Buying a movie on disc is a small way to keep access to a film outside a subscription catalog that can change. It is not a mass move away from streaming: U.S. spending on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD discs still fell in 2025. But the decline slowed, and spending on 4K UHD rose—evidence that physical media remains a choice some viewers value alongside streaming.

Why a disc can feel like a refusal

A subscription gives you access to a catalog, not a permanent place in it. Films can disappear from a service, and finding a particular title may mean juggling subscriptions. A disc offers a different arrangement: buy a particular release, keep the copy, and play it with compatible equipment without relying on that film remaining in a subscription catalog.

That distinction resonates with people who want dependable access. In the Los Angeles Times’ February 23, 2026 report, 31-year-old Lauren VanDerwerken explained: “If something gets deleted off an online platform, I will still be able to watch it because I have a physical copy.” Bianca Garcia, 27, described the frustration of subscription sprawl: “At this point, I’m forced to have six different subscriptions, which is insane, and I still can’t find what I want to watch,”

Those are individual perspectives, not a representative survey of young viewers. They help explain the feeling behind the word “rebellion”: choosing to keep a film rather than depending entirely on a service’s changing selection. The disc itself is not immune to problems—it can be lost or damaged, takes up space, and needs a working player—but its access does not depend on a title staying in a subscription catalog.

What the latest U.S. figures say about discs

The overall market is still shrinking. The Digital Entertainment Group’s year-end 2025 report, released February 11, 2026, says U.S. consumer spending on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD physical formats declined by less than 10% for the year. The Los Angeles Times, citing DEG, put the decline at about 9%, compared with drops of more than 20% in both 2023 and 2024. These figures concern consumer spending in the United States, not worldwide sales or the number of discs shipped.

One format moved in the opposite direction: 4K UHD spending increased 12% in 2025 compared with 2024, according to DEG. That growth is a bright spot within a declining disc market, not evidence that physical formats as a whole are growing. DEG president Amy Jo Smith told the Los Angeles Times, “This is most clear in 4K UHD Blu-ray, which delivers a premium in-home viewing experience.” The available figures do not establish a quantitative picture-quality advantage over streaming.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day - 4K + Blu-ray + Digital
  • It's a BRAND NEW DAY for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn?t remember him?and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him?sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see.

Buying and renting serve different purposes

Buying makes sense when you want to keep a particular film or release. Renting is a way to watch a disc without making it a permanent part of your collection. The Los Angeles Times reported that Los Angeles nonprofit Vidiots averaged 170 rentals per day in its biggest month, January 2026, and rented 500 titles in one day. Those are figures from one shop, not a national measure of disc rental.

Vidiots director Robbie McCluskey called the shop’s activity a “golden age.” That phrase describes his view of the business, not a measured revival across the market. The rental example does show that physical media can mean borrowing or renting as well as buying.

Choose a format and edition that fit your setup

DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD are not interchangeable choices: your player must support the format you select. Beyond compatibility, decide whether the specific release includes the edition or materials you want. Different releases of the same film may have different contents, so check the product details rather than assuming every copy is identical.

Format or access What to check Best fit
DVD Confirm that your player supports DVD and check the specific release details. A film you want on a format your existing equipment can play.
Blu-ray Confirm Blu-ray compatibility; check the edition’s contents. A disc release that suits your player and collection preferences.
4K UHD Blu-ray Confirm that your equipment supports 4K UHD discs; check the edition’s contents. Someone seeking a 4K UHD release with compatible playback equipment.
Disc rental Check rental terms and whether the title is available locally. A one-time or temporary watch without keeping the disc.

Smith’s description of 4K UHD as a premium in-home experience is DEG’s characterization; it does not mean every 4K UHD release or setup will suit every viewer. The practical choice depends on your player, the particular edition, and whether you want lasting access or a temporary watch.
