (WasmGC) in V8. The distinctions matter: reported improvements describe different things, from benchmark scores to compilation time and energy use.

What Bytes #252 covered

The issue, titled “V8 revs up,” opened with the path JavaScript takes through parsing, compilation, and execution, then highlighted four developments. V8 is Chromium’s JavaScript and WebAssembly engine; Blink is Chromium’s rendering engine. The parser result therefore belongs to Blink, not V8.

  • Maglev: a new mid-tier optimizing compiler in V8’s JavaScript compilation pipeline.
  • Turboshaft: a new internal architecture for V8’s top-tier optimizing compiler.
  • HTML parsing: Blink work associated with a reported Speedometer score increase.
  • WasmGC: support for garbage-collected data structures in WebAssembly, implemented in V8.

These developments were described in sources published in late 2023 and early 2024. They explain what the issue was reporting at that time, rather than establishing the latest state of V8 in 2026.

How Maglev fits into V8’s JavaScript compiler

V8 uses multiple compilation tiers to balance how quickly it can start running code against how much optimization it can apply. Sparkplug is the baseline compiler; TurboFan is the top-tier optimizing compiler. Maglev sits between them. Its purpose is to produce more optimized code than the baseline tier without taking as much compilation work as waiting for TurboFan.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That middle tier matters because code can benefit from optimization before it has run enough—or is worth spending enough compilation time—to reach the top tier. Maglev is a compiler choice within V8, not a separate JavaScript language feature.

What V8 reported for Maglev

In its 2023 year-end account, V8 reported an 8.2% improvement on JetStream and a 6% improvement on Speedometer associated with Maglev. V8 also reported 10% lower overall V8 energy consumption during Speedometer runs, attributing the result to faster compilation and less reliance on TurboFan. These are V8’s published results, not independently reproduced measurements or guaranteed gains for other workloads.

V8’s dedicated Maglev benchmark account specifies Chrome 117.0.5897.3 on a 13-inch M2 MacBook Air as the test setup. The reported percentages should be read in their benchmark context; they do not predict an equivalent change on every device or website.

What Turboshaft changes—and what it does not

Turboshaft is a new internal architecture for V8’s top-tier optimizing compiler. The goal is to make compiler optimizations easier to extend and compilation faster. V8 reported that, since Chrome 120, CPU-agnostic backend phases use Turboshaft in place of TurboFan’s previous backend phases and compile about twice as fast.

That “about twice as fast” result refers to compilation of those compiler phases. It does not mean JavaScript programs execute twice as fast. Faster compiler infrastructure can help V8 build optimized code more quickly, but the reported figure is not a runtime benchmark result.

Why the HTML parser result is a Blink improvement

The newsletter also highlighted work on Chromium’s HTML parser. HTML parsing is part of Blink, the rendering engine, rather than V8’s JavaScript compiler. V8’s year-end account attributed a 3.4% Speedometer score increase to this parser work and noted that WebKit integrated the changes.

That percentage is a reported benchmark result, not evidence that every page, browser, or device became 3.4% faster. Speedometer measures browser performance on a particular benchmark workload; a score change there should not be translated into a universal page-loading or browsing-speed claim.

What WasmGC makes possible

WebAssembly Garbage Collection adds managed object and array types to WebAssembly, allowing programs to use garbage-collected data structures rather than relying only on manually managed memory. V8 shipped WasmGC after years of work. The capability can support languages with garbage-collected runtimes, including Java, Kotlin, Dart, Python, and C#.

In his December 14, 2023 V8 post, author Victor Gomes wrote: “We also shipped a new approach to bringing garbage-collected programming languages efficiently to the Web with WebAssembly Garbage Collection (WasmGC).” V8’s year-end post said relevant applications typically run about twice as fast as when compiled to JavaScript. That is V8’s qualified project claim, not a universal guarantee across languages, applications, or devices.

WasmGC versus compiling a runtime to WebAssembly

V8’s technical explanation distinguishes compiling a language’s constructs to WebAssembly’s GC instructions from compiling an existing language runtime to the original WebAssembly MVP. Those approaches have different performance and code-size tradeoffs. WasmGC is significant because it provides managed types as a WebAssembly capability; it does not mean every existing application can be converted with identical results or without changes.

Work Reported result What the figure describes
Maglev 8.2% on JetStream; 6% on Speedometer V8-reported benchmark improvements in its 2023 year-end account.
Maglev 10% energy savings during Speedometer runs V8’s reported overall energy consumption result, attributed to faster compilation and reduced reliance on TurboFan.
Turboshaft About 2× faster Compilation of CPU-agnostic backend phases since Chrome 120, according to V8—not JavaScript runtime.
Blink HTML parser 3.4% Speedometer score increase V8-reported benchmark result for parser work in Blink.
WasmGC applications Typically about 2× faster than compilation to JavaScript V8’s qualified comparison for relevant garbage-collected language applications.

V8 also reported 14% JetStream and 34% Speedometer overall performance growth for its 2023 work. Those aggregate figures cover many changes, not one feature, so they should not be attributed solely to Maglev, Turboshaft, Blink’s parser, or WasmGC.

What the issue’s headline means

“V8 revs up” captured a collection of related but distinct efforts. Maglev changes how V8 stages JavaScript compilation; Turboshaft changes compiler infrastructure; the HTML parser work improves a neighboring Chromium component; and WasmGC expands what WebAssembly can represent for managed languages. The issue’s benchmark figures are useful evidence of progress, but they are not interchangeable measures of runtime speed or promises about every browser workload.
